Do to all the negative reviews I read - I was almost dreading this book. But how do you not finish a series?? So now I can say having finished it - that I'm definitely glad I did! Was I thrilled with everything "No" - however, I am never 100% happy with all books, especially with so many complicated issues as this series deals with.

I do not want to comment too directly on the story and ruin it for anyone reading this comment, but I do have to agree with many of the reviews that Kiyo is someone I would truly love to throttle if given half a chance,

As for the open ending - not usually a fan, but I KNOW how I want the characters to end - so for me I can accept it.

    Definitely worth listening to....

"Last book in series..Last Mead book I will read..."

I was excited and a bit sad about reading the last book in the Black Swan series. I had fallen in love with Eugenie and Dorian, I wanted it go on forever, but sadly it ended..

The ending is the reason I will no longer read Richelle Mead's books. I have no idea when Eugenie became such a wimp, or when she started letting others take care of her responsibilities. The book has moments where it could have turned into the most amazing one of the series, sadly Ms. Mead didn't deliver.

I know every writer is free to write whatever they would like, Eugenie was a product of Ms. Read's imagination and she is a wonderful writer. I wanted to be happy with her creative direction with the book, but all I could say was, "WHAT THE HELL"!!!

There are some books that you feel OK with the author leaving the ending to your imagination.. sadly this was not one of those books, or the type of series for it.

"A Fitting Conclusion -- Will there be more?"

In this fourth book, there is resolution. There is enough resolution to draw together the three predecessors and tie the story up in a nice neat bow. Unsurprisingly, Mead left enough openings if she desires (or her publisher) to restart the story with another series. Although, I doubt that she would pick up the plot at the same timeframe she left off – she would possibly jump ahead to when the twins are teenagers.

In this book, the final battles to keep safe the first born grandson of Storm King rages. The story moves along briskly but I thought there were a couple of points of dramatics that were left on the table that Mead could have capitalized on. I don’t wish to be a spoiler so I will just say, the struggles were not as epic as they could have been the prophecy end was not as gripping. So for the enthusiast, you’ll say "yeah, well that was great but, it could have been a bit more."

Leaving this minor criticism aside, Mead brought us four books that were entertaining and held together. Her character development was excellent and you wanted to keep listening even after the car was shut off. I recommend the series, but don’t start with book four. No, go back to book one and listen to them all.

    "Horrible"

Such a horrible ending to a great series. Story started off strong, action was okay. Then boom it seems Richelle Mead just gave up and threw something together to end the book. As a fan of her books, I was upset at how she ended this series.

"Where are women who have this much sex? Oh, Porn!"
Would you try another book from Richelle Mead and/or Jennifer Van Dyck?

Not Richelle Mead. I may from Jennifer Van Dyke.

Would you recommend Shadow Heir to your friends? Why or why not?

Not unless they read and liked the previous books by this author.

What aspect of Jennifer Van Dyck???s performance would you have changed?

Nothing. Her inflections are consistent and has good pacing.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

If they edited out the miscellaneous information, maybe.

    Any additional comments?

I have trouble reminding myself that most female authors write solely for a female audience. This book series is one of those. If your a guy, which I am, you will have to suffer through female inadequacy issues and self doubt nonsense. Now, it your into hearing women describe sex in EXPLICIT detail, by all means go ahead and waste your credits. I fast forwarded over these parts and they are more frequent than I like to mention.

On the story front. This book has it's SLOW moments. Wading through chapters of pregnancy is not my idea of good reading but I am a glutton for punishment. I just want to what happens after that. The book is slightly entertaining and had several good twists I just wish there were more action and less "wait and see" moments that take many chapters and pages to solidify.

Overall, if you haven't read and liked the previous installments in this series, don't buy it. If your into fantasy but don't need all this gratuitous porn...check out Ilona Andrews Magic series.

    "Disappointed in the Ending"

I enjoyed this series right up until this book. The beginning is slow and Eugenie was really starting to get on my nerves. (Does this dress make me look fat?) The second half picked up the pace a little. However, the end of a series SHOULD tie up all the loose ends neatly. This did not give a satisfying end. In my opinion the ending of this book suggests the author may be talked into writing more in this series or that she'll pick up a spinoff series from it. For being the main character, Eugenie sure is a whiner. Not sure I'm sorry to see this end. The narrator did a good job with what she had to work with.

    "Closing Out a Good Series"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this book to female urban fantasy readers. I would not recommend it to men as it is very female focused and definitely has a heavy romance element.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I actually really like Jasmine, Eugene's sister. She actually progresses dramatically throughout the series, but keeps her fiery personality.

Have you listened to any of Jennifer Van Dyck’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, I actually started this series because I enjoy Jennifer's reading so much. Jennifer was great, as always.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Not really, although I got through the whole series quickly, it was one that I could put down when needed.

    Any additional comments?

Although this books was a little too romance (read sex) focused for my preference, it was a good series overall with an interesting universe perspective. There were a few twists in this last book that really worked and a few (Kiyo's reveal at the end) that I just didn't really buy into. Overall, I was disappointed with Eugene's final decisions as I feel it betrayed her character's moral compass that was built throughout the series. Then again, motherhood does change everything.

    "Very Disappointing Ending!"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

In the beginning it was. The ending ruined the whole series. Who leaves a story unfinished like that?

If you’ve listened to books by Richelle Mead before, how does this one compare?

I have loved this series and cannot stop being so dissapointed that this story has ended so poorly. Her Succubus series is pretty good so far.

What does Jennifer Van Dyck bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Nothing specific. I did enjoy her though.

Did Shadow Heir inspire you to do anything?

    no.

    Any additional comments?

I really hope that she decides to do one more book and fills in the blanks.
