National Best Seller

Selected as one of NPR's Top 100 Science Fiction and Fantasy Books of All Time

The number one New York Times best-selling author's wildly successful first novel featuring his new Neverwhere tale, "How the Marquis Got His Coat Back".

Richard Mayhew is a young man with a good heart and an ordinary life, which is changed forever when he stops to help a girl he finds bleeding on a London sidewalk. His small act of kindness propels him into a world he never dreamed existed. There are people who fall through the cracks, and Richard has become one of them. And he must learn to survive in this city of shadows and darkness, monsters and saints, murderers and angels, if he is ever to return to the London that he knew.

"A fantastic story that is both the stuff of dreams and nightmares" (San Diego Union-Tribune), Neil Gaiman's first solo novel has become a touchstone of urban fantasy and a perennial favorite of readers and listeners everywhere.

Critic reviews

"Gaiman's gift for mixing the absurd with the frightful gives this novel the feeling of a bedtime story with adult sophistication. Readers will find themselves as unable to escape this tale as the characters themselves." ( Library Journal)
"Delightful…inventively horrific."( USA Today)
"[Gaiman] is, simply put, a treasure house of story, and we are lucky to have him in any media." (Stephen King)

Exciting story, engaging read

Neil Gaiman's books are always adventurous, and his voice is always calming yet engaging. This is my absolute favorite of his stories, though. This book brings vivid life and possibility to the mundane world, and his storytelling triggers the imagination like nothing else. You will be mesmerized and you will be brought into a world of colorful characters, delightful imagery, and just enough reality to make you really connect with all of it.

Fantastic blend of fantasy and authenticity

The characters and setting are almost otherworldly, yet genuinely believable and relatable. Author does a wonderful job at breathing life into them with an excellent reading.

consistently good work

This was not as entertaining as American Gods but was a very easy read that had my imagination racing with so many visual cues to such memorable characters. It was a delight.

Dark but really good.

There isn’t actually any supremely disgusting content or anything like that but the story kind of oozes darkness and disturbingness. Maybe it’s just psychologically upsetting. But it was impossible to stop listening to, and Neil Gaiman did a great job narrating his work. The music between chapters was just short enough to not be jarring, although it called to kind images of jungles and tigers more than subways and monks, but still. What a fascinating concept. I really liked this book.

Overall the story was good, a bit odd but good. I guess I need to watch the TV episodes now.

Biased in the extreme, since I love his books.

He is a wonderful with the added benefit of also being the author, so he knows exactly how everything is supposed to be pronounced and exactly how each character would say their bits of dialogue. He does a fantastic job, hopefully he'll narrate the rest of his stories.

Best fantasy story I've heard in a long time

This story is charming. Stunning. it will be a bit confusing in the beginning, as you try to figure it out. but then, as you continue to listen, you find you don't care. i began to read it, after I started listening. and that is just as enjoyable!
and then, when I was finished, I listened again. Neil Gaiman is a master. and his characters are human. or...

Loved it.

There’s just...something about Lord Gaiman. I enjoy hearing him read his stories to me. I will say that the synopsis of his books do not interest me, but as I read the words, or listen to them, I am captured and taken away.

Awesome story!

This story really draws the reader in and gives another whole world to imagine about! Another great aspect is that Neil Gaiman narrates the story himself, which adds to the story because only can bring the characters to life as he meant them to be! Also there’s a point in the story that really gave me a moment of pause as you consider what the main character is thinking about during his “trial” and “forgotten” may also be dealing with. I look forward to hearing more from Gaiman!
