This urban fantasy set contains the first three books of the Preternatural Affairs series: Witch Hunt, Silver Bullet, and Hotter Than Helltown.
My name's Cesar Hawke. I'm a witch working for a division of the government you've never heard about.
The world's not what everyone thinks it is - unless you think that our world's a pawn in a game of chess between Heaven and Hell, and riddled with as much magic and wonder as it is with evil.
In that case, the world is exactly what you think.
My place of employment - the Office of Preternatural Affairs - takes a modern approach to an ages-old problem. It used to be that inquisitors would burn demons and the people in league with them. Now we get warrants, perform arrests, put the suspects on trial, and send guilty parties back to the Hell from whence they came with the travel forms filled out in triplicate.
This stuff I do with the OPA, it saves lives on most days.
Most days, I said.

I'm pretty sure I'm addicted to audio books! It's a good thing they don't weigh much and don't take up much shelf space.
Hi did his best but he was working with a sophomorphic piece of crap.
Frustration! The author needs a dictionary! If you are going to use a poultice in your story you could at least look it up and find out how it is used! You don't eat a poultice. It was disappointing because I spend good money buying books and it's an investment in someone's writing career when I do. This author did not live up to his end of the bargain. Tired cliches, using words he didn't understand, using every scatological word in the English language whether they were called for or not, total lack of character development etc., etc., etc. what terrible writing!
"Praise Allah", "
"Yeah, baby it's me"
"The room spun around me"
This is the best this author could come up with?
I love to read to escape. I like to walk in the stores with a good book, browse the mall on a rainy day and people watch while I listen.
I would have liked the story more with less of his personal comments.
Girls, smart remarks, really a weak character.
I made it thru the 3 books,, but that is it.
His voice is good it was the character he was playing.
Not to purchase anymore.
More story and less of the wise crack stuff.
Vamps! Vamp! Shapshifter! Vamps! Need I say more?
The book was good and the narrator was better. I don't normally like male narrators but I really enjoyed listening to this book.
I am a huge fan of the Iron Druid Chronicles & this series of books draws you in just as they do. There is just enough sexual tension mixed in between the characters to make it interesting and flow with the story but not to draw away from the real storyline. If you are a fan of supernatural story lines, this series is one
to take a chance with!
I don't just love to read books. I love to listen, smell them, collect them and even read about them. My daily vitamins. (๑°꒵°๑)･*♡
I had originally purchased the Audible set after it being suggested; for being narrated by Jeffrey Kafer. So far all his books have been perfection; even after reading Kindle version and been disappointed. All the characters have their own singularities and emotions felt. You forget it's narrated by the same person. Awesome!!
The novel itself keeps you captivated throughout all three stories! I was thrilled when finding out all three novels were available!! Forget having or collecting different covers. I was instantly hooked!! I could imagine this "normal" world with people able to perform magic, and all the different weirdos that practice the occult. Having a special department to control those who practice magic, made it adventurous. I haven't checked out the next book in series. But, if it's like the first three, I would recommend as stand alone for teenagers or Young Adults. Thank you so much for this collection. The suspense kept you immerse in the stories; and César Hawke's allergies to magic was a trip! Much looking forward and getting ready for the next!
SM Reine has begun another great series that I will definitely be following. I love the characters Ceszar. He reminds me a little bit of Colombo; sort of bungling his way through cases and clues but when it gets down to it, he's the real deal. I also like his his partner Susie, small but power packed, and his, James Bond-ish boss Fritz. They make a wonderful team and I look forward to more of their adventures.
I also look forward to seeing how they work out the Fritz, Ceszar, Isabel triangle. That should be fun!! Her glitter bomb in book 2 was outstanding!!
The genre of supernatural adventure and suspense is an old friend, but Preternatural Affairs was a road not travelled as yet traveled. Fortunately we are led down the twist and turns of this well written who(or what)-done it by a strong performance by a very talented reader.
There are many other purveyors of this genre but I can really says PA is exactly like any of the other books I have read ( or heard ) so far... And that is one reason I think I enjoyed it so much.
To try and pick a favorite scene in three separate books would be folkish of me..there were many good scenes. That's what makes a good book ( or books).
Having an extreme reaction to this book? That's easy...the pacing never slowed down. So my extreme reaction would be "wow...let me catch my breath!".
in the first 5 minutes we discover our protagonist is a sexist dick wad obsessed with his dick. I decided to stop listening very quickly. not worth my damn time if that shit is how the author decides to start a novel. urgh. disgusting.
"Urban Fantasy meets strong masculine male"
Gripping, laugh-out-loud moments and addicting
Definitely has to be the main character!
Jeffrey's voice is so masculine and he is so great in narrating. His feminine voices that he does I must say is quite good!
"Doesn't grab the imagination"
I liked the ideas behind the stories but didn't like the hero; he wasn't heroic and came across as bland. I did persevere in the hope that the character would evolve but he didn't he was just as boring/bland at the end of the third book as at the beginning of the first. I won't be listening again which for me is a big tell of how much pleasure a book has given me.
I really enjoyed these three books. They were the first books by SM Reine that I tried and will definitely continue.
My favourite character? Who knows? I do know that I don't really trust any of them and am waiting for whoever is going to be the traitor to come forward. it is well written and keeps you guessing to the end.
I enjoyed the narration and would definitely consider other novels read by him
