A world at stake. A quest for the ultimate prize. Are you ready?

In the year 2045, reality is an ugly place. The only time Wade Watts really feels alive is when he’s jacked into the OASIS, a vast virtual world where most of humanity spends their days.

When the eccentric creator of the OASIS dies, he leaves behind a series of fiendish puzzles, based on his obsession with the pop culture of decades past. Whoever is first to solve them will inherit his vast fortune—and control of the OASIS itself.

Then Wade cracks the first clue. Suddenly he’s beset by rivals who’ll kill to take this prize. The race is on—and the only way to survive is to win.

Critic reviews

2017, Laura Hillenbrand Outstanding Literary Award, Winner

“The science-fiction writer John Scalzi has aptly referred to Ready Player One as a ‘nerdgasm’ [and] there can be no better one-word description of this ardent fantasy artifact about fantasy culture. . . . But Mr. Cline is able to incorporate his favorite toys and games into a perfectly accessible narrative.” (Janet Maslin, The New York Times)

“This non-gamer loved every page of Ready Player One.” (Charlaine Harris, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Sookie Stackhouse series)

Before Ready Player One became a box office hit, it was a beloved gem by author Ernest Cline. It won countless fans for its strong and engaging storyline, relatable characters, and heart-pounding action. Part of what makes the story so memorable is that it’s more than it appears at surface level. Not just a sci-fi/fantasy romp, it has real-world lessons about the dangers posed by invasive tech, the impact of poverty, and the human desire for belonging.

flash back

well having been a kid and growing up during this time, it was like a flashback to my childhood.
I listened to this on the advice of my bookworm daughter, she said, dad you'll know everything they are talking about! Lol...... she was mostly correct.
I thoroughly enjoyed Will Wheaton's reading
This may be the first book I go back to to listen a second time.

Great Audible Book!

My kids are 80's kids and as a present dad, I lived and loved everything those kids did. Much of the life and pop culture of the 80's is well known to me and I loved the details of the story and all the minutuae therein. Our first family computer was a Randy a 20 MB hdd and 512 KB ram. We played Nintendo and Sega games as well as classic PC games like Loom and Rampage together. If you're the slightest but nostalgic for those halcyon days, you will enjoy Wil Wheaton's excellent narration of a very entertaining story.

I want to live in the Oasis

This is my first audiobook and what a great way to start. I first saw the movie of Ready Player One and absolutely loved it. This audiobook takes you on such a nostalgic adventure that I felt Ernie Cline was in my head because a lot of the references he made, I had in the 80’s. The story is different from the movie but that’s ok because it still keeps you engaged with the descriptions and references only made better by the narration of fellow geek, Will Wheaton. Ernie Cline did a great job with the writing and it made me wish the Oasis was real. His characters are so relatable and I think anyone can take something from this book. If you are a geek, or love the 80’s or just want to be transported to another place-then download this audio.

Even my non-reader teen loved it!

Loved this book! Great audiobook. Fooled my teen into listening to it on spring break while driving around UT :) even HE thought it was great!

We watched the movie after we finished the audiobook, the film is totally different than the book. Both very good, just different. We enjoyed comparing and contrasting. And, yay, even my non-reader teen son said the book is better than the movie.

Will Wheaton FTW!

After listening to this book I can not only say that I love this story but Mr Will Wheaton himself makes it 1000% better. I have decided formally request that he narrate my life.
