Publisher's summary

The Ankh-Morpork Post Office is running like...well, not at all like a government office. The mail is delivered promptly; meetings start and end on time; five out of six letters relegated to the Blind Letter Office ultimately wend their way to the correct addresses. Postmaster General Moist von Lipwig, former arch-swindler and confidence man, has exceeded all expectations: including his own. So it's somewhat disconcerting when Lord Vetinari summons Moist to the palace and asks, "Tell me, Mr. Lipwig, would you like to make some real money?"

Vetinari isn't talking about wages, of course. He's referring, rather, to the Royal Mint of Ankh-Morpork, a venerable institution that has run for centuries on the hereditary employment of the Men of the Sheds and their loyal outworkers, who do make money in their spare time. Unfortunately, it costs more than a penny to make a penny, so the whole process seems somewhat counterintuitive.

Next door, at the Royal Bank, the Glooper, an "analogy machine", has scientifically established that one never has quite as much money at the end of the week as one thinks one should, and the bank's chairman, one elderly Topsy (née Turvy) Lavish, keeps two loaded crossbows at her desk. Oh, and the chief clerk is probably a vampire.

But before Moist has time to fully consider Vetinari's question, fate answers it for him. Now he's not only making money, but enemies too; he's got to spring a prisoner from jail, break into his own bank vault, stop the new manager from licking his face, and, above all, find out where all the gold has gone: otherwise, his life in banking, while very exciting, is going to be really, really short.

Fun Listen

If you could sum up Making Money: Discworld #31 in three words, what would they be?

Funny, imagnative, creative

What was one of the most memorable moments of Making Money: Discworld #31?

Oh when all the plot lines come together.

What does Stephen Briggs bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Stephen Briggs has built a community of characters that I instantly recognized and enjoy amoung the many Diskworld volumes. He brings the series to life.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I had to many chuckles to hone in on any single one.

Any additional comments?

I just love these books they speed on by and make my long drives often not long enough! The talent of both writer and reader are at the top of my list.

Loved it - but...

I own almost all of the first 25 Discworld audiobooks and I much prefer them without the annoying musical interludes. I also do not appreciate the assumption that I have children that I would want to buy audiobooks for or being advertised to on a product that I have bought. Apart from that - great story and the narrator is in a league of his own, amazing!

Loving this series!

Not usually a fan of fantasy, but Terry Prachett's mix of absurdist action/drama monty pythonesque comedy and biting satire makes Discworld an absolute riot!

Funny story

The second of the Moist Von Liptwig series. In Ank-Morpork a dog can be chairman of a bank. And an ancient civilization of Golams are found.

the book is great, the story is fun, the voice actor is great. The chapter bumper music is annoying.

Starts Slow but picks up near the mid point

As someone who loved going postal I was really looking forward to this. Luckily it was not a complete dissapointment, but it's pretty far from going postal. my primary complaint is that it has a very slow, boring start. It does not help that beats of the first book's opening are repeated, meeting with lord vetenari, talking about angels, etc. You could easily cut out a great deal of the first half and have a better, more concise book.

So far I have been very critical but I jave to say by the end Moist seems to have gotten out of the slump he was stuck in and is pulling off hijinks. I guess it's thematic for the story to start slow because Moist lost some of his edge since the last book? still dont like it. Even the narrator sounds weird in some of the early chapters, hence the ding on performance, but pulls it back by the end.

I'm not sure what else I can say, if you make it through the boring intro the story itself is pretty good. I hope raising steam doesn't repeat these mistakes.

Love the narrator!

While I also enjoy the updated narrations, the original narrators of the DiscWorld series are classics that convey Pratchett’s rich sense of humor.

Terry Pratchett for Economists

Like all Discworld books, this is a terrific read, entertaining and funny and at the same time, great at relating a lot of fundamentally true things. If you're a banking and economics fan, you'll particularly enjoy this one.

The reader is excellent, too.

Strange music, otherwise good

Only thing I didn't like was the weird music they seemed to play randomly. Otherwise it was wonderful.
