Publisher's summary

National Best Seller

Selected as one of NPR's Top 100 Science Fiction and Fantasy Books of All Time

The number one New York Times best-selling author's wildly successful first novel featuring his new Neverwhere tale, "How the Marquis Got His Coat Back".

Richard Mayhew is a young man with a good heart and an ordinary life, which is changed forever when he stops to help a girl he finds bleeding on a London sidewalk. His small act of kindness propels him into a world he never dreamed existed. There are people who fall through the cracks, and Richard has become one of them. And he must learn to survive in this city of shadows and darkness, monsters and saints, murderers and angels, if he is ever to return to the London that he knew.

"A fantastic story that is both the stuff of dreams and nightmares" (San Diego Union-Tribune), Neil Gaiman's first solo novel has become a touchstone of urban fantasy and a perennial favorite of readers and listeners everywhere.

Critic reviews

"Gaiman's gift for mixing the absurd with the frightful gives this novel the feeling of a bedtime story with adult sophistication. Readers will find themselves as unable to escape this tale as the characters themselves." ( Library Journal)
"Delightful…inventively horrific."( USA Today)
"[Gaiman] is, simply put, a treasure house of story, and we are lucky to have him in any media." (Stephen King)

Absolutely fabulous in every way.

The presenter is over the top amazing - the best ever. The writer is a brilliant storyteller and wordsmith of Lewis proportions.

Gaiman at his best

A very robust and imaginative fantasy that leaves me wanting a sequel. Gaiman is by far my favorite author-narrator. His use of voices and accents, inflection and emotion lend weight to the characters and story. A++

A wonder!

I could do without the music, a lot too long. But much less irritating than the interludes in The Graveyard Book by the same author. I understand that, at least because it’s ostensibly a book for children.

Weird Concept Done Very Well

Took a flier on this story because of the author. Glad I did. Very enjoyable and unusual book. Gaiman is a terrific performer of his own material.

I was enthralled

At first I was a little against the narrator (sorry mr Gaiman) but after a couple of chapters I saw how he distinguished each character so vividly with tones and reactions and interpretations that I couldn’t help but be hooked on the story. I even loved the part after the story about how The Marquis got his coat back.

Exciting story, engaging read

Neil Gaiman's books are always adventurous, and his voice is always calming yet engaging. This is my absolute favorite of his stories, though. This book brings vivid life and possibility to the mundane world, and his storytelling triggers the imagination like nothing else. You will be mesmerized and you will be brought into a world of colorful characters, delightful imagery, and just enough reality to make you really connect with all of it.

Fantastic blend of fantasy and authenticity

The characters and setting are almost otherworldly, yet genuinely believable and relatable. Author does a wonderful job at breathing life into them with an excellent reading.

consistently good work

This was not as entertaining as American Gods but was a very easy read that had my imagination racing with so many visual cues to such memorable characters. It was a delight.
