Critic reviews

  • Locus Award, 1989

"Suddenly the saga of Alvin Maker begins to thrill." (Washington Post Book World)
"Set in an alternate world steeped in natural magic, this sequel to Seventh Son continues to demonstrate the author's love for American folklore. Recommended." (Library Journal)
"Harsher, bleaker, and more mystical than Seventh Son, this novel superbly demonstrates Card's solid historical research, keen understanding of religious experience, and, most of all, his mastery of the art of storytelling." (Booklist)
"Red Prophet is but a section of a vast American fantasy epic. It is vividly written, and the principal actors (Alvin, Ta-Kumsaw the Prophet, and Alvin's Gandalfesque mentor Taleswapper) are all complete and memorable characters." (Philadelphia Inquirer)

Interesting premise

It is such a unique take on how the initial relationship between whites and Native Americans deteriorated. I enjoyed it very much, the area tees are quite riveting. I wish the smuggler had lived longer, great character

The prophet novels are more than entertainment...

I am listening, and learning the whole while. Orson Card has lifted how I think when I write. I thank you Sir, and I thank the memory of Ben Bova...

A story of a familiar terrible history, but one that ends with a ray of hope. Well done Orson, very well done.

I hope people won’t listen to the comments about how racist this book is, it’s not. It’s a work of historical fantasy. A homage to the original people of America who suffered and died here. You might not like how Orson portrays white people or native Americans but this was a story worth telling and a story worth listening to. Even though it is fiction, your heart will tremble for the natives because this story is not far from truth.

Not crazy about the plot.

This book caught me off guard. As I'm listening to the 1st chapter I'm thinking "is OSC racist?" By the end of chapter 2 however, I decided that maybe he's not racist. In the end, the conflict in the story Just didn't sit well with me.
