Publisher's summary

Tavi of Calderon, now recognized as Princeps Gaius Octavian and heir to the crown, has achieved a fragile alliance with Alera's oldest foes, the savage Canim. But when Tavi and his legions guide the Canim safely to their lands, his worst fears are realized.

The dreaded Vord - the enemy of Aleran and Cane alike - have spent the last three years laying waste to the Canim homeland. And when the Alerans are cut off from their ships, they find themselves with no choice but to fight shoulder to shoulder if they are to survive.

For 1,000 years, Alera and her furies have withstood every enemy and survived every foe. The 1,000 years are over....

Another good book in the series! Many story threads are now coming together! A good reading as usual from the narrator

Awesome story!

The audio book sounds like it skips a few parts, mostly just sentences that get cut off in the later chapters, but beyond that this story was fascinating to listen to. One of the most epic fantasy battles I have read. Now on to book 6! The hooks at the end really make me want to keep on reading.

Better and better!

The story of Tavi just gets more and more interesting! Kate Reading does a brilliant job in all of the books by getting the personality of every character perfect!

Great except for the narration

Kate Reading is an excellent narrator, but she was the wrong choice for this series. Codex Alera has such a wide variety of male characters that Ms. Readings' limited range of voice inflection did not do them justice. Tavi still sounds like the same mentally-challenged child he did in book one, and not one of the males sounded authentic with the exception of Ehren.

Choppy audio

Great everything except the audio is choppy in points, annoying and a little distracting. I kept thinking it was skipping and had to run it back a little to make sure I didn't miss any of the story.

Vord - The enemy of your nightmare

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me both laugh and cry.

Any additional comments?

I'm sorry to see the Canem land and the death of Gaius Sextus. This book is packed with a lot of draw dropping WTF moments and seriously did that just happen? I do have to say I got teary-eyed when Nasaug & Varg saw their family and clan again. It was an amazingly sweet moment. It was probably by far my fav book in the Codex series.
