Publisher's summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Acclaimed author Kevin Hearne makes his hardcover debut with the new novel in his epic urban fantasy series starring the unforgettable Atticus O’Sullivan.

“[Kevin] Hearne is a terrific storyteller with a great snarky wit. . . . Neil Gaiman’s American Gods meets Jim Butcher’s Harry Dresden.”—SFFWorld

For nearly two thousand years, only one Druid has walked the Earth—Atticus O’Sullivan, the Iron Druid, whose sharp wit and sharp sword have kept him alive as he’s been pursued by a pantheon of hostile deities. Now he’s got company.

Atticus’s apprentice Granuaile is at last a full Druid herself. What’s more, Atticus has defrosted an archdruid long ago frozen in time, a father figure (of sorts) who now goes by the modern equivalent of his old Irish name: Owen Kennedy.

And Owen has some catching up to do.

Atticus takes pleasure in the role reversal, as the student is now the teacher. Between busting Atticus’s chops and trying to fathom a cell phone, Owen must also learn English. For Atticus, the jury’s still out on whether the wily old coot will be an asset in the epic battle with Norse god Loki—or merely a pain in the arse.

But Atticus isn’t the only one with daddy issues. Granuaile faces a great challenge: to exorcise a sorcerer’s spirit that is possessing her father in India. Even with the help of the witch Laksha, Granuaile may be facing a crushing defeat.

As the trio of Druids deals with pestilence-spreading demons, bacon-loving yeti, fierce flying foxes, and frenzied Fae, they’re hoping that this time, three’s a charm.

“[Kevin] Hearne is a terrific storyteller with a great snarky wit. . . . Neil Gaiman’s American Gods meets Jim Butcher’s Harry Dresden.”SFFWorld

“[The Iron Druid books] are clever, fast-paced and a good escape.”Boing Boing

“Hearne understands the two main necessities of good fantasy stories: for all the wisecracks and action, he never loses sight of delivering a sense of wonder to his readers, and he understands that magic use always comes with a price. Highly recommended.”The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction

The bear steals the show

I love the new characters introduced in this book, and it is a nice wrap up of a mystery leading into the next book.

Minimal voice change between characters

Like Daniels did not do as good of a job changing voices for Atticus and Granuaile.

One of the Best Iron Druid tales yet.

I’ve been a fan of Luke Daniels reading of the Iron Druid tales since the beginning. I’d been putting off listening to this one because I didn’t love the last tale with the Olympians.
This one, however, was excellent. The introduction of Owen brings another layer of engagement and some seriously laugh outloud moments as well as some genuinely touching ones. It’s a story of heartbreak, redemption, and heartbreak over and over again, with an excellent injection of humor (who doesn’t love Oberon?) and adventure.
As always, Luke Daniels *is* the voice of Atticus O’Sullivan (and of my son’s favorite Minecraft books ;) ), and his performance in this episode is masterful. I’m always impressed at his ability to create different accents convincingly and to code W’s witch between then in a blink. I’m sure there’s a bit of crafty editing involved occasionally, but without the quality voices to work good editing isnt as valuable.
Excellent job team! And thank you to Kevin Hearne for sharing with us another tale of the characters I’ve come to love.

Book 7

Any additional comments?

I enjoyed this book with the different characters reporting their events and reactions. Unfortunately, Atticus continues to get himself into situations thinking that he is taking the best route when in actuality he's making a huge error in judgement. I'm going to predict that his decision to finance a war against vampires is going to come back and bite him in the next book.

If you like this series get it!

Would you consider the audio edition of Shattered to be better than the print version?

Have not read print copy but the narration would be worth listening to if I had read it..

What other book might you compare Shattered to and why?

Very Harry Dresden like. It is a fun easy listen. Also reminds me of some graphic novels I used to read. Literary popcorn!

What about Luke Daniels’s performance did you like?

Just very well done overall.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Pretty much yeah. As a rule these books are a fairly quick read.

Any additional comments?

Series is addictive.

different

this entry in the series is something of a break from the style of the previous books, but it was not an unwelcome change. I enjoyed it immensely and a new character brought great delight.
