Publisher's summary

A man must survive the zombie apocalypse armed with only a shotgun, a Samurai bat, and the will to live among the unliving in this horror series debut.

It’s been two years since civilization ended in an unstoppable wave of chaos and blood. Now, former house painter Augustus “Gus” Berry lives a day-to-day existence of waking up, getting drunk, and preparing for the inevitable moment when “they” will come up the side of his mountain and penetrate his fortress.

Living on the outskirts of Annapolis, Gus goes scavenging for whatever supplies remain in the undead suburbia below. Every time he descends the mountain could be his last. But when Gus encounters another survivor, he soon realizes the zombie horde may not be the greatest threat he faces . . .

Great read for Zombie lovers

Where does Mountain Man rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

top 5 for sure

What did you like best about this story?

This book brings the gore, it doesn't skimp on the details so it paints a very clear picture, but it isn't too excessive. Also, Gus' character is well written, he reads like a real person dealing with realistic issues in a way an average joe would, without being too predictable. The chapters aren't too long and the story progresses quickly, Mountain Man is an effortless read.

Which scene was your favorite?

Scott's Bathroom scene. I like to read before bed, but I could not put it down, I was in a full panic it was so intense. When it did finally die down a bit, I still couldn't stop thinking about it. I had to go watch TV so that I could get my mind off of it and go to sleep with out having horrible zombie nightmares. Which is amazing!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

There were several, Gus is very relatable.

Any additional comments?

This book is perfect for anyone who is in withdrawals for "The Walking Dead"!

A Good Listen

Would you consider the audio edition of Mountain Man to be better than the print version?

I have not read the print addition.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Mountain Man?

Scott, the second protagonist in the story, is trapped in a second story bathroom in a zombie infested house. He is in the bathtub. He is injured. He has one bullet left and he knows that he will be found by the hoard below. I will not tell what happens, but I was glued to my headphones listening to the story unravel.

Which scene was your favorite?

At one point in the story (I won't tell which) Gus is in a gun fight. He has been badly injured and he is very drunk. (Don't judge-he has lived through a zombie apocalypse.) As he kills his foes, "Uncle Jack" and "Captain Morgan", offer him tips and encouragement. I was moved by the loneliness and courage of Gus. It was a tense but also very funny passage.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I did listen to this book in one sitting.

Any additional comments?

Read "The Hospital" first. Something happens to Gus there that is alluded to several times in this audiobook. I would also like to mention that the narrator was excellent. He nailed this audio version of the book. If you are a fan of zombie literature (can we call it literature?!) then I think you will like Gus and Scott's story. There is an interesting tale to be heard here.

Awesome characters, awesome story

This series was my first experience with Audible books. I always thought I needed to hold the book in my hand in order to enjoy it, but the combination of Keith C. Blackmore’s characters and RC Bray bringing the story to life was a knockout combination. Whenever I’m in need of something to listen to, I start this series over and listen again! I keep finding little things that I missed the first time...or two. I highly recommend it- but try to get the whole series at once because the withdrawal when you finish one is rough!

hooked me like only Stephen king has done before

Firstly, R.C. Bray is a phenomenal narrator. Secondly, the story is gripping--keeping my attention like only the master has been able to do --definitely listening to more of Blackmore's work!!

Real people in an unreal situation

What did you like best about this story?

The friendship between the two men was so real. The zombie story was almost an aside. This drew me into the story in a way I seldom am.

Couldn't put it down!

I don't care what anyone says, Zombies never get old. I consume A LOT of zombie media. video games, movies, shows, books. I even have a realistic looking zombie bite tattoo on my neck....
This was one of the freshest takes on the genre I've read in a while. Gus is such an awesome and realistic feeling character. you feel his loneliness and seclusion, you feel his fear and his good nature.
Gus is a kind and good man. Then Scott shows up and their bromance is adorable. Looking forward to the rest of this series.
