"My aunt, Queen Andais, will have it no other way. And so I am virtually a prisoner in fairie - trapped here with some of the realm's most beautiful men to serve as my bodyguards...and my lovers. For I am compelled to conceive a child: an heir to succeed me on the throne.
"Yet after months of amazing sex with my consorts, there is still no baby. And no baby means no throne. The only certainty is death at the hands of my cousin Cel, or his followers, if I fail to conceive.
"Now Mistral, Queen Andais' new captain of the guard, has come to my bed - defying her and risking her terrible wrath in doing so. But even she will hesitate to punish him in jealous rage, because our joining has reawakened old magic - mystical power so ancient that no one stands against it and survives, not even my strongest and most favored: my Darkness and my Killing Frost. Not even Mistral himself, my Storm Lord. But because Mistral has helped to bring this magic forth, he may live another day.
"If I can reclaim control of the fey power that once was, there may be hope for me and my reign in fairie. I might yet quell the dark schemes and subterfuges surrounding me. Though shadows of obsession and conspiracy gather, I may survive."

"Lots of earth-shattering, supernatural sex and a rousing climactic battle will have Hamilton's fans panting for more." (Publishers Weekly)
Another great story. I really love the way these characters are developing slowly as the series progresses. Everyone, especially Frost and Gaylan are getting much better at their initial weaknesses. The sex is much too drawn out and tends to stall the story from moving forward. That's ok though. I can get past the disk-long orgies because the story line is otherwise great. The characters are really good too. I would love it if the narrator would stick with pronouncing the characters names in a consistent way. Doyle was "Doyle" in books one and two, "Dole" in books three, back to "Doyle" in book four, and now back to Dole. I realize the pronunciation guide says that his name is pronounced "Dole", but stick with the same darned name! It's distracting, and quite frankly disrespectful to the author. Not to mention poor Darkness! I wish he'd pop out of the story with Mortal Dread and give the narrator a little slice... :)
I love the story but Laural Merlington flubs up the pronunciation again!! She must of recorded books 3 and 5 together because they have same weird pronunciations of characters, places and key story line components. I'm hoping the book 6 is goes back to how she read in books 1, 2 and 4.
Inconsistent pronunciation from book to book in the series.
Mistral was my favorite lover of Princess Merry, the series is good , get all 8 or you'll be lost, but it well worth it. Lots of lust, fighting, deciete, betrayal and love..
The entire series is steamy and exotic. If you think reading the books are risque, listening doubles your pleasure!
That's about all you get out of this book. Not much of a plot, just sex. So if that's what you like or are looking for, this book has lots of it. Just about the whole first three chapters are nothing but! After that, yes the story gets good! I love her books and HATE having to give such a bad review but you know that's not all that needs to be in a book. Frankly, I could do without all that but that's just my opinion. If you can get past the first three chapters then you will probably like this book.
I really like the plot to Hamilton's book however as I said in last review, the sexual descrpitions are getting to be boring. The first 2 hours of this book was between Merry (main character) and Mistral--regardless, I will continue to listen as the author does keep the listeners attention.
Love literature but I am strictly an audiobook man. Actor, Model, Singer, V.O., Performer, Emcee/Host, Sports Official
I think it is really cool that she is bringing back the powers of the Sithen and within the Sidhe lords themselves. But the fairy mound is awesome as a presence and character. Wish some of the characters launched on us in groups would have some more development I can't keep them all straight easily without something to ground them.
Fan-fucking-tastic, literally! Can't wait for book 6 when I get to find out what happens next between the two heirs to the darkling throne.
Merry is definitely coming into her own. However, on the way, she is bringing her men along for the ride. There are major changes happening within the Unseelie city and the Sluagh. Merry is touched by the Goddess and her men are being touched by the consort. Faery is changing and she is leaving again for sanctuary. Cael is loose and free and he's more insane than he was.
