Editorial reviews

Why we think it's Essential - Quick, who directed The Evil Dead? What action hero starred in The Blob? Which movie studio became synonymous with horror for producing Frankenstein and The Wolf Man? If you can answer these questions correctly, you'll likely be thrilled with Monster Hunter International. B-movie aficionados know there's a fine line between gleefully gory camp and flat-out dross. Not to worry, Monster Hunter International knows the line. Oliver Wyman brings just the right amount of bombastic, smirking swagger to this story of big guns, big action, and a heck of a lot of monsters. —Michael

Publisher's summary

Five days after Owen Zastava Pitt pushed his insufferable boss out of a 14th story window, he woke up in the hospital with a scarred face, an unbelievable memory, and a job offer.

It turns out that monsters are real. All the things from myth, legend, and B-movies are out there, waiting in the shadows. Officially secret, some of them are evil, and some are just hungry. On the other side are the people who kill monsters for a living. Monster Hunter International is the premier eradication company in the business. And now Owen is their newest recruit.

It's actually a pretty sweet gig, except for one little problem. An ancient entity known as the Cursed One has returned to settle a centuries-old vendetta. Should the Cursed One succeed, it means the end of the world, and MHI is the only thing standing in his way.

With the clock ticking towards Armageddon, Owen finds himself trapped between legions of undead minions, belligerent federal agents, a cryptic ghost who has taken up residence inside his head, and the cursed family of the woman he loves. Business is good.... Welcome to Monster Hunter International.

Great Story

I really enjoy this and eagerly look forward to reading the rest of his books. The narrator was a bit meh but over all the performance was good.

Compelling and amusing...

If you could sum up Monster Hunter International in three words, what would they be?

Brash, funny, imaginative

Who was your favorite character and why?

Owen Pitt. He typifies the general human tendencies to rash judgment, irrational passionate response, and stupified amazement at the discovery of personal faults.

What about Oliver Wyman’s performance did you like?

I really liked the continuity of the character voices that he chose. Some narrators cannot keep it together from dialogue to dialogue and monologue to monologue, probably forgetting the voices they've chosen for individual characters. Mr. Wyman makes the listener's time easy by keeping it clear whose voice is used at any given time.

A slow start, but great action novel

The slow start is due to the need to set up all of the background for the important characters. It did seem to drag on a bit at times in the first half.

But the second half more than makes up for the slow spots. And we have some great characters to follow through a series.

All of the voices he uses.

Awesome narration!

I listened to the sample of this story on Audible and enjoyed Oliver Wyman's delivery so much that I bought the book. Although not my normal reading fare, Monster Hunter International proved to be a more than worthy listening experience. Larry Correia provided a fascinating story with plenty of twists and turns, some easily foreseen and others more surprising. In the book he takes the listener (or reader) into an action packed world of the "monster hunters" as well as a bit of romance and plenty of humble heroism. Oliver Wyman did a fantastic job of delivering the story in an engaging and dramatic manner. He was consistent, and impressive, in his distinctive voices for each character. And his acting ability was clearly reflected in this book. I intend to find other books narrated by him and plan on listening to many in the days to come. Of course, I will be listening to the sequel to Monster Hunters International first!

Exciting, fun, adult ride!

This is an awesome series! If your looking for an excellent start to a great story, you've found it here! The narrator is amazing, sometimes it seems like a different person speaking, he's so good - and he nails each characters personality perfectly. Great start to a great series, this book has likable characters that you learn more about as the series progresses. You care about them and want to know more, which, to me, is what a good story is all about.

Larry Corriera wears what he loves on his sleeve.

An entertainingly violent love letter to monster movies and firearms, Monster Hunter International is perfect for horror fans and gun enthusiasts. the many fights against the forces of evil are exercises in excessive strength and toughness from the monsters being met with even more over the top firepower. seperate from the fighting and guns is a pretty good story about a man getting caught up in a plot to destroy the universe, with plenty of suspense as plans thousands of years in the making unfold.

really?

I didn't make it past the first chapter. don't waste your time if you don't like a super bad ass character and overly descriptive clichés.
not for me.

edit: I was implored to give it another try.

I am glad I stuck it out. fast paced brutal action.
highly recommend.
