Editorial reviews

Why we think it's Essential - Quick, who directed The Evil Dead? What action hero starred in The Blob? Which movie studio became synonymous with horror for producing Frankenstein and The Wolf Man? If you can answer these questions correctly, you'll likely be thrilled with Monster Hunter International. B-movie aficionados know there's a fine line between gleefully gory camp and flat-out dross. Not to worry, Monster Hunter International knows the line. Oliver Wyman brings just the right amount of bombastic, smirking swagger to this story of big guns, big action, and a heck of a lot of monsters. —Michael

Publisher's summary

Five days after Owen Zastava Pitt pushed his insufferable boss out of a 14th story window, he woke up in the hospital with a scarred face, an unbelievable memory, and a job offer.

It turns out that monsters are real. All the things from myth, legend, and B-movies are out there, waiting in the shadows. Officially secret, some of them are evil, and some are just hungry. On the other side are the people who kill monsters for a living. Monster Hunter International is the premier eradication company in the business. And now Owen is their newest recruit.

It's actually a pretty sweet gig, except for one little problem. An ancient entity known as the Cursed One has returned to settle a centuries-old vendetta. Should the Cursed One succeed, it means the end of the world, and MHI is the only thing standing in his way.

With the clock ticking towards Armageddon, Owen finds himself trapped between legions of undead minions, belligerent federal agents, a cryptic ghost who has taken up residence inside his head, and the cursed family of the woman he loves. Business is good.... Welcome to Monster Hunter International.

Absolutely outstanding!

I loved it. It was hard to put down. It was like watching an Action/Comedy/Romance/Horror movie. I can't wait to listen to the next one.

I agree!! A terrific book.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I loved this book for many reasons. For all the action scenes, for all the fighting and mayhem, for all the passionate emotions, Larry Correia avoids the cheap and easy route of filling the book with swearing and instead is articulate enough to explain frustration, fear, etc. That alone raises it above a lot of contemporary books.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I liked all the characters except the boyfriend, who was about the only cookie-cutter two dimensional character in the book. The rest remind me of my friends; they all have flaws, backgrounds, ugly secrets, wrinkles and failures.

What does Oliver Wyman bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

His voice is extremely flexible, and he carried a variety of accents without making them a parody of a stereotype. He knows enough about grammar that he knows when to pause, how to express emotions through tone of voice, and he maintained pace throughout.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

There were several. Owen Z Pitt has to continually confront his demons (literally and figuratively) and is surprised each time. I like that a lot.

One of the best series I have read in years!

Larry Correia has become one of my favorite writers because of his Monster Hunter International and Warbound series. I can't recommend them highly enough. Great characters, good pacing, interesting storylines, there's just so much to enjoy. The narrators, Oliver Wyman for MHI and Bronson Pinchot for Warbound, are really excellent and make the series come alive.

Oliver Wyman is an amazing reader

When it comes to audio books there is so much on the reading performer and Oliver Wyman is an amazing reader.

The book is very entertaining as well although using a lot of cliches but that didn't prevent it from being an action packed an addictive.

One of the best in its genre

An excellent listen filled with great characters that are expertly voiced by Mr. Oliver Wyman who delivers the right amount of gravitas, humour and various inflections to give life to myriad cast of both men and women. The story is rich and well-thought out with no plot holes or inconsistencies that I could think of and is one of those rare books that balances fantastical, over-the-top situations and realities with both seriousness as well as a healthy dose of excellent and well-placed humour in order to make it both memorable and highly enjoyable.
I also like how Mr. Correia has created strong female characters among the supporting cast that aren't cliched or objectifying as I've come across several sci-fi books where that isn't the case which detracts from an otherwise good listen.
The one slight criticism that I have is that you'll find that the character of agent Franks isn't completely established as his voice and presence grow in the subsequent (excellent) books to what it ultimately becomes. I say this because he becomes quite important from the second book onwards and it looks like the author hadn't yet mapped out his role within the series and only really establishes it after the first book, which is slightly unfortunate.
This series is also one of the rare few that I am able to read/listen to back to back and I can't recommend all 5 books highly enough. Worth every penny and highly addictive as I've listened to the first 4 books twice each now.

Forced Romance

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I would say that this was an overall enjoyable. I will be continuing to read the series.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The most interesting thing about the story was a fresh take on an over done theme. With most of the protagonist not having any overt supernatural powers and were forced to fight with mortal weapons.

What I liked least was a forced and underwhelming romantic plot. Made little sense to me and it seemed they seemed to love each other after spending very little time together.

What about Oliver Wyman’s performance did you like?

Overall very good. Got a little silly doing some of the supernatural voices however.

Could you see Monster Hunter International being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

I think that idea would be very good.

Any additional comments?

none

Cliche but fun. 7/10

Let's be real here. This is masturbatory writing about a Mary Sue that just keeps on getting more and more unrealistic. That's not to say it isn't fun, or that I won't read more. In fact, I've already bought the second one.

It is urban fantasy, anything seems to go in this genre. if you enjoy gun fights and hard talk, this is definitely the urban fantasy for you. 7/10

A Popcorn Movie, Narrated Very Slowly

Is there anything you would change about this book?

This book is completely formulaic, completely predictable, and solidly enjoyable. The villains are such complete caricatures, and they often act in completely stupid and inexplicable ways.

What was most disappointing about Larry Correia’s story?

The complete and utter lack of surprises, and an ending you see from a mile away. It's not like I was in this for a compelling, edge of my seat thriller, but there are long sections of exposition that only serve to lengthen the book.

How could the performance have been better?

The narrator's slow ponderous voice was extremely tedious. He dredged out the material, and seemed to only be able to do one female voice, and about three different male voices.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Definitely! This would make a fantastic action movie. With loving close ups of the guns instead of tedious descriptions of them.
