It only takes a drop to change a world. It only takes a kiss to change a lifetime.
Poison is a beautiful retelling of the Snow White story which takes all the elements of the classic fairy-tale that we love (the handsome prince, the jealous queen, the beautiful girl and, of course, the poisoning) and puts a modern spin on the characters, their motives and their desires.
It's fun, contemporary, sexy, and perfect for fans of Once Upon a Time, Grimm, Snow White and The Huntsman and more.
Read by Katie Scarfe, produced by Peter Rinne.

”Poison is Pinborough's take on Snow White, and while all the recognisable furniture is there, she takes the story in directions that would have Walt Disney's (apocryphally) frozen head spinning in its cryogenic chamber. Loads of fun and very saucy with it.” (Independent on Sunday)

"Great, except for two things"
Lovely new take on the Sleeping Beauty story, as told from the perspective of the Queen, huntsman and prince. Also, well narrated.
But you should know these two things:
1) it has a very strange and unsatisfying ending. I don't know if this is a series and it's 'to be continued', but I wasn't happy.
2) It reads like a nice YA book for teens, with well-handled, subtle allusions to sex, and then suddenly dumps you into one chapter with really graphically-described sexual encounters, before becoming all subtle again. Very strange! And something to bear in mind before you buy it for a kid or younger teen.
"Witty and sexy adult fairytale"
I wasn't sure whether or not I would enjoy this from the description but once I got into it, I was quite enchanted (ha!).
All the traditional fairy tale elements of Snow White are here: wicked queens, handsome princes, loyal dwarves etc. but it's a lot darker. If you want sweetness, innocence and happy ever after, you probably won't find what you are looking for here.
I like Katie Scarfe's narration - it has the right tone and she handles voices well. Although it seems to be a general rule of audio narration that if a male character in fantasy is a bit rough but sexy he will have a generic northern accent. (I blame it on Sean Bean from Lady Chatterley onwards)
"A fairytale for the realists in the world..."
Well this is a different take on the traditional Snow White - it is somewhat akin to adding poison to a perfectly good tasting drink - taints everything that follows. Or more accurately it's what we get when we add reality to a perfectly good fairytale.
Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy this book even if its clearly not a fairytale. This story provides better motives to the traditional story or at least ones that are more believable.
I liked how she weaved different fairytales into this book and I thought she did a good job of explaining the wicked queen's motives... I mean it's easier to believe that someone who is miserable wants you to be miserable then just believing a person wants to be evil.
The narration was good and I liked the production as a whole.
A fun listen with a dark twist. A fairytale for the realists in the world!
"Third times a charm"
I've now listened to this audio book for the third time and would listen again with glee. It's a great twist on the familiar love story of Snow White and Prince Charming with a feminist edge for anybody interested in that line of though. Even for those who aren't, is recommend this read. It's a familiar story with modern twists and turns that will keep you smiling throughout.
"Snow white in a new light!"
I love all of these books and the story they have become, very twisted and dark. Love it
