Publisher's summary

It has been over a decade since Andrew Keane's Union regiment was mysteriously pulled away from the Civil War and marooned in time on a hostile alien planet. But now it appears as if everything the Lost Regiment has fought and died for has been in vain.

The unrelenting war against the hordes has taken its toll on the fatigued humans, and the Bantag horde's latest siege has broken the Republic's will to fight. Keane resigns his position in the Republic's government when a peace parley is declared. Gathering the remaining veterans of the 35th Maine to his side, he plans a campaign that will take the Lost Regiment into the heart of the Bantag Empire to annihilate their ability to wage war once and for all. The outcome of this suicide mission will decide the fate of the human race on a world far from Earth.

warning

Book 8 is the best and a good ending. The warning Do not buy 9. There is no follow up to the next generation.

The explosive conclusion for a band of brothers...

And so this long series of transplanted fighting men finally comes to an end. Yes, I know there's a ninth book, but that was meant to serve as a start for a new series that went nowhere, so I'm not listening to it. As the war rages on, an attempted assassination on the human's head of state forces Keane and his men to deal with corrupt senators who are willing to pay any price to bring the conflict with the Bantag to an end, even if it means returning to the old cannibalistic status quo. With many pressing Keane to overthrow the new government he's fought so hard to defend, he struggles to find the right path to take; both for himself and the war-weary populace. Meanwhile, the new Bantag leader has struggles of his own trying to determine where this war should go. All this leads to a final confrontation of explosive proportions.

Overall, I really enjoyed this series for the most part. The premise was a unique one when it was written, and has paved the way for similar stories that have come since. That said, there were some minor problems I had with it. For one thing, once you've gone past the fourth book, the formula does begin to get rather repetitive, with the human forces fighting one alien horde after another. Also, while its made clear that the planet is home to several cities of transplanted humans, the author seemed determined to keep the focus on only the Americans, Russians and Romans, with very little attempt at world-building beyond. The story's good, but it could have been greater. Still, I think its a good series worth listening to. If the premise is one you think you'll enjoy, you'll probably like it too. However, if you want a similar story with some more substance to it, listen to the Destroyermen series instead.

A bittersweet ending to a grand story

There honestly isn't any more to say; if you read the whole series, there's no way you won't cry at the end. I recommend this series to all lovers of freedom and those who honor the blood that was shed to earn and preserve it.

Loved it.

I have read the entire series and was looking forward to reading the final chapter on my down time from work rotation. Had to stay longer than anticipated and decided to read via Audible. Great Narrator and even better book.

Was not disappointed, Great Addtion to the Series

Not every book in the series has been a solid addition, but this one stands out and brings to a close the story for the beloved characters. The end is both unexpected and thought provoking. I admire the strength of character Forstchen wrote into his characters and will miss them as book 9 moves on to focus on the children of the characters that this series has followed. Overall I highly recommend the series, though some of the books are not as good as others the series as whole was well written and well narrated.

A very good book and a damn good series

A very good book and a damn good series. I'll read these books again and again. I already miss the characters, having grown fond of so many of them through the authors amazing ability to bring them to life. I look forward to the next phase of the series that picks up years afterwards with "Down to the Sea".
