Publisher's summary

The ravaged continent of Genabackis has given birth to a terrifying new empire: the Pannion Domin. Like a tide of corrupted blood, it seethes across the land, devouring all. In its path stands an uneasy alliance: Onearm’s army and Whiskeyjack’s Bridgeburners alongside their enemies of old - the forces of the Warlord Caladan Brood, Anomander Rake and his Tiste Andii mages, and the Rhivi people of the plains. But ancient undead clans are also gathering; the T’lan Imass have risen. For it would seem something altogether darker and more malign threatens this world. Rumors abound that the Crippled God is now unchained and intent on a terrible revenge. Marking the return of many characters from Gardens of the Moon and introducing a host of remarkable new players, Memories of Ice is both a momentous new chapter in Steven Erikson’s magnificent epic fantasy and a triumph of storytelling.

Powerful and heartbreaking

I’m reading this series for the first time and “Memories of Ice” simply blew me away.
It’s an intense and hellish experience that brought me so much heartache and sorrow. Despite this, there are moments of hope and light that shine through and inspire me to keep on going.

I can’t wait to read the next one! What an incredible series!

Ralph Lister

the narrator was as amazing as the story he told. With brilliant character voices , and familiarity unmatched by any other narrator I've ever heard.

Poor timing

The narrator does not pause long enough between switching plot lines. It makes listening very confusing- especially with how complex this book is.

Would you listen to Memories of Ice again? Why?

Yes I would listen to it again. Mr. Erikson is a true writer. A step above The Wheel of Time series. Some is truly poetic.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Memories of Ice?

Kroppers (sp?) soliloquies are Shakespearean with a modern twist.

Best book ever written or ever will be written.

Seriously, of all the books I've consumed by now, none of them get anywhere close to what this book has done for engaging plot, amazing characters and incredible world building.

It didn't stumble once nor could I find a single flaw in its delivery.

I actually ended up reading this via E-book and had the audiobook from audible going at the same time to read along to. Because it's so dense, this was the best way I found to be able to consume this epic story. I could step away audiobook only for the less intense moments and sit down to read along when parts started moving around rapidly.

Weirdly for being book 3 in the series, you can skip book 2 entirely and maybe get to book 2 later if you weren't liking the jumping around. Book 2 had its own story going on at the same time and on a different continent that had very little impact on what was going on here. This is a direct sequal to book 1.

You spend so much time with these characters, and at this point 3 books in, the writing style got a lot easier and being able to pick out what is what and who is who is now effortless. I used a guide though occasionally that I found on reddit that really helped. There's this PDF guide you can find made by a fan on the malazan subreddit that is fairly easy to find if you look for it. The guide helped a lot through scene changes as I found the extra assist of maps and faces of characters to be a fun way to track all the moving parts.

I got so hooked on all these characters and found it so easy to dive into their own personal stories through this situation.

The battle scenes, really the entire book, are so detailed that I was just entranced watching this all play out in my head.

Just wow. I seriously think books are ruined for me as ill never find an author this good ever again. Luckily there is a lot of books in the world and I'm now dedicated to get through them all eventually if it means I can keep experiencing this kind of adventure.
