Publisher's summary

Tavi of Calderon, now recognized as Princeps Gaius Octavian and heir to the crown, has achieved a fragile alliance with Alera's oldest foes, the savage Canim. But when Tavi and his legions guide the Canim safely to their lands, his worst fears are realized.

The dreaded Vord - the enemy of Aleran and Cane alike - have spent the last three years laying waste to the Canim homeland. And when the Alerans are cut off from their ships, they find themselves with no choice but to fight shoulder to shoulder if they are to survive.

For 1,000 years, Alera and her furies have withstood every enemy and survived every foe. The 1,000 years are over....

great book, terrible audio

so many crackles and pops - feels like they didn't have a good tape/CD to make the audio file from.

better than the previous one

This book doesn't suffer from some of the pacing issues that the previous volume did, although it does take a while to really get to the good parts--once they start, they keep you going at a decent clip. I was surprised how poorly I remembered the plot from my original reading, years ago.

It does get a bit silly, the narrative hoops that keep all the characters apart from each other. In this volume, it got a little tiresome, jumping between what ended up being four different places and five or six different point of view characters.

That being said, there is no shortage of fun, exciting, tense situations in this book, and it was a blast, as expected.

Epic stuff indeed

A vast improvement over the already excellent other books in this series. What can I say other than that most of my minor gripes with the previous books were gone in this one. And when I say most, I mean all except those accursed trumpets hahaha.

All in all, a great listen that I highly recommend. At the end of it I was very glad that I had an extra credit ready for the last book!

Jim Butcher and Kate Reading do it again!

loved the story and the narrator drew me into it. I'll be sad when the series ends.

Worth the read...or listen!

Codex Alera is one of my favorite fantasy series! It has a few cliches, but Butcher makes it work. It isn’t as in depth as Stormlight or Ice and Fire, but it is a fun story filled with great characters. My favorite character possibly in all fantasy is Varg and I’m a huge Abercrombie fan, so that’s saying something. Enjoy
