What the Critics Say

"The second book in Holland's The Gods Dream Trilogy lives up to the excellent first volume in the trilogy. A captured prince tortured by an evil god finds his soul mate in an Earth woman badly wounded in body and spirit." (Jacqueline Diamond)

"Debra Holland has created...a world complete with complex cultures; language; petty, warring Gods; and characters that are compelling and sometimes endearing or frightening." (N. Peterson)

    "A Must Read Sequel"

I enjoyed Reaper of Dreams as much if not more than the first book, Sower of Dreams. Reaper continues the story of the world of Princess Daria, expanding into additional lands, people and cultures, while solving some of the mysteries left open from the first book, so you won't want to miss it. With the expanded character sets, comes more interactions, clever twists with intense and suspenseful action. The characters advance at a good pace and their skills, compassion and strengths are put to full use. Its also about moving forward from a past filled with hardship.

The audible version especially brings this all to life with a great narrator. I can take my long walks and do chores while immersed in a mystical land and intriguing story.

    "Complicated, outstanding listen"
    Any additional comments?

This is the series of The Gods Dream Trilogy which was just as outstanding as the first book in this series. This is a complicated read with many twists and turns as Ms. Holland takes you to another world where everything is different. She gives you a well told story with many wonderful characters where god's have over thrown each other taking control of human minds to get energy. The bad god feels he should have all the people worshiping him as he has helped the good gods people more. This is a story of taking back you life when it was in a happier time. People helping people to a common goal and bring back a kingdom.

The author almost brings tears to your eyes as she brings back together a sister and her brother she thought was dead. That was the most touching part of the whole read. This is a story of overcoming your past growing as a person and finding love for so many. Putting a kingdom right and bring the god's back to protect their people.

Noah Michael Levine bring life to this story with his great voice and his even tones. He has a smooth voice that pulls you in. It paints the picture of a place with such color that it almost feels real. You have no trouble knowing if the character is male or female, his emotions fit what the characters are going through. There are no background noise and you can't tell if he takes any breaks. This is just one lovely narration that gives you a wonderful compelling listen.

Ms. Holland always brings a wonderful tale and plot to her story. She has a way of pulling you in and letting the book take you over. This is really a very touching and heartwarming read as the characters take control and start over finding love and building a new life. I love this author's books she is a must have author. If you have read or listen to any of her books she puts family values back into us as she takes us to another place and time. I love this fantasy series where everything is different than earth. The little pet animals will charm you as the characters bring a smile to your face as they touch you with their pain. If you haven't read or listen to any of this author's work you really should. Each book for me is a must have with her wonderful story telling ways that stay with you after you have finished the read.

    "Such an epic adventure!"

This story was just as wonderful as the first. Adventure, love, loss, death, faith, fighting for what's right, reunions this book has everything and more! If you're tired of the same old story and have a thirst for an epic journey this series is for you! It reminds of when I fell in love with The Never Ending Story when I was young! That feeling of saving the world and the amazing road you take to get there!

    "Reaper of Dreams"
What did you love best about Reaper of Dreams?

I love the way the story continued to put me into this world. I loved the way the characters continued to develops as I got to know them. This second in the series focused on Jasmine with flashes over to Daria and Khan, to keep me up to speed on what was happening with them and it was handled so smoothly that the story continued to flow.

What other book might you compare Reaper of Dreams to and why?

Reaper does not really compare to any other story, other than Sower of Dreams as they, thus far, are the only two stories that exist in these worlds.

What does Noah Michael Levine bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I think that Noah M. Levine did an even better job this time; I felt more excitement in his voice which lent more excitement to the story. It was as if he also were becoming involved and a part of the story this time as opposed to just telling me about what was happening.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Enderon and Daria identified each other, when their Lifelines reconnected.

    Any additional comments?

I have enjoyed books one and two of this series and can not wait to read book three. Thank you, Debra Holland for two great reads. You truly ROCK!!

Would you consider the audio edition of Reaper of Dreams to be better than the print version?

There is nothing better than being read to by a voice as smooth as velvet!

What does Noah Michael Levine bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Noah's Chocolately smooth voice mesmerizes the listener, enhancing the story

Debra continues to entrance and enthrall the reader with her outstanding weaving of a story.

    "Well done! (again)"
Where does Reaper of Dreams rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This series is so great. I'm so glad I found this author.

What other book might you compare Reaper of Dreams to and why?

Like the Sword of Truth series, Holland's worlds and characters seem so real. They are not over-written, yet they have depth, are creative, and (best of all) are memorable.

What about Noah Michael Levine’s performance did you like?

I can't believe a man can do all the voices so well. I hear a little girl speaking and I hear an old man speaking but it is all through Noah Michael Levine. He can do gruff and rough equally well with refined ladies or scared little girls. How does he do that? How does he get the emotions of a young woman (SPOILER ALERT) who has gone through rape just right? How does he know how to perform a scared, little girl (say 7 or 8 years old)?

