Publisher's Summary

Ten years ago, the 20th century and the Bronze Age were tossed together by a mysterious Event. In the decade since, the Republic of Nantucket has worked hard to create a new future for itself, using the technological know-how retained from modern times to explore and improve conditions for the inhabitants of the past.

Some of these peoples have become allies. Some have turned instead to the renegade Coast Guard officer William Walker. And, for 10 years, the two sides have tested each other, feinting and parrying, to decide who will be the ones to lead this brave new world into the future. The final battle lines have now been drawn. And only one side can emerge the victor.

Driving over 100,000 mile a year since 1983, I got hooked on audible books on tape 30 years back. I now listen from my bicycle 2 hours a day

    Story
"Through the first two books of the series"

and I am richer for the experience. These travels back through time somewhat reminiscent of Weber's Safehold series are such an enlightening mix of history and science fiction. Nantucket citizens of the present are cast back 30 centuries into the past privileged to forge a brave new world. The characters are unexpected time travelers. Who would conceive of a black woman admiral in command of the Nantucket navy doing battle with the ancient Greeks and Egyptians led by one of the most evil characters ever brought to life in literature? I cheered her victories out loud. 75 hours of relentless interest. What a great series. Buy this and you won't be disappointed if you would love to change the past.
This third installment got quite a bit more tedious than the first two installments covering too much territory and too many battles as the characters got lost in the action. But I suppose it was difficult to avoid. I loved the first two books and merely enjoyed most of the third.

    "STIRLINGS GREATEST(SO FAR) DISAPPOINTMENT!!!!!!!!!"
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

THIS BOOK ISN'T FOR ANYONE. YOU NEVER KNOW WHERE IN THE HELL YOU ARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! VERY CONFUSING

What was most disappointing about S. M. Stirling’s story?

THERE ARE TOOOOOOOOO MANY PEOPLE TO TRY TO KEEP UP WITH. AT THE BEGINNING OF A CHAPTER HE NAMES OFF 3 OR MORE LOCATIONS AND DATES, THEN HE GOES INTO A GROUP AND AS THE TALE IS TOLD, HE SWITCHES TO SOME WHERE ELSE AROUND THE WORLD WITH COMPLETELY DIFFERENT PEOPLE. THERE ARE TOOO MANY PEOPLE TO TRY TO KEEP UP WITH AND LOCATIONS THAT KEEP CHANGING.

    Which scene was your favorite?

HARDLY ANY, THOSE WHEN AUSTIN IS IN THE STORM, IF ANY

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    NONE IN MY OPENION

    Any additional comments?

I AM A GREAT LOVER OF STIRLINGS WRITINGS AND HAVE LISTENED TO ALL, I THINK, OF HIS BOOKS ON EARTH AND ONE ON ANOTHER PLANET. THE "CHANGE SERIES" IS BY FAR MY FAVORITE SERIES AND I AWAIT EACH SEPTEMBER IN HOPES THAT THE BOOK WILL FINALLY END . I KNOW THE PEOPLE IN THE STORIES AND CAN KEEP UP WITH THEM. I'VE LISTENED TO THEM SEVERAL TIMES AND WILL AGAIN. I'M 69 YEARS OLD AND TOO OLD TO READ LONG STORIES AND THE AUDIO BOOKS ARE A PLEASURE. I WOULD LISTEN TO THEM EVEN IF I WERE ABLE TO READ AT THIS TIME. AUDIBLE.COM IS A GEM IN THE WORLD OF STONES. THANK YOU FOR BEING THERE.RESPECTFULLY, GBG

    Story
    "The fractured multiverse"
What would have made On the Oceans of Eternity better?

A storyline which had one time-line instead of chapters with 4+ different times with 4+ different places... each of which related to one another though they may be the end or beginning?! I want less characters so I can get to know and care for them rather than a people who seem to be multiplying like bacteria. I want to see how the gestalt comes about rather than shards of time fractures. The first book had more about the engineering side of things which I liked though it isn't for everyone. I have read another review which said that the story could be split with the main thread then other (preferably) mini-books being released with side adventures would be one solution.

What will your next listen be?

I have dies the fire by the same author and I will give it a go. I'm really turned off by the idea though to be honest.

Have you listened to any of Todd McLaren’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I have listened to Todd McLaren before. I'd say he's a safe pair of hands and in my experience delivers a consistently B- to B+ performance (though never amazing). On this recording I felt he needed to slow down with the ridiculous chapter headings (though the chapter headings were not his fault).

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Confusion due to the awful design and frustration with the authors need to turn a 250 page page-turner into a flabby War and Peace.

    Any additional comments?

I really enjoyed the previous 2 books in the Nantucket series, although they were not perfect. However, the awful way the Chapters were written made it impossible to keep track of key events without a campaign map, notes and probably a written copy too. I gave up 50% of the way through download 2 of 4 and doubt I'd go back to it.
