Publisher's Summary

In 2002, Catherine Asaro won the Nebula Award for The Quantum Rose, the sixth novel in her Saga of the Skolian Empire. This very same novel was also named Best SF Novel by the Romantic Times. Schism: Part One of Triad is the 10th novel in this multiple award-winning series, and represents an excellent entry point into the series.

Schism harkens back to the early years of the Skolian Empire, back to the beginning of the war between Skolia and the Euban Traders. Twenty-three years have passed since the fateful vote in the Skolian Assembly that Roca missed in Skyfall. It created the first open hostility between Eube and Skolia, which has only deepened over the ensuing years. Now, Eube senses an opportunity, for strife has riven the first family of the Skolian Empire. Sauscony, the daughter of Roca and Eldrinson, is ready to seek her fortune as an officer-in-training in the Skolian military. When her father forbids her to undertake such a dangerous path, a wedge is formed as Soz chooses duty over family. Eube hopes to make this permanent, a divide that will leave the Skolian Empire ripe for conquest. And they're willing to kill anyone to make it happen.Revel in the latest adventure of this Nebula Award-winning series.

"Poor Narrator Distracts from Good Book"

I enjoy Catherine Asaro's Skolian Empire series, but the plethora of narrators distracts from the series. And this narrator is particularly dreadful. While trying to listen, the narrator distracts me and I keep thinking, "the reader's inflection does not match this scene" or "is this narrator really a computer?" and frequently, "it's pronounced scion, not p-scion, honestly, it's a play on words, the P is silent in the word psychic, so why would it be pronounced in psion?!" I'm not sure I'll finish this book, we'll see if I can overcome the challenges presented by this narrator.

"A good story in the series, but ..."

I don't know how the producers could have someone who can't pronounce neutrino narrate this story. The inconsistency between narrators of books in the series is annoying, but mispronouncing scientific words in books that are so heavily embroidered with science is maddening.

    "Well, I didn't stop listening..."
What did you like best about Schism? What did you like least?

Schism is intended as light reading, and it is mildly entertaining. I didn't love the characters or their world. The social differences that are supposed to motivate the society were not credible to me. I listened to the entire book (which I do not always do when I dislike the story), but I won't follow the series.

Did Suzanne Weintraub and Catherine Asaro do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

The narration was smooth, but the reading is full of mispronunciations of middle-school level words. Isn't there a director or editor who polices these mistakes? About halfway through, I began to jot down the words irritatingly mispronounced by the narrator -- they include bohemoth, affluent, tumult, chasm, implacable, simulacrum, molecular and neutrino. Other listeners might not notice, but these errors distract me and detract from my enjoyment of the story.

    "The Narrator ruins the listen..."
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

    A better narrator

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Suzanne Weintraub and Catherine Asaro ?

Anyone other than Weintraub. Someone who can pronounce words like Behemoth and Psychiatric.....

You didn???t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

The story was in keeping with the rest of the Skollian novels.

    "Good intro to Skolian empire"

Well written but I was annoyed by the narrator pronouncing the silent P in Psion, It should be the the same pronunciation as Psychology, or any other Ps words.

    "Horrible Narrator."
What didn’t you like about Suzanne Weintraub and Catherine Asaro ’s performance?

I have to agree that Suzanne Weintraub may be the worst narrator, ever. She can't pronounce Behemoth! I guess she is a reader of medical texts but the mind boggles at what she does with medical language. I only have to suffer through one more book Ms Weintraub narrates, and for that I am thankful.

    "Pre teen girl stuff"

I really need to start listening to the sample or free first chapter before buying. A quick listen and I would have known that this was not my style. I listen to one cd and called it quits, all though I knew within the first 10 minutes that I was not going to care. The first chapter list about 100 characters and all there relations. This is followed by a teenage girl who is the smartest person in the world, but she doesn't know it, she is so modest. Even though she is so smart, she does not know it until it is spelled out to her. There is also the dramatic guy kisses girl and then never calls her back. She feels her parents do not support her as much as her brother, because he is a boy and she is girl. I did not read far enough to see if she was as blind to her parents feelings and she was to her abilities. We also get the put down of people who are happy at being farmers and living in one place. Farmers of course are not as good as people who seek adventure. All this I got in 80 minutes of listening and I could not see going another 800 to 880 minutes. Me learn my lesson, listen to the samples.
