On his side, he's got a few shambling corpses, an inept thief, and a powerful death wish. But he's up against tough odds: angry mobs of adventurers, a body falling apart at the seams and a team of programmers racing a deadline to hammer out the last few bugs in their AI.

Mogworld is a comic fantasy novel in the tradition of Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett, and is the debut novel from video-game icon Yahtzee Croshaw (Zero Punctuation).

What the Critics Say

"The first legitimate breakout hit from the gaming community in recent memory" (Boing Boing)

"Yahtzee consistently makes me laugh, and even though I dig computer and electronic games, he has cross-genre appeal to anyone who enjoys a sharp wit, unique sense of humor, and plenty of originality - not purely gaming fans" (The Future Buzz)

I listen to books when I'm at work or doing chores. I prefer history and fantasy. My favorite audio book is Going Postal by Terry Pratchett.

    "Yahtzee learns to enunciate"

I bought this for the same reason almost every one else purchased it for, I'm a fan of Zero Punctuation. On his blog, Yahtzee wrote that it was really hard to learn to speak slowly again and if you listen to the audio sample you can tell. The narration early on is stilted, as if he's trying to compensate. Likewise, the humor in the beginning is strained and trying too hard. He tends to reuse and abuse his metaphors, and over use words such as "insanely" and "suddenly". Sadly, these and other technical problems appear throughout the book.

However, if you love Yahtzee and are prepared to be both patient and forgiving, this book will reward you in the end. And by patient I mean you need to get through at least the first 3 hours. By that time, Yahtzee's voice has warmed up and the story picks up enough to let the jokes occur more naturally. The main character is endearing and the story amusing and involving. Yahtzee does a good necromancer voice too, though my favorite voice was Slippery John. The ending was appropriately poignant.

This book is better than other first novels by game designers (it made me think of Johannes Cabal: Necromancer). Yahtzee hasn't ascended to the pantheon with Pratchett and Douglas Adams but I will pick up his other book and hope for more author narrated audio books from him in the future.

"Listened to this twice in a row - lotsa fun!"

The premise is great - a former magic college student killed by a rival warrior university is raised 60 years later to be the undead minion of an evil Necromancer. Turns out the Necromancer is a great boss and the new walking corpse, Jim, comes to enjoy working in the Doom Fortress...until it's destroyed, with Jim and two other minions the only ones to escape.

    Thus begins their quest.

The cast of characters, to me, were un-freaking-believably entertaining. I even loved the villains.

Also, the narrator was really something. At first, I was a little disconcerted since he so unconventional compared to others on audible. But after a few chapters, I found he was perfectly suited to bring to life the various characters. Then I discovered the narrator is also the author, so of course he had things well in hand - just took some getting used to.

    Highly recommended

    "Outstanding!"

I have been a big fan of Yahtzee's game reviews for several years so when I saw he narrated the book himself I had to buy it.

He did not disappoint. The story was better than I expected it to be. I am more of a Sci-Fi fan than Fantasy but I found this book very enjoyable.

I hope to see more books and narration from Yahtzee in the future.

"Better than I could have hoped for"

As a fan of Zero Punctuation, I went into Mogworld thinking I knew what to expect: a parody full of whip-sharp language and colorful similes. What I didn't expect was the honestly brilliant metanarritive about how video games are made, played, and perceived, woven into an unusual but engaging adventure story. The plot was refreshingly original, the characters were distinct and memorable, and the world felt right, just familiar enough to me, as someone who's played a lot of sword and sorcery RPGs. It was definitely the right choice to have Yahtzee narrate the story, because he imbues it with so much personality. Overall, a joy to listen to. Five stars.

Laugh mostly. Got a little tedious near the end.

    "Absolutely"

Hands down, this is the funniest book I have ever had the pleasure to read or listen to.

I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the fantasy genre. Not only did I enjoy it, this is the only book to my memory which made me actually laugh. And when I say laugh, I don't just mean a dry chuckle or smirk - I am referring to a big full belly laugh.

With this book Mr Croshaw has made myself a fan of his work.

"Fun but should have used a different narrator."

The story was good, and the humor was much like the Diskworld series. Croshaw has a long way to go to reach Pratchett status.

As a narrator Croshaw sounded like he was speaking through his nose. At times I could have sworn that I could her him blowing smoke after inhaling from a cigarette.

"Fantastic story and narration after first hour."

Love zero punctuation, and you may feel a little short changed if you wanted a 13 hour equivalent. You instead get a 12 hour roller coaster of amazing one liners and set pieces, after the slow scene setting starting hour.