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I usually have a hard time picturing the steps and movements of individual characters during fight scenes. With this book, I could see the fight scenes really clearly. So, this time, I enjoyed each of the battle scenes. At the end (I'm trying not to give anything away), I loved how one of the main characters (the king) deals with a fallen comrade.

    Any additional comments?

The way Debra Holland handles such delicate themes really moves me. She writes authentically about subjects that society may find hard to read about (such as rape). She writes in a manner that does not over pull at the emotional heart strings. I feel she writes in a way that does not seek to lead the reader to have a particular response. Rather, she writes simply and beautifully about these subjects and allows me, the reader, to have my own authentic emotional experience.

    "AN ENCHANTING AND EXOTIC SCI-FI!"
What did you love best about Reaper of Dreams?

REAPER OF DREAMS, indeed this whole series, is much more than a romance. It's a captivating tale of complex cultures, good versus evil warring gods, and incredibly breathtaking worlds. It's a bold good versus evil mythological tale of heroism, as timeless as the sand in an hourglass and an illustration of the impending consequences of the ever-present.

What other book might you compare Reaper of Dreams to and why?

Any of the classics that involve epic journeys. Lord of the Rings comes to mind... though it didn't include a romance as Reaper does. It is very similar to the first book in this series, SOWER OF DREAMS, which I also greatly enjoyed and highly recommend.

What about Noah Michael Levine’s performance did you like?

I am very happy that Noah Michael Levine returned as the narrator. I had begun listening to audio books in March of this year and the first book in this trilogy was actually my first audio with a male narrator. At first, it was disconcerting, but, after a few chapters in that book, I developed a true appreciation of his voice. As was true for SOWER OF DREAMS, Noah doesn't read the story, he performs it. His voice was very clear and he raised and lowered his tone and inserted pauses and needed emotions at the appropriate times. He continued to do a great job capturing the essence of the characters and differentiating between them. I could feel the tension, fear, relief, and longings in his voice. I'm very glad that he will continue narrating this trilogy; he is working on the third book, HARVEST OF DREAMS, now. I would definitely pick up other books that he has narrated in the future.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The story kept me biting my nails with baited breath for what was coming next! It was a rush to have favorite characters from the first book, Khan Laenser, and Princess Daria of Seagem, figure prominently in this tale. One of my favorite scenes was the re-uniting of brother and sister in the evil god's temple culminating a long journey that began in the first book. I almost cried when they finally embraced. Supporting characters are well-drawn. I especially look forward to reading more of the Chetowah Indians.

DEBRA HOLLAND'S WONDERUL GODS' DREAM TRILOGY CONTINUES...

***This review is for the audible version of REAPER OF DREAMS***

REAPER OF DREAMS by Debra Holland is a fascinating addition to her Gods' Dream Trilogy. A magically original romantic sci-fi, it picks up where the first book in the series, SOWER OF DREAMS, left off. However, the author fills in background information via flashbacks so the second book could be enjoyed as a standalone if that's your preference. Even though I had listened to the preceding book, I actually picked up additional tidbits in the flashbacks so the flashes-from-the-past weren't boring in the least. I highly recommend reading SOWER OF DREAMS first just because it's a fantastic story on its own, but even though there are interconnected characters, it's truly not absolutely necessary to read the series in order to thoroughly enjoy REAPER OF DREAMS.

REAPER OF DREAMS is the story of Crown Prince Indaran and Jasmine Karzai. We are introduced to both thusly:
"Indaran, crown prince of Seagem, lay immobilized on a vast alter-like slab in the center of Ontarem's temple, the Evil God's mental tentacles enmeshed with his mind. Ontarem fed on Indaran's memories, greedily gnawing off chunks of emotion. Then He cracked them apart like a bone, sucking out the marrow of the prince's life essence."
    ---
"Jasmine Karzai emerged from the dark tunnel leading away from her shattered life, walking into the gray land of her vision. In front of her, stubby trees with thick trunks the color of new cement laced tangled branches overhead, dangling leaves like pewter coins that tinkled as they fluttered in the breeze."
    ---
They were star crossed lovers from different worlds, mesmerizing characters that pulled at my heartstrings. Each had experienced terrible traumas and suffered horribly. Yet they were each charismatic and so inspirational. Induran was phenomenal; His exploration dream was shattered when he was captured by Ontarem, but he never gave up, holding on to his fighting spirit for an unbelievably long time all while being dreadfully tortured. Both Indaran and Jasmine were strong of character and in "other sense" powers and their compassion for others motivated them to rise above their ordeals. Would fate allow them a future together? Would there even be a future for any of them?

Bottomline: With a solidly crafted plot, well-defined, genuine characters and crisp storytelling, this series continues to excite and excel. REAPER OF DREAMS is a very enjoyable combination of sci-fi and romance. As in the previous book, there's a very satisfying ending combined with a cliffhanger that leads into the next book. I look forward to listening to the final epic installment, HARVEST OF DREAMS, which will decide the fate of all!
