Publisher's summary

As the last Healer in the Fifteen Realms, Avry of Kazan is in a unique position: in the minds of friends and foes alike, she no longer exists. Despite her need to prevent the megalomaniacal King Tohon from winning control of the Realms, Avry is also determined to find her sister and repair their estrangement. And she must do it alone, as Kerrick, her partner and sole confidant, returns to Alga to summon his country into battle.

Though she should be in hiding, Avry will do whatever she can to support Tohon's opponents. That includes infiltrating a holy army, evading magic sniffers, teaching forest skills to soldiers, and figuring out how to stop Tohon's most horrible creations yet: an army of the walking dead - human and animal alike and nearly impossible to defeat.

War is coming and Avry is alone. Unless she figures out how to do the impossible…again.

Can't Wait for the Next One!

Another solid book in a very entertaining series. This book picked up right where the last book left off and just like the first, I found it hard to put it down. Avry had a few dumb moments in this book that made her character a little uneven. She would seem so strong and capable and smart in some ways and then incredibly naive and slow to pick up on clues that seemed super obvious. But overall, it was a good book. And I'm looking forward to reading the third book when it comes out. Sucks to have to wait until the Fall!!!

NO REST for Avry & Kerrick

There is absolutely no let down. SNYDER doesn’t pull her punches. The war is on and Avry and Kerrick are going to do their damnest to try to make sure the right side wins. They even put the Fifteen Realms above their own hearts.

No sooner does SNYDER have us basking in the glow of requited and consummated love, it feels like she is ripping off an appendage. Avry and Kerrick separate in order to give Ryne the best possible chance at victory over the evil-doers, Tohon and friends. There is no rest. You are in perpetual movement whether it is action, plotting, eluding and escaping capture. I was weary and tired like our characters by the end. I desperately wanted a good night sleep with no threat of enemy for them all. I also wanted to know where the hell was Belen. Where is he? I need to know Papa-Bear is all right.

And just like Jen @ Starry-Eyed Revue said, if you don’t like cliffhangers make sure you have TASTE OF DEATH on hand. SNYDER is proving to be quite devious in her episodic endings.

GABRA ZACKMAN is a new narrator for me. She plays Avry a little older than I imagined, but with a maturity and levelness that fits her character. And once I settled in the narration, I was right back there between the pages just as if I was reading it. It didn’t lack or detract from the story and even added dimensionality at moments. I was able to feel all the emotions and especially Avry’s worry and wanting for the men in her life. GABRA is also one of those narrators that is able to do strong, feeling men without emasculating them. Her Tohon had a darkness and mystery that perfectly haunted Avry.

I was so bored!

I couldn't even finish the book! I got half-way through the book and still nothing exciting was going on, so I called it quits. I loved the poison study series ( except Fire Study) and I liked touch of power, but since the exact same narrator was used with the exact same character voices ( Yolanda & Avry) I found myself mixing up the past story lines of the two different series. I only have a handful of books that I haven't finished due to boredom or poor narration and this was one of them.

Disappointing

I enjoyed her earlier books; however the last 3 she put out seem to be written for a much younger audience. The story is silly and the characters are supposed to be adults, yet they act, think and behave like young teens at times. They make ridiculous decisions then spend a good deal of the story justifying the decisions or overcome the consequence of those decisions.
I don’t remember her other books doing this. But again maybe my taste in books has changed.

Scent of Magic

This is the second book of a trilogy. The story picks up pace in this book as you are kept guessing as to who is good or evil. The conflict of who will rule the land from the fist book, becomes even more tangled with addition of more contenders. The main character continues her struggle to preserve life and goodness during a time when people find it easier to stray to unsavory ways. The plot is exciting and unpredictable. Hard to put this one down.

A tad bit drawn out...

I loved the first book in this series and looked forward to this one. Although good, it was not as good as the first. The story line dragged on without the 'I can't wait to hear more'.
I found myself thinking 'get on with it, will ya, already!'
I liked the narration quite well, and will probably take a chance when the next book comes out in this series...i hope there is a next one...lol

Great 2nd book

This book was an excellent continuation of the storyline but was also able to stand alone on its own merits. Again, the narration was exceptional. The depth of emotion conveyed made the story more compelling in this format than in print.