First 20 minutes is not terribly interesting while setting the scene, Jim is not particularly likeable for first 40 ish. After that you get introduced to more characters and the dynamic of their relationships and the crazy world fits perfectly.

Odd hearing Yahtzee do the different accents and genders,, but he gets it spot on and listening to the 10 ish main characters is great fun.

Very intelligently pieced together fantasy story meets real mmo gaming experience. Had to pull my van over listening to a scene with Mr. Wonderful ( won't spoil it) or end up rear ending someone in fits of laughter.

"Interesting enough story and plenty for the gamers"

Having followed Yahtzee for a little while through his game reviews i was quite curious to see how his humor would translate through into a novel. I'm pleased to say that it does, mostly. Yahtzee himself narrates which really does help a lot as I'm not overly sure it would have worked as well had anyone else done so.

All the characters are interesting if nothing else, and the interaction between all the 'mains' is really great and the side characters that pop up are always entertaining.

I think the biggest let down was the story itself. I cant help but feel i might have enjoy the story that could have been, more then the story i got. I don't really want to spoil anything, but i could have quite happy stayed in Act 1 throughout. But alas that wasn't the story he was telling.

My Girlfriend and i are both gamers and really did enjoy the references along the way, but I'm not sure how well that would translate to a non gamer.

Bought the book because I knew Yahtzee from Zero Punctuation, he mantains the type of humor, and he being the narrator was the only reason i bought the audiobook(ive never been fond of audiobooks).

Very funny... thou it's quite strange to walk down the street laughing at what people seem to think is funy music.

Then you'll probably like this! Yahtzee Croshaw voices his own novel about a young mage who generally has a terrible time of life. I won't include any spoilers but it's not ground-breaking stuff with regards to the storyline but it's an enjoyable listen and I'm looking forward to spending my hard-earned credits on his next one which I assume he's currently narrating his way through!

    More please Yahtzee :)

"Excellent book from Yahtzee; didn't expect!"
Would you listen to Mogworld again? Why?

I've listened to Mogworld three times so far, and each time has been great. Yahtzee manages build his humour and world well, as well as integrating it with an interest, engaging story.

What did you like best about this story?

The best thing about Mogworld is the lampooning of both MMORPG tropes, media tropes in general, and the silliness of the world to some level.

What about Yahtzee Croshaw’s performance did you like?

Yahtzee actually managed to split out his characters well - not perfectly, but I always knew which character was talking, and he managed to bring the emotions out.

    Any additional comments?

I believe most tech-heads and gamers will enjoy this book very much; might actually get his next book (Jam) on audiobook even though I have the paperback when audible get it out.

"A little obvious in places but beautifully written"

I very much enjoyed this book... not for the story which was good but a little pedestrian but for the writing which had a lovely humour to it delivered in a deadpan style and the truly superb narration - which I had not realised until now was done by the author. I am a big fan of authors reading their own work as you get what the writer intended and the stories are closer to the images in the author's mind. I would cheerfully buy another book by the same author.

    "Perfectly voiced wit"

Jim just wants to die and not be an undead minion, but he can't even get that much right. In fact, at every turn, even as his world falls apart around him, he seems to fail more profoundly in his task and he's not happy about it. And then there's Meryl, Jim's female lead, she so damnably chipper all the time. As if his life couldn't get any worse.

This book is a wonderful demonstration of Ben Yahtzee Croshaw mastery of acerbic wit, sarcasm and irony. It is perfectly voiced by the author. It is awesome. You should read it.

A really interesting premise, it kept me engaged the whole way through and is very well written. The fact that Yahtzee both wrote and narrates this improves this no end, as the inflection in his narration is spot on. Definitely worthy of a listen. An original idea that I emencely enjoied listening to, the kind of audio book that you can't stop listening to. I can't praise it highly enough.

"Very funny book with a unique perspective"

When playing computer games, no one ever gives a second thought about the hordes of zombies, orcs or un-specified-istanis they are killing.

This book does exactly that - an insight into what they're all up to when you're not charging around with a sword... Except it's very well written, extremely funny, in a dry and witty way, and has a couple of very good twists in the tale!

Yatzhee's style of writing contains a lot of the dry, sarcastic humour from his well known "zero punctuation" game reviews, but his reading is slightly slower - this is by no means a bad thing. The length of the audiobook gives him time to develop the characters from the undead minions that start out as into... Well... More rounded undead minions I guess... But the story is good fun. I'd have no hesitation in recommending this to you!
