Quicksilver: An Arcane Society Novel, Book 11

Virginia Dean wakes at midnight beside a dead body, with a bloody knife in her hand and no memory of the evening’s events. Dark energy, emanating from the mirrors lining the room, overpowers her senses. With no apparent way in or out, she’s rescued by a man she’s met only once before, but won’t soon forget.... Owen Sweetwater inherited his family’s talent for hunting the psychical monsters who prey on London’s women and children, and his investigation into the deaths of two glass-readers has led him here.

Publisher's Summary

Virginia Dean wakes at midnight beside a dead body, with a bloody knife in her hand and no memory of the evening’s events. Dark energy, emanating from the mirrors lining the room, overpowers her senses. With no apparent way in or out, she’s rescued by a man she’s met only once before, but won’t soon forget....

Owen Sweetwater inherited his family’s talent for hunting the psychical monsters who prey on London’s women and children, and his investigation into the deaths of two glass-readers has led him here. The high-society types of the exclusive Arcane Society would consider Virginia an illusionist, a charlatan, even a criminal. But Owen knows better. Virginia’s powers are real - and so is the power she exerts over him simply with her presence. And if her abilities can be relied upon in the midst of great danger, they just might be the key to his investigation.

Listen to another Arcane Society novel.

    "Same old same old"

If you've read any of this batch of Amanda Quick tales, you know exactly what to expect, down to murmured endearments and descriptions of the 'deed' by the self-proclaimed 'woman of the world'. And if you've listened to these books, you probably have Anne Flosnik's voices down pat, as well. And both women, writer and narrator, are professional and competent with their individual crafts, so if you liked them before, you'll probably like this one as well.

"Worst audio book I've ever experienced."
What would have made Quicksilver better?

The voice of the reader is annoying beyond belief. I couldn't get beyond the irritating voice to fully appreciate the author's story. Deeply disappointed.

    "I love this series!"
What did you love best about Quicksilver?

I loved finally getting some history on the Sweetwater family.

What did you like best about this story?

I liked Owen's character. He was a good guy who did bad things for a living.

What does Anne Flosnik bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

    She brings the dialogue alive.

    "Pretty typical, pretty good"

I like Amanda Quick and the Arcane series. I like the paranormal concept and ideas of the talants, so I tend not to judge these books harshly even when not great. This one really is pretty good. I didn't have me dying to get back in the car to listen or regretting when I got to a destination and had to stop, but when I was listening, I enjoyed it (I drove 800 miles around AZ on a business trip while listening).

I enjoy some of the clever ideas the author comes up with related to the paranormal talents of the characters. I appreciate that the women tend to be a little bit feisty and that the men appreciate that about the women. While I'm not listening for the sex scenes, I appreciate it if there is some passion there, and in many books this author is a little bit... um, perfunctory. In this book, there was something good between the characters.

Worth the half-price download (or credit) - can't remember how I got this one.

"Slow start and doesn't gain much momentum"

I'm an Amanda Quick fan from way back, and bought the print version of this book when it was first published. I had a tough time getting started, though. It didn't grab me as most of Jayne Ann Krentz's other historicals have. I bought the audiobook because I wanted to get through this one, since it's part of a series. Ran into the same problem. The reader, however, was wonderful and made the audio version as entertaining as possible.

    "Mirror, Mirror."

The Arcane series is starting to drool on and on. It started out good but has declined rapidly. This one is a bit better than the last couple of arcane books. I like it better when Amanda Quick does individual books. I don’t know why I just don’t give them up, but for some unknown reason I keep listening to them. As in with many of Amanda Quick books, there is the element of sameness, which doesn’t bother me since I usually enjoy Amanda Quick.
