Publisher's summary

For the first time as an Orbit special edition, Brent Weeks's blockbuster novella Perfect Shadow tells the origin story of the Night Angel trilogy's most enigmatic character: Durzo Blint.

Gaelan Starfire is a farmer, happy to be a husband and a father; a careful, quiet, simple man. He's also an immortal, peerless in the arts of war. Over the centuries, he's worn many faces to hide his gift, but he is a man ill-fit for obscurity, and all too often he's become a hero, his very names passing into legend: Acaelus Thorne, Yric the Black, Hrothan Steelbender, Tal Drakkan, Rebus Nimble.

But when Gaelan must take a job hunting down the world's finest assassins for the beautiful courtesan-and-crimelord Gwinvere Kirena, what he finds may destroy everything he's ever believed in.

Voice actor threw me off

After the night angel trilogy I had grown accustomed to certain voices for certain characters, not to say James Langton was bad, quite the opposite. I just found it harder to delve back into the immersion that I had been in during the reading of the trilogy for about the first half hour. Still a great story and performance.

Enjoyable

I liked this one. Good background info of Durzo, nice short listen while still engaging and entertaining.

fun novela, voice was far too pretty for character

fun to see a little bit of the character development of durzo blint and his backstory. it took me a long time to get over the voice for the book. He sounded like some sort of old-time courtesan instead of a 400 year old Soldier turned assassin.

A Night Angel Review

A fun and enjoyable expansion into the backstory of Durzo and Mama K. As well as Durzo's own brain. For someone who enjoyed the serious enough to still name it my favorite a decade later: I loved it.

Listening Vs. Reading

What made the experience of listening to Perfect Shadow the most enjoyable?

The pacing and voices of the reader made the action come alive, and gave the book new life and new detail. Parts that may have been difficult to understand were brought to life, and given a new context. This made me even more excited after listening to the book.

What about James Langton’s performance did you like?

I loved the voice changes and the pacing.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

needs a different narrator

I loved this, but I have issues with the narrator. He mispronounced so many names that it nearly made me stop listening. other than that, it's great :)

It was Meh.

Overall it was OK. Performance was great. But the overall story - it was Meh. I am fine with violence, sex scenes, murder, monologues that go on for ever. What I am not ok with is how every character seems the same. I felt like the author put himself inside this book too often so that the main character seemed like he had multiple personalities which didn't seem part of the story. And I am fine with asshole characters buy when the main characters is an asshole throughout the series, I just can't dig it.
