Editorial reviews

Elisabeth Rodgers gives an enthralling performance of Shades of Gray, the third book in C. Dulaney’s apocalyptic Roads Less Traveled series. She has a melodious voice and an astounding gift for inhabiting disparate characters. Protagonist Kacey and her band of survivors are now working for the National Guard. Soon, some of their friends begin disappearing, and reappear in undead form. They set off on a dangerous journey to West Virginia Command Center to find answers. Can they handle the truth?

Publisher's summary

"The world was no longer black and white. Now they lived in shades of gray."

Kasey and the gang have come full circle through the crumbling world. Working for the National Guard, they realize old friends and fellow survivors are disappearing. When the missing start to reappear as walking corpses, the group sets out on another journey to discover the truth. Their answers wait in the West Virginia Command Center.

Along the way, Kasey’s group encounters a new breed of horror; humanity twisted into something not quite alive, but not quite dead. When the secret of the Command Center is unearthed, an old enemy threatens to rip Kasey’s world inside out.

Everything they know is wrong. A mistake they will pay for with blood.

great conclusion to the series!

Any additional comments?

after listening to the 2nd book, i was totally psyched that the 3rd book was coming out like a week after i finished it. so after coding and debugging c# code all day, i was eagerly waiting to start listening to the final book in this series. while i thought the 1st book was ok, i loved the 2nd book. this 3rd book is like the 2nd book. i really enjoyed it and am now kind of sad that the series is over. it's like i'm coming down off of a high. lol those hazy days of high school and college. lol ok... i digress

the story picks up after kc's group has met the west va national guard or what's left of it. for reminders, kc's group consists of her original group: jake, nancy (jakee's grandma, mila (kc's best friend), and the survivors from the prison: michael (their leader), jonas, john, and abbey. they all are holed up at the winchester country club.

in exchange for supplies, kc and the others help the national guard find and rescue other survivors. waters, the national guard commander, takes the survivors kc and her group find and houses them at the prison.

waters tells kc's group that he's been given orders by the cc (command center) that ALL survivors are to be saved no matter what. this riles kc and her group b/c some survivors are surviving by doing some pretty horrendous things. so as the story begins kc and her group of survivors have the worst record for bringing in new survivors b/c they end up killing some.

after a group of runners (fast zombies) attack, kc and the group are shocked when they recognize some of them. everbody gets even more suspicious of waters and the people giving the orders at the cc. so after another devestating attack on their compound by a hoard of zombies, kc and everyone else are at their wit's end, and they decide to travel to the cc to see what the heck is going on there.

what i appreciate about this author is that nothing is ever easy nor without consequences. on their way to the cc, kc and her group encounter another type of zombie. this adds a new twist to the story, which is definitely unique, like nothing i've read or listened to before. it propels the story forward. the characters want answers, and you want answers.

ok...i haven't said more than the teaser. lol i almost did, but i deleted it. sorry!

my initial impression was DANG! when i noticed how short the book was- 9 and 1/2 hours. to me, that's kind of short, and i was hoping for more b/c i've come to really enjoy this series.

this book is action packed and sadly over before you know it. the interpersonal tension is well done, and there's even intrapersonal tension in kc's head. both are believable and add to the story. i really love a good zombie hoard! lol the author did it really well in book 2 and this book. you really get the feeling of how the heck are they gonna get out of this!

the story/series has a satisfying and unexpectedly touching conclusion. definitely time and credits/money well spent!

if you're a zombie fan, then this series is definitely a must listen to!

I hope it's not the end.

Any additional comments?

One of the best series I have every listened to. I was so invested in the characters that I felt a sense of loss when it was over. The author left a little room at the end for another in the series; however, it was wrapped up nicely enough that it could be the end. I find myself laying in bed at night thinking about what could possible be next for each person in the story. To me, that equals an excellent book!!

Good all the way to the end

This is one of the few series I restarted from book 1 when I purchased book 3; I wanted the story to be fresh in my mind, and It was well worth the time.

I've listen to almost every Zombie book out there, Dulaney isn't pushing some worn out, re-hashed story; this book was full of surprises, when you think the story was ending, Dulaney has more for you. If there's a 4th book, I'll buy it.

Great conclusion but previous books better

This "last" book in the series is much "bigger" than the other books, more people, more complex, more twists, more ammo and more everything but I think some things were lost. Things just happen to push the plot, especially at the end, problems are solved suddenly. Emotionally I have less attachment with Kasey.

From the start shes kinda stoney and shes tormented by things from previous books but there are no flashbacks so I barely remember what happened.

This story addresses one of Dulaneys criticism in that she doesn't introduce anything new into the genre. Well, she does here and its a ways better "twist" for a new zombie than any other book I've read or listened to.

A very good listen and conclusion to the series.

I didn't like the heavy handed ending here.

This series has been good but not great all along, and I think the ending felt forced. In particular I don't like last minute reveals that suddenly provide new background where none was hinted at earlier in the series. It feels very much like deux ex machina and I'm not a big fan that. I also don't think it was needed in this case.

I don't want to give any more detail on that in a review.

Overall it wasn't bad - about like the rest of the series.
