Publisher's summary

Plagued by a war between magic and technology, Atlanta has never been so deadly. Good thing Kate Daniels is on the job. She may have quit the Order of Merciful Aid, but she's still knee-deep in paranormal problems. Or she would be if she could get someone to hire her. Starting her own business has been more challenging than she thought it would be - now that the Order is disparaging her good name, and many potential clients are afraid of getting on the bad side of the Beast Lord, who just happens to be Kate's mate.

So when Atlanta's premier Master of the Dead calls to ask for help with a vampire on the loose, Kate leaps at the chance of some paying work. Turns out this is not an isolated incident, and Kate needs to get to the bottom of it - fast, or the city and everyone dear to her might pay the ultimate price.

Great book

Great protagonist. Great love interest. Fun writing style. Fantastic world building.

If you just finished book 4, just buy it already. If you're just picking up the series, read 1 first.

The ability to depict, create a whole world filled with amazing characters is also a gift. I love the adventures that evolve with the people in Kate Daniels world.

Story: good. Narrator: bad

I started this series with the Graphic Audio versions. Unfortunately, they don’t have a version for each book in the series yet. I had to finish the series, but holy cow was it hard.

For some reason, Renee Raudman insists on portraying an old man or an old woman for almost every character. 18-year-old guy? Grandpa. 30-year-old guy? Grandpa. 40-year-old guy? Grandma for some reason. Grandma? Same voice as the 40-year-old guy. I just don’t get it. If you asked someone to impersonate an elderly person, it would sound exactly like Renee Raudman voice acting nearly anyone but the protagonist.

The story is above par, the performance is often

Who was your favorite character and why?

Kate Daniels continues to be a complex and sympathetic character. Despite the massive power she has, and the resources available to her, she does not abuse it. She overcomes, as books should have a main character do, and despite constant doubts, does not wallow in self pity. She may be a bit

What three words best describe Renée Raudman’s performance?

Overacted

Any additional comments?

Many Times I felt Renee put more inflection into the voice than the situation warranted. It added drama to situations that did not have, nor need it. In the end that is just a personal opinion, but that is what a review is for.

Great books!

The entire Kate Daniels series is fantastic. It's got everything you need and more! The magic world setting isn't too far-fetched and the husband/wife team Illona Andews does a fabulous job of explaining everything. One of my favorite series!

No! You're crying.

Okay how much shit can you put this woman through!?
I had to strain not to cry a few times there. I'm just glad everything worked out. Not many books make me feel sad and almost cry. This did a good job of bringing me to the edge. I like the adventure and action with a hint of mystery. I like the romance in these books. Like the Mercy Thompson novels by Briggs, these books have the moosh but it doesn't overpower the actual story.

This series is one of my favorites. I liked the slow build of the relationship between Kate and Curran when it first happened. Now that they are together, I'm glad for it. These two are absolutely adorable. Well, Im not a huge fan of the brawling part but I get that none of their physical fits are done to do any actual damage and they're both very messed up and express themselves in extremes. It's a part of the violent world this story is set in and all but I could go without.

Doesn't disappoint. Renee does a great job conveying the personalities of the different characters.

Ilona Andrews writes a funny, smart dialog.

Just keeps getting better!

Any additional comments?

Anyone who has followed my reviews knows that I am in love with this series. Seriously....it is just the best. I loved this book when I read it over 4 years ago and I loved it during this re-read. I probably liked it even more the second time around because I know how some things are going to work out and it is really interesting to see some of the ground work being laid. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment I spent listening to this book.

This book starts with a lot of excitement. Kate gets a call that there is a loose vampire heading her way. She acts quickly and is able to capture the vampire but then everything falls apart fast. With Andrea's help, Kate works her way through the situation. Andrea accepts Kate's offer to join her business and they get their first client. The case turns out to be a very serious one that could put everyone with magic in danger.

All of the characters that I have grown to love over the course of the series make an appearance in this book. Kate and Curran are now officially a couple and I have to say that I like them both a bit more together. They still speak their mind with each other but there are plenty of more tender moments that melted my heart. I was glad to see Andrea play an important role in this story. Julie has some serious life changing events happen in this installment. Derek was awesome as always and Ascanio proved how awesome he can really be.

I enjoyed the narration. After a rough start with the audio for this series, I have come to really appreciate Rene Raudman's performance of these books. She handles a wide variety of character voices with ease. The emotions that she is able to convey during the story really take the book to a whole new level. The pacing was perfectly done. This was an audiobook that I didn't want to put down and was able to listen to for hours at a time.

I would highly recommend this series to others. This is the fifth book in the series and I really do feel that this is a series that needs to be read in order. I loved this book even though it wasn't quite my favorite in the series it was really close. I can't wait to continue with my re-read!
