Publisher's summary

In the wake of the dragon's attack, Kyra is sent on an urgent quest: to cross Escalon and seek out her uncle in the mysterious Tower of Ur. The time has come for her to learn about who she is and who her mother is and to train and develop her special powers. It will be a quest fraught with peril for a girl alone - Escalon is filled with dangers from savage beasts and men alike - one that will require all of her strength to survive.

Her father, Duncan, must lead his men south, to the great water city of Esephus, to attempt to free his fellow countrymen from the iron grip of Pandesia. If he succeeds, he will have to journey to the treacherous Lake of Ire and then on to the icy peaks of Kos, where live the toughest warriors of Escalon, men he will need to recruit if he has any chance of taking the capital.

Alec escapes with Marco from The Flames to find himself on the run through the Wood of Thorns, chased by exotic beasts. It is a harrowing journey through the night as he quests for his hometown, hoping to be reunited with his family. When he arrives, he is shocked by what he discovers.

Merk, despite his better judgment, turns back to help the girl and finds himself, for the first time in his life, entangled in a stranger's affairs. He will not forego his pilgrimage to the Tower of Ur, though, and he finds himself anguished as he realizes the tower is not what he expects.

Vesuvius spurs his giant as he leads the Trolls on their mission underground, attempting to bypass The Flames while the dragon, Theos, has his own special mission on Escalon.

With its strong atmosphere and complex characters, Rise of the Valiant is a sweeping saga of knights and warriors, kings and lords, honor and valor, magic, destiny, monsters, and dragons. It is a story of love and broken hearts, deception, ambition, and betrayal. It is fantasy at its finest, inviting us into a world that will live with us forever, one that will appeal to all ages and genders.

Uncreative

Some things just got very repetitive in this book. The author reuses phrases and words such as "end over end" and "crestfallen" repeatedly through EVERY book. Those are only 2 examples, but there are PLENTY more. Honestly, it makes the reader feel like there was very little effort put into writing the sequels. Did the author run out of vocabulary and imagination?

Good performance parts of story decent.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Yes, although I like several parts of this book, the setting, one or two characters, and the way it's written. After a while most of the characters get old and really cheesy and annoying. In the first book I halfway cared whether the protagonist (Kyra) lived or died now I wish she would just die she got extremely annoying. The author is constantly repeating things. Like for example everyone thinking there gonna die, then something absurd happens and they live. If you want solid characters like for instance Duncan the really tough leader whose been the hundreds of battles. He should not be thinking "Hey there's bad guys now I'm gonna die" every time he see's them and does not stand much of a chance. What a war hardened person In my opinion he would be looking for ways to gain advantages now giving into despair and every chapter it gets really old really fast.

What do you think your next listen will be?

I will probably listen to the next book in this series (Weight of Honor) Although they are getting old its just not like me to put a series down without finishing it. If I don't its going to bug me the rest of my life.

Which character – as performed by Wayne Farrell – was your favorite?

Merk or possibly Duncan's friend that is a sailor forget his name now.

Do you think Rise of the Valiant needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Although it already has one. No the first book was ok and since it was just starting out It didn't get me near as annoyed as this book if something does not change in the writing and fast the rest of this series is gonna be nearly unbearable. I hope this series ends fast.

Any additional comments?

What would make this a good book is if the characters would be less cheesy. There would be less obvious things happen its really predictable and although some people don't like this its nice to at least kill off a couple of the bigger characters just because it makes you think that the main ones that you like might die. Not to mention it is easier to keep up with.

Impatient

I hate series books because you always have to wait for the next book! I also hope the series isn't like 5 or 6 or 7 books down the line before we finally get an ending! I have given up on these series before because of the time waiting and waiting and waiting!

Great potential, subpar execution

I really like the characters in this story, except for Aiden, but the events are poorly executed. It becomes obvious the author is throwing things in to extend the adventure without fully thinking them through. I am also very opposed to using a cliffhanger as the ending of a book.

The narrator does a very good job. His accent fits in perfectly with the middle ages setting.

Ok for preteens

The first book much better then the second. Overall I found it to be juvenile and redundant. Plot needed better character development and substance other then way overdone life harrowing action. Quality over quantity, slow down and stop churning them out. For God's sake enroll in some writing classes.

I Loooooove Wayne Ferrell.. His different Voice Pitch Per Character. I can listen to him All Day.. He makes you 1 with each Character.. So in-depth that you seem to be part of the story.
