Publisher's summary

From award-winning author Daryl Gregory, whom Library Journal called "[a] bright new voice of the 21st century", comes a new breed of zombie novel - a surprisingly funny, vividly frightening, and ultimately deeply moving story of self-discovery and family love.

In 1968, after the first zombie outbreak, Wanda Mayhall and her three young daughters discover the body of a teenage mother during a snowstorm. Wrapped in the woman's arms is a baby - stone-cold, not breathing, and without a pulse. But then his eyes open and look up at Wanda, and he begins to move. The family hides the child - whom they name Stony - rather than turn him over to authorities who would destroy him.

Against all scientific reason, the undead boy begins to grow. For years, his adoptive mother and sisters manage to keep his existence a secret - until one terrifying night when Stony is forced to run, and he learns that he is not the only living dead boy left in the world.

"Raising Stony Mayhall should add to Daryl Gregory's reputation as a dazzling innovator....a fast-paced, exciting narrative laced with both humor and moments of pathos." (Locus)
"Part superhero fiction, part zombie horror story, and part supernatural thriller, this luminous and compelling tale deserves a wide readership beyond genre fans. Highly recommended." (Library Journal)

Interesting Beginning

The story was great at the beginning but went on too long with jumping years and even decades. The was way too much swearing. Excessive actually. A lot of F-bombs. The ending was surprising but a decent ending.

A New Take on Zombies

I love zombies. And I love reading about zombies, but sometimes the books all blend together.

Raising Stony Mayhall was a completely refreshing look at zombies, and I really loved the mythology used. I bought this book on a whim, so I was very surprised by how much I enjoyed it.

My favorite part of the book was the time setting, loved the revisionist aspect of adding zombies to our history. Gregory also creates a large cast of well developed characters, even though Stony is the narrator. The book also served up some surprises that I didn't see coming.

Great narration by David Marantz only increases the zombie goodness!

Amazingly well done drama!

If you could sum up Raising Stony Mayhall in three words, what would they be?

Love makes us all one.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Stony. He bribed the gap between races as so many great historical figures have in the past

From the Living Dead's (Zombies) Point of View

Most Zombie books, even well written ones, get repetitious. End of the world setup, living try to get away from zombies, and lots of blood. Stony Mayhall had a bit of that but it was more from the zombies point of view. Not ALL zombies are all bad, a zombie with a heart of Gold.

Would love to know what happens next!

I think this is a story that could definitely have a sequel. I feel like their is more story, more Stony waiting.

The narration was good, but it had an odd rhythm too it. The pace felt slow and just "off" somehow. I tried listening at a faster speed thinking that would help, but it didn't.
