Publisher's summary

National Best Seller

Selected as one of NPR's Top 100 Science Fiction and Fantasy Books of All Time

The number one New York Times best-selling author's wildly successful first novel featuring his new Neverwhere tale, "How the Marquis Got His Coat Back".

Richard Mayhew is a young man with a good heart and an ordinary life, which is changed forever when he stops to help a girl he finds bleeding on a London sidewalk. His small act of kindness propels him into a world he never dreamed existed. There are people who fall through the cracks, and Richard has become one of them. And he must learn to survive in this city of shadows and darkness, monsters and saints, murderers and angels, if he is ever to return to the London that he knew.

"A fantastic story that is both the stuff of dreams and nightmares" (San Diego Union-Tribune), Neil Gaiman's first solo novel has become a touchstone of urban fantasy and a perennial favorite of readers and listeners everywhere.

Critic reviews

"Gaiman's gift for mixing the absurd with the frightful gives this novel the feeling of a bedtime story with adult sophistication. Readers will find themselves as unable to escape this tale as the characters themselves." ( Library Journal)
"Delightful…inventively horrific."( USA Today)
"[Gaiman] is, simply put, a treasure house of story, and we are lucky to have him in any media." (Stephen King)

Loved it so!

Neil Gaiman is an amazing story teller! Neverwhere is captivating from start to finish. I haven't been this swept away by an author and book since I read Narnia as a kid.

Enthralling Story

What did you love best about Neverwhere?

I loved this story. It kept pushing my imagination further and further. Only a few times I suspected what was to happen and those events twisted more . I am anxious to hear more of the lives of these and new characters... an excellent read.

What other book might you compare Neverwhere to and why?

I love this sort of story..each is unique and difficult to compare. So many characters. but not enough to get confused..

What about Neil Gaiman’s performance did you like?

Easy listening, no squeaky made up female voices.. just his manner of speaking and growling as bad guys spoke was entertaining

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I listened to this book straight thru...It was easy to listen to and keep busy..It was like moving in a movie...

Any additional comments?

When I was listening and began looking for more books by the author. I was delighted to find many options...

Spellbound Story

I have heard this story about three times in the last two years, is so appealing because is unbelievable but the rich descriptions make you believe this other world exist. No matter how many times I hear it, always transport me back to that world. But mostly is the way the author narrate and impersonate all the characters. Fantastic book to start hearing books from Neil Gaiman.

By Himself

It is not his finest work but even the masters have but one that can be truly cast in that light. Such is the failing of our language but never the art with which he weaves tales. Neil Gaiman's presentation of his own work is a delightfully satisfying expression of his own mind as he portrays each individual as closely to the shape of his vision which words can not serve fully as we would simply transcribe our own voices and personalities in place of his. This keeps the story his own while sharing it with us as our ancestors would do before we put tools to walls. Oral storytelling is a dying art which Gaiman continues beautifully.

Amazing

Neil Gaiman never ceases to write a wonderful story and I only buy the audiobooks of ones he's narratives because once you hear him read his work, it just doesn't seem right when anyone else does. This is a book I always come back it every year.

A Mite weird, but for all that and amazing book.

I love the way that Neil Gaiman incorporates little Snippets of History and lore into his books. One of the things I really enjoy about this book is that the main character is never complete, even at his Zenith he has more to learn more to experience. All in all just a fantastically fun Odyssey.
