Publisher's Summary

The day was like any other day - until it became "The Day". At 4:05 p.m., the United States was attacked with an Electro-Magnetic Pulse (EMP) weapon. A 20 mega-ton nuclear warhead was detonated high in the atmosphere above Kansas, blanketing most of the contiguous United States and parts of Canada and Mexico with an electro-magnetic pulse that damaged nearly all microprocessors and electronic controls beyond repair. Nearly every system that depends on computers and electronics has ceased to work. The electrical grid goes down. The water system goes down. The sewer system goes down. The phone system goes down. The cellular system goes down. Cars stop. Tractors stop. Radio and TV stations go dark. The Internet is no more. No more ambulance services. No more emergency services. No more government services. No more 911. In the twinkle of an eye, America is sent back deep into the 19th century.

Jill Barnes, a single mom, finds herself stranded on the side of Interstate 485 near Birmingham, Alabama. Jack Chance, a bank vice president, is stranded on Interstate 85 near Montgomery, Alabama. John Carter, a contractor, finds himself stranded near Leeds, Alabama. Each must travel home to Clarke County in rural southwest Alabama. Follow them as they each make their decisions and journey home while the fabric of American society is torn asunder and criminals run amok. The story is exciting and enlightening, compelling and fast moving, infuriating and redemptive, heart-rending and heart-warming. Keep some tissue close, just in case....

    Any additional comments?

The dual first person narration is irritating. "she said" - "he said" let just say what they said. The overall story was good but there were long moments of waiting for action and then BANG another disaster - thank goodness. The way the John rattles off gun and ammunition specs should have have raised some red flags with ole Jill I think. I didn't mind the religious aspect of the store. As a matter of fact it was refreshing to hear. I would think being in a disaster such as an EMP would require a lot of praying.

"Not a page turner or edge of the seat book"

The basic story was OK at best. The second person telling of the story made the book a bad read. The dialogue between the characters was unrealistic and sappy. I finished the book only because I wanted to know if the primary characters made it home, and I always try to finish books I start. Save your time and choose a different book.

"There truly is a Murphy's Law"

A, in my opinion, very well directed audible story.
Narration excellent having a female speaking for the female characters (Holly Henrichs).
All male characters were done equally well (Michael Stadler). The narration by these two was superb. Both had a very wide range of voices and dialects, it was a treat to listen to.
This proves out what I have always thought that there should be two narrators, male and female.
    these two meshed perfectly.

"very interesting, unrealistic John so trained"

John would have been abnormal but it was cool that he knew key skills sets. John not being military was the most unbelievable part. Jill also seemed a bit too skilled for reality. she also might be more traumatised in reality

    "Good Story"
Would you consider the audio edition of Once upon an Apocalypse to be better than the print version?

I haven't read the book, but, the story is great. It is hard to listen to, not in first person, and the setting is Alabama and the narrators don't have a Southern accent as they should. Also the narration doesn't move smoothly from character to character.

Who was your favorite character and why?

    didn't have one.

What didn’t you like about Holly Henrichs and Michael Stadler ’s performance?

Wrong accent and a little stilted.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    No

    Any additional comments?

for book two please get the accents correct.

    "Worst writing style ever"
What would have made Once upon an Apocalypse better?

I only lasted 10 minutes and then returned book this was horrible, I couldn't get past writing style which was painful to hear, didn't like narration either, not sure if it was because of writing style or narrator.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Nothing else by this offer, there are great books out there on this topic like One Second After.

Would you be willing to try another one of Holly Henrichs and Michael Stadler ’s performances?

    No

    Any additional comments?

Don't waste your credits or money.

    "Worst writing style"
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

    N/A

Has Once upon an Apocalypse turned you off from other books in this genre?

    No

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Holly Henrichs and Michael Stadler ?

    N/A

What character would you cut from Once upon an Apocalypse?

    N/A

    Any additional comments?

The weird first person writing style is just impossible to listen to. It's a Choose Your Own Adventure book where you don't make any decisions.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Only a different author could improve this tosh

Has The Journey Home put you off other books in this genre?

    No just this series

What three words best describe Holly Henrichs and Michael Stadler ’s performance?

decent ...given the material they had to work with

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Journey Home?

    All of them!

    Any additional comments?

Demonstrates a level of writing sophistication I've not seen since my 5 year old wrote on my kitchen wall with a crayon. Written (and I use that term loosely} in the 2nd person !!!!! Suitable only for Trump supporters an the under 10's
