Publisher's summary

When Lister got drunk, he really got drunk!

After celebrating his birthday with a Monopoly-board pub crawl around London, he came to in a burger bar on one of Saturns moons, wearing a lady's pink crimplene hat and a pair of yellow fishing waders, with no money and a passport in the name of "Emily Berkenstein".

Joining the Space Corps seemed a good idea. Red Dwarf, a clapped out spaceship, was bound for Earth. It never made it, leaving Lister as the last remaining member of the human race, three million light years from Earth, with only a dead man, a senile computer, and a highly evolved cat for company.

They begin their journey home. On the way, they'll break the light barrier. They'll meet Einstein, Archimedes, God, and Norman Wisdom...and discover an alternative plane of reality.

Smegging Brillo

An alternate, expanded take on Red Dwarf’s first two seasons, it takes elements from different episodes and weaves them together in a familiar, yet new rendition. Add on the fact that Arnold Judas Rimmer himself is not only reading it, but doing his fantastic impressions of his cast mates for their dialogue, and you’ve got a win/win scenario. Highly recommended.

Epically funny

I watched the tv series years ago, read the books. This audio version narrated by Chris Barrie is fantastic. For any red dwarf fan thinking about it it’s a must. Even my kids enjoyed it on car journeys

So funny. Loved it.

The narrator is simply AMAZING! Changing dialects, voices, tones. And the sounds he produces... My God... just to hear him snore...
The book is good, but the narration is superb.

great production! glad they included the theme song from the show, and Chris Barrie does a great impression of the rest of the cast.

Cut off in the middle of the story

If you could sum up Red Dwarf in three words, what would they be?

good but cut-off

What does Chris Barrie bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He was very good

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The ending... I guess it is a cliff hanger ending..

Any additional comments?

The book ended in the middle of the story.. It is a very good story so if you want to listen to it you will need to buy the second book Better than life.

What you'd expect

Barrie does a fine job of getting the nuances of all the characters. It's not exactly the same as an episode of the TV show, but it's a good reading of the book. If you've read the book, you'll know what to expect. If you haven't, it's not exactly the same as the TV show, but all in all it's an enjoyable 8 hours.

Marvelous voice acting

It isn't surprising that Chris Barrie does Rimmer's voice perfectly, because he played Rimmer on the show. But also, his imitation of Craig Charles' Lister is uncannily perfect, and his Holly and Cat are pretty good. If you like the show, this is a must-hear.

Like a long bonus episode of the great series!

Hat's off to Chris Barrie -- in addition to all his other talents, an excellent mimic. His impressions of the other actors are so good that I quickly stopped noticing and just settled in to enjoy the ride.

If you love the BBC series, you'll find that this is more of the same excellent writing by Grant and Naylor, along with top notch voices and narration by Chris Barrie (aka Arnold Rimmer).

Red Dwarf

Have loved the story since I saw it on PBS station years ago. Bought the book many years ago. When I got my Kindle I got it again. Then I found it in audio books. Have listened to 3 times and still laugh at parts of it. Really didn't want Lister to .......die.
