Mission | [Patrick Tilley]

Mission

What would you do if, through an unexpected twist of fate and time, you came face to face with Jesus of Nazareth? In the flesh. A living, breathing, three-dimensional figure with a disconcertingly casual manner. When you had pinched yourself to make sure that you weren't dreaming and found that he was still there, would you turn your back and walk away - or would you try to find out what he was doing so far from home? That was the decision facing Leo Resnick, a smart young Manhattan lawyer, and his girlfriend, Dr Miriam Maxwell.

Publisher's Summary

What would you do if, through an unexpected twist of fate and time, you came face to face with Jesus of Nazareth? In the flesh. A living, breathing, three-dimensional figure with a disconcertingly casual manner. When you had pinched yourself to make sure that you weren't dreaming and found that he was still there, would you turn your back and walk away - or would you try to find out what he was doing so far from home?

That was the decision facing Leo Resnick, a smart young Manhattan lawyer, and his girlfriend, Dr Miriam Maxwell. Mission is Leo's record of his encounter with The Man. If you've ever looked up at the stars and wondered what it all means, this is the audiobook you've been waiting for. Mission is the nearest you'll get to the Secret of the Universe this side of the Apocalypse.

Patrick Tilley spent his formative years in the counties of Northumbria and Cumbria. He studied art at King's College, Durham, and worked as a graphic designer. He began writing episodes for a TV series and went on to become scriptwriter and creative advisor on several major films before writing Fade-Out, his first novel.

"So this is what the bible really means..."
Would you listen to Mission again? Why?

Yes, because the story is very rich, and, I would like to go back to the New Testament (and Old) to check some of the amazing facts, thoughts and concepts

What other book might you compare Mission to and why?

Unlike any other, except perhaps segments of the Bible

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, too deep to listen to at one sitting.

    Any additional comments?

Definitely worth a second or third read.

    "Jesus drops an "F" bomb."
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

This book might be better suited for an audience that does not hold Jesus Christ in the same high regard as I. Listen to this at your own risk.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

The narrator did a fine job. I have no complaints with his performance.

    Any additional comments?

I hate writing bad reviews, especially when I haven't finished listening to an audiobook. However, when I saw that no one else had had written a review for this title, I decided to be the first. Had I read any Audible reviews, I could've saved myself time and money and looked elsewhere for an audiobook appropriate to my tastes.

I made it to the two hour mark with this audiobook before I gave up. In that time, I heard the author take God's name in vain several times, heard Jesus drop the "F' bomb, and heard Jesus explain that he's really a stranded alien from a parallel universe. Further, he rejects the plain teaching of Genesis' creation message, and instead inserts a pre-existing race of beings who lived on the earth before Adam and Eve.

Whether the listener is a young-earth creationist, an old-earth evolutionist, or something in between is irrelevant. The question is what did Jesus believe? Since evolutionary thinking didn't emerge until 1,800 years after his crucifixion, Jesus must have been a creationist. If the author wishes Jesus is to be believable, he must act in character. Sadly, he did not.

I am not easily offended. I have read a thousand paperbacks and listened to a hundred audiobooks. The majority of my reading and listening focuses on horror, fantasy, and science fiction. Having stated that, I can say that it is one thing to hear profanity spoken within the context of a military or horror novel. It is quite another thing entirely to hear the "F" bomb dropped indiscriminately by the Son of God. This is a glaring example of Jesus acting out of character.

I stopped listening at the point Jesus Christ was portrayed to be an alien from another galaxy.

    "An Unexpected Detour"
What did you love best about Mission?

So much of it was simply wonderful. I suppose the time travel paradox. Those always get me.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Leo, His growth emotionally and spiritually were amazing.

    Which scene was your favorite?

Almost the end of the book, where "The Man" says goodbye to Leo

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes. The things that "The Man" said to Leo when he said goodbye to him.

    Any additional comments?

If you are a devout Christian, this book might offend you. I personally think it is a great story. It is a combination of Spirituality, and Science Fiction, and some great historical research. As a matter of fact the research the writer did on this book was outstanding. It is a book that while fiction, is capable of helping you understand a spiritual principle or two. It did for me.

It is worth the time and the credit as well. I loved it!
