"Setting the table for more goodness to come"

Somewhere in the past I have listened to the abridged versions of Trudi Canavan's "Age of Five." I couldn't resist buying the unabridged audio-books.

Personally I prefer the fantasy universe of the "Age of Five" beyond that of the Canavan's Magician's guild and its offspring. That said, if you like those books, "Priestess of the White" will not be altogether alien. By now I think I can safely say that Canavan likes the idea of magical healing. The good guys in her books are always healers. The lead character is a woman that discovers her own strength and has an open-minded approach towards a seemingly "forbidden" sexual relationship with a man. Furthermore, like all other Canavan books, war is eminent or looming.

So why do I give four stars? Because, I think that the "Age of Five" trilogy is definitely better than her "Spy Traitor" trilogy. It doesn't get entangled into literary devices that makes the book almost completely predictable. Furthermore it relaxing.

I am not sure which is the best, the abridged or the unabridged version of "Priestess of the White." While Samantha Bond has an extraordinary voice with which she brings Canavan's universe to life in the abridged version of the book, Sarah Douglas can also be credited with a lot of talent. (All three books in the unabridged version is read by her, while it is not the case with the abridged versions.)

Story-wise, I didn't feel that I missed much by listening to the abridged version over against the unabridged one. Yet, I thoroughly enjoyed revisiting the world Canavan has created.

"Priestess of the White" is a good story that is quite enjoyable and much better that Canavan's "Spy Traitor" trilogy. I suspect that you might find a lot of the author herself in Auraya, the lead character, and that is probably why it is a success.

It sets the stage for an enjoyable adventure in which no one seems to be who they are or know who they will be in future...

"Juicy epic fantasy to satisfy the toughest critic"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely. It has a intuitive and appealing flow between stories that knit it together seamlessly. The performance was perfect, giving a very clear voice to every character. So much happens but nothing feels unnecessary or overcrowded.

What did you like best about this story?

The multi POV stories. This device makes all the stories feel personal to the listener and you become very attached to the characters.

Which character – as performed by Sarah Douglas – was your favorite?

Mischief the Veez! It made me want to demand Judi Cannavan produce one for me to keep immediately.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Both, actually. It doesn't take long to become seriously invested in the characters of this world.

    Any additional comments?

Weaving such an epic fantasy creation is fraught with difficulties. If the author fails, you lose the connection and the sheer length of the story becomes intimidating and you end up ditching it. With this amazing story, I just found I was so glad to have these hours of sheer listening pleasure ahead of me.

What made the experience of listening to Priestess of the White the most enjoyable?

Interesting story, great characters and very well read. Looked forward to listening every step of the way, where as I often need to take a break as the story dips or the narrators voice begins to grate.

Where does Priestess of the White rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I could not put this book down. I has a great storyline and Trudi does a good job giving a picture to the world it is set in without being boring about it. Just downloading the next one now can wait for more.

Don't know if it was the story or the narration but it didn't fully grab me - interesting enough to finish but not enough to look for the next book.

"I love Trudi Canavan - but Sarah Douglas?"

I love Trudi Canavan's work. I've really tried to get into this story, honestly. I've put 5 hours into it and still, I don't really know what's going on because my mind wanders from it so easily. The problem I'm having is that there is not a lot of differentiation between characters and scenes in Sarah Douglas' narration. It's not exactly monotone, but it certainly is not as dynamic as I'm used to (spoiled by great narration, I suppose) Her diction is great, she has a pleasant voice and I think she'd do a fantastic job narrating a non-fiction/self-help book or something. It's just that Ms. Canavan's characters are multi-dimensional and deserve a more dynamic interpretation. I'm going to keep at it because I think the story is going to be great, it's just going to take a lot of concentration which means getting it on audible is a waste of money for me. I'll purchase the kindle version for the next two books. (I may have to get it for this one if I continue to have difficulty)

    "Love it"

I am a big big fan of Trudi Canavan and have all her books in hard copy, as e-books, as CD’s and now thanks to Audible i now have them on my i Phone to so as you can guess i love her books. Although i prefer to listen to mens voices Sarah Douglas reads the story well and is pleasant to listen to. The story is magical as well as being a love story it keeps you hooked though out not just the book but the whole trilogy. Every book finishes making you beg for more.

    "An enjoyable listen"

I had listened to all the Trudi Canavan books on audible up until recently, so was really pleased when I saw this trilogy was now available, having really enjoyed the other books I'd heard. It took me a little longer to get into this one than it had her others, but once I did, I enjoyed it. It's surprising how different she has managed to make this trilogy from the other ones I've listened to.

I often find that sci-fi and fantasy books aren't very well written, but Trudi Canavan is definitely an exception to this. Her stories develop the characters strongly and flow well, with an interesting story line to them. I'd certainly recommend her to others who like this genre.

Whilst listening to this trilogy I have found myself looking for things to do on my own so I can listen uninterupted- even peeling vegetables and cleaning the bathroom!!!! A great story with numerous sidelines that merge to form a wonderful rounded story with a interesting message

    "Complicated"

I have enjoyed The black magician and traitor spy trilogies and thought I would try the white priestess. I was disappointed, I had to listen to most of it two or three times. It was complicated as there are lots of different types of 'people' 'countries' and 'names', this meant if My concentration wandered for any reason, I was lost. I did not feel the narrator differentiated enough between the characters and I was very confused about who was speaking.

If you could sum up Priestess of the White in three words, what would they be?

Three words to sum up this book would be, next volume please!

What other book might you compare Priestess of the White to, and why?

I love magic and fantasy, I think it s difficult to compare any as all can be similar as well as completely different. Maybe a simpler form of Terry Brooks style.

Have you listened to any of Sarah Douglas’s other performances? How does this one compare?

This is the first I have heard of Sarah narrations, I will certainly look out for her in the future.

    "Interesting theology themed story"

It took a little while to get hooked, you have to go with the unusual terminology until it is fully explained later (the story is set in a completely different world where magic is an every day gift for a lot of people). Once I got used to it then it all flowed better for me and most things are explained later and match up quite well with what I had guessed the equivalents would be.
The trilogy is essentially about religion and relationships that exist in and around contrasting beliefs. Big plot twist of the trilogy is a tad predictable (guessed it by the end of the first book) but you are left until the bitter end of the last book to find out if you are right or not.

    "An amazing series."

For those of you who are Science Fiction fans this series is a must. If you are not a Science fiction fan then I would still recommend it as an excellent read. The author has a way of using description that takes you into the story and makes you a part of the characters’ lives. The trials and tribulations of the main character Auraya keeps you reading on. However, the author also brings many other characters into the story and you are equally bold along by them and their part in the plot.

The story is cleverly written with lots of insight into prejudice against race and religion from different characters perspectives and opinions.

I would highly recommend it... a fascinating read!

    "An okay listen"

This book is well read but I am not rushing to get the rest in the series. I may end up getting the rest if I have no other books that catch my fancy. I think the story it a little too hit or miss for my tastes and seems to take a long time to get anywhere. It is wonderfully fun in places with interesting ideas but compared to other books by Trudii Canavan I found this one disappointing.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

If this was written in the same way as the last two trilogies

Would you ever listen to anything by Trudi Canavan again?

I have listened to the magician trilogy and the traitor trilogy and thought they were really good but after this book I would have to think about it as I feel I have wasted my money

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Sarah Douglas?

No I found her hard to listen to I would prefer the guy who was the narrator for the last two trilogies

What character would you cut from Priestess of the White?

All of them very hard to believe in any of them

    Any additional comments?

    Total waste of time
