Publisher's summary

Agent Franks of the U.S. Monster Control Bureau is a man of many parts - parts from other people, that is. Franks is nearly seven feet tall and all muscle. He's nearly indestructible. Plus he’s animated by a powerful alchemical substance and inhabited by a super-intelligent spirit more ancient than humanity itself. Good thing he’s on our side. More or less.

Sworn to serve and protect the United States of America from all monsters by one of the country’s founding fathers, Franks has only one condition to the agreement: No matter what the government learns of him, no matter what is discovered concerning his odd physiology or the alchemy behind the elixir that made him, the government is never, ever allowed to try and make more like him. Such is absolutely forbidden and should the powers-that-be do so, then the agreement is null and void.

Project Nemesis: in a secret location, using sophisticated technology and advanced genetic engineering, the director of the very agency Franks works for is making more like him. And the director is not content with making one. Nope, he’s making 13. Now all bets are off, and Hell hath no fury like a monster betrayed. Particularly if that monster happens to be an undying killing machine capable of taking out vampires and werewolves with one hand tied behind his back.

Franx’ story

Amazing… imaginative. Humanizing… Beautiful and wonderfully well-written. I loved the narrator, as well. I thoroughly enjoyed this tale.

Another Winner

If you've been following the MHI story since book 1 you either already have this or are considering getting it. In a nutshell: You want this.

This story, as mentioned in other reviews, is told from the perspective of Agent Franks. Who has been a huge (no pun intended) enigma since the beginning. But here, you find out what he is, why he is, and ultimately who he is.

Its logical to make a comparison to Monster Hunter Alpha as it is focused on an individual perspective other than Owen Pitt. However it is also a very different type of story because of the nature of the "beast". And you get the usual gun/weapons "porn" that Correia does so well, and weaves into his worlds.

I won't give away the plot, but you will be re acquainted with familiar faces, and there are some welcome cameo's from MHI personnel. Be prepared for some very shocking twists that clearly set up future volumes.

I really enjoy this series. I highly recommend it. And I can't imagine why this isn't a series on HBO or a series of movies.

Enjoyed every minute... as good as the 1st volume

If you thought by now you knew everything there is to know about forces of evil, think again. Dont't know how he does it, but Correia added again the whole new dimension to his characters and the dark side. Franks was always quite a character, but that was all nothing compared to the depth we know him after this book. Oliver Wyman outdid himself too. This book was such a joy to listen.

Great follow up

If you are a fan of the series you would have grown to (love) Franks & this book is his big story! And I mean big...bigger bad guys, bigger guns, bigger battles & bigger risks to all the characters.

I love the way the author can change tone in his books & tell the story from the characters perspective - Mr Correia doesn't disappoint.

If you are new to MHI I would urge you to start at the beginning...much more fun!

Oh, and the book has gnomes...too damn cool!

Best MHI yet.

I simply adore how no character, no matter how quickly introduced, is ever forgotten by Mr. Correia. They return with increased depth, characterization, and important parts to play, so that even if you hated and now love them, or just forever love to hate them, you can't wait to hear from them all again!
