Publisher's summary

Mother, wife, private investigator... vampire. Six years ago, federal agent Samantha Moon was the perfect wife and mother, your typical soccer mom with the minivan and suburban home. Then the unthinkable happens, an attack that changes her life forever. And forever is a very long time for a vampire.

Now the world at large thinks Samantha has developed a rare skin disease, a disease which forces her to quit her day job and stay out of the light of the sun. Now working the night shift as a private investigator, Samantha is hired by Kingsley Fulcrum to investigate the murder attempt on his life, a horrific scene captured on TV and seen around the country. But as the case unfolds, Samantha discovers Kingsley isn't exactly what he appears to be; after all, there is a reason why he survived five shots to the head.

Vampire and a soccer Mom!!! Love this series!!!

Purchased the first one, loved it so much listened to the next 5.5 all in a row! Ok, I must confess that four were bought on sale, which for their length made them a better value. The only thing that keeps my rating from a 5 is that they are sooo short!! This is a series is that should be listened to in order!
Sam is a Mom, private detective, vampire, & wife in about that order. Who knew a vampire could be a great Mom! I really enjoy how Sam, her family, and friend’s characters develop. J.R. Rain writes great stories! If you like a lot of sex and violence this series may not be for you. As a Mom I related to Sam. Dina Pearlman is a wonderful narrator! Dina helps make Sam believable. J.R. is going on my favorite author list and I will be purchasing his next book, on sale or not!

Not all vampires are the bad guys

Current time. People don't believe in vampires or werewolves. Especially cops.
But 6 years ago, Samantha Moon was bitten and turned. Upside down. Had to leave her job as an investigator for HUD, and became a PI working from home. Now she loses her husband and 2 children. And she gains a werewolf/lawyer, a nosy cop, and has an online friend. Oh, and she learns to shapeshift and fly.
Still more sad than not. But engaging, and leaves you wanting to hunt up the next in the series.
Dina Pearlman is a good fit in her performance as narrator in this first person account. She gives further depth to each of the characters, including the mental mutterings.
Purchased on the cheap as Whispersync through BookGorilla.

Moonlit Mayhem and Dusky Domesticity

Samantha Moon was once your average wife, mother and employee before an attack leads her to an immortal, cold and nighttime existence.

Parlaying her prior investigative work with a federal agency into a small but steady private investigation concern, Samantha grapples with the everyday and extraordinary.

While the story is interesting and one can be totally engaged with her crime solving method, the real pathos is the havoc wreaked on a marriage when one half of the couple no longer breathes.

I was incensed by the vitriol and bitterness of Sam's husband. I completely understand that he got a heavy load to carry. I'm sure that his doubt plagued him, but what happened to loving in sickness and health until death do you part?!? It seemed to me that he used her unfortunate reality to justify his own agenda, in the process harming the stability of his family and sanctity of his marriage.

The narrator evokes a sarcastic realism that I found to be refreshingly sanguine. There were times I saw an image that didn't quite match the story and I'll be looking to other installments to assess if that changes.

Overall, a strong start to a compelling series. I look forward to the next story!

I really wanted to like this

It just doesn't work for me. Depressing and slow....I did like the characters just thought they were wasted with this plot.

However the narrator did a nice job.

entertaining paranormal/supernatural story

I enjoyed this book and listened to it on my way to and from work. the narrator was good. some of her voices were strange for certain characters, but was overall good. hopefully there is more romance in the other books. I will be purchasing the second book in the series on audible

Original, YA Literature for Adults

This story has me mixed up. The pros:

-Really original twist, with it being a mom
-Some different takes on being a vampire as well as just the mom angle
-I liked the mystery/her life balance. I felt like the pace was good, I was never bored.
-It was well written.
-Good narration

What has me not loving it:
-She comments about every male, seemingly all of them are hot with great butts
-The romance felt YA to me. Everything is so adult and mature with her being a mom and ex federal agent, and then BAM, cheesy and fast love. I didn't believe it, and in my opinion, it cheapened the otherwise good writing.

For those that care, there are a couple F bombs, and a rape attempt. It was the least scary that type of scene could be, but it may still bother some people sensitive to that. She has a couple sex dreams, that are detailed enough I'd be wary of my child reading it, but overall I'd rate the book on level with what you'd find in a PG-13 movie.

It was interesting enough I kept going, despite some lines that made me roll my eyes. I'd recommend it for YA readers who are adults and not interested in the teen clique drama of traditional YA books.
