Publisher's summary

National Best Seller

Selected as one of NPR's Top 100 Science Fiction and Fantasy Books of All Time

The number one New York Times best-selling author's wildly successful first novel featuring his new Neverwhere tale, "How the Marquis Got His Coat Back".

Richard Mayhew is a young man with a good heart and an ordinary life, which is changed forever when he stops to help a girl he finds bleeding on a London sidewalk. His small act of kindness propels him into a world he never dreamed existed. There are people who fall through the cracks, and Richard has become one of them. And he must learn to survive in this city of shadows and darkness, monsters and saints, murderers and angels, if he is ever to return to the London that he knew.

"A fantastic story that is both the stuff of dreams and nightmares" (San Diego Union-Tribune), Neil Gaiman's first solo novel has become a touchstone of urban fantasy and a perennial favorite of readers and listeners everywhere.

Critic reviews

"Gaiman's gift for mixing the absurd with the frightful gives this novel the feeling of a bedtime story with adult sophistication. Readers will find themselves as unable to escape this tale as the characters themselves." ( Library Journal)
"Delightful…inventively horrific."( USA Today)
"[Gaiman] is, simply put, a treasure house of story, and we are lucky to have him in any media." (Stephen King)

Fun Plot and unique story

Lovely British humor and a unique plot. Wasn’t a fast pace and some characters felt very 2 dimensional while others were fully realized. The interaction between the two casts is my only criticism as it was at times jarring and lifted the veil a bit. The addendum makes up for anything the story is lacking.

In fairness, I’ve read this after reading most of his newer works and it’s clear how far he has come as an author. So, my review is only because it pales in comparison to his later works...except the addendum...which is also a newer piece. Therefore, take this review for what it is...my personal perspective. If you e never experienced Mr. Gaiman-you’re in for a treat.

Welcome to London below

Neil Gaiman, as always, is an excellent narrator.

The story revolves around Richard Mayhew, whose life is thrown into turmoil after he rescues a small girl, and finds that Upper London no longer recognizes that he exists. He ends up on a quest to try and get his life back.

I would compare it to Alice in Wonderland, full of fascinating characters, interesting places, and unexpected juxtapositions that somehow manage to work in bringing that world to life.

One of the most underrated fiction novels. I listened twice back to back within a week. Can't wait to listen a sequel.

Neil writes beautiful words

The story was enjoyable, but what I love about Neil Gaiman is his beautiful words. It’s like poetry but not. It’s witty and charming. Each sentence is a delight. He has such a marvelous reading voice that he himself brings his story to life savoring every word.

Great Book

The book is very entrancing and narrated extraordinarily. Neil has a way with throwing his voice about that you feel trapped in his translation of the words. The story and reading overall is among the best, although it is lacking the wholeness of a truly detailed masterpiece. It is like having a thanksgiving dinner without a Turkey. There is a lot going on, but the world itself needs more explaining; more rounding out.

Another Great Neil Gaiman Work

Neil is amazing at voicing his own characters, and he brings them and his worlds to life. I now love Under London.
