Shards, Book 1 | [Peter Prellwitz]

Shards, Book 1

John Wyeth was a successful man. At 19, he graduated at the top of his class at a respected university. By the age of 22, he had survived three brutal years of warfare, serving as commanding officer for a behind-the-lines reconnaissance platoon. Now, at 31, he was the senior project leader for the super secret think tank NATech, and he was very good at what he did.

Everyone knew and no one doubted that within a few years he would be the director. And then he was killed.... Sort of.

When John "woke up", things were different. Instead of his excellent physical condition, he was caught in a Healer's Sleep that robbed him of all voluntary movement and all his senses except hearing. Instead of being a respected leader in an organization for good, he was the dependent refugee of an outlawed resistance, one the world government wanted to destroy. Instead of being in the early 21st century, he was now in the late 27th century. And instead of being a 31 year old man....

    "Excellent Read"

This book reminded me of Enders Game with some new twists. It has a plenty of intensity in one form or another, kept me interested enough to finish it in one sitting, although I was left wanting to know what happens next. One thing I really liked was the Protagonists ability to withstand and overcome, it really drives me nuts when an otherwise strong character acts like an idiot and repeatedly makes self destructive mistakes. The narrator did an awesome job, all the voices were distinct and consistent.

The warbled effects in the beginning were kind of annoying, but they don't last long and the rest of the book more than made of for that with me.

I really hope they release the next 3 books on audio soon.

    "Just ok..."

This book is pretty girly. That can be a good thing, but I doubt that most readers care about that as much as a good story line. The transformation of the character from an uber-capable combat and scientific leader to something else seems to be the main thrust of the story. Lots of tantalizing good science fiction, but poorly developed, wrapped around the teenage girl, weepy, emotional stuff that really detracts from what could be a fantastic book. I would definitely recommend this book for teenage and young female readers, but not for much more.
