Publisher's summary

National Best Seller

Selected as one of NPR's Top 100 Science Fiction and Fantasy Books of All Time

The number one New York Times best-selling author's wildly successful first novel featuring his new Neverwhere tale, "How the Marquis Got His Coat Back".

Richard Mayhew is a young man with a good heart and an ordinary life, which is changed forever when he stops to help a girl he finds bleeding on a London sidewalk. His small act of kindness propels him into a world he never dreamed existed. There are people who fall through the cracks, and Richard has become one of them. And he must learn to survive in this city of shadows and darkness, monsters and saints, murderers and angels, if he is ever to return to the London that he knew.

"A fantastic story that is both the stuff of dreams and nightmares" (San Diego Union-Tribune), Neil Gaiman's first solo novel has become a touchstone of urban fantasy and a perennial favorite of readers and listeners everywhere.

Critic reviews

"Gaiman's gift for mixing the absurd with the frightful gives this novel the feeling of a bedtime story with adult sophistication. Readers will find themselves as unable to escape this tale as the characters themselves." ( Library Journal)
"Delightful…inventively horrific."( USA Today)
"[Gaiman] is, simply put, a treasure house of story, and we are lucky to have him in any media." (Stephen King)

Great story. Obnoxious noises.

If you could sum up Neverwhere in three words, what would they be?

Inventive, British, Quirky

What other book might you compare Neverwhere to and why?

It reminds me a bit of Alice in Wonderland, or perhaps The Wizard of Oz, only with a grown male protagonist...who is very British. It takes place in a fantasy world that mirrors and coexists with our own.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

Neil Gaiman does a remarkable job with the narration, but there is truly untimely and obnoxious music and echoing voice effects that take me right out of the story. I ended up buying the written text and just reading this book because it got on my last nerve.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It's a rather dark novel on the whole and yet I did laugh out loud on a couple of occasions. Humor is always more potent when cast amidst a somber tale and Gaiman is a master when it comes to intertwining the two.

Any additional comments?

Worth a read, listen if you don't mind the obnoxious noises.

Like a Dark Fairytale

it is always a joy to hear an author read his own work. This was an exceptionally fine example. Misters Coope and Vandermeer will remain among my favorite characters for a long time

great steam punk kind of fantasy!

loved it- main characters were sympathetic, complex, and interesting, villains creepy, and somehow there was plenty of humour too- and fantastic reading!

A fun visit to another place

Once you get into it, it's a fun fantasy to dive into. Slow start, but a great second half

Annoying music in the narration detracted from an otherwise good book

The book itself was very good. And the author did an excellent job with the narration. However the music edited into the narration between chapters was painfully annoying.
