Publisher's summary

No matter how much the paranormal politics of Atlanta change, one thing always remains the same: If there' s trouble, Kate Daniels will be in the middle of it. As the mate of the Beast Lord, Curran, former mercenary Kate Daniels has more responsibilities than it seems possible to juggle. Not only is she still struggling to keep her investigative business afloat, she must now deal with the affairs of the pack, including preparing her people for attack from Roland, a cruel ancient being with god-like powers. Since Kate's connection to Roland has come out into the open, no one is safe - especially those closest to Kate. As Roland' s long shadow looms ever nearer, Kate is called to attend the Conclave, a gathering of the leaders from the various supernatural factions in Atlanta. When one of the Masters of the Dead is found murdered there, apparently at the hands of a shapeshifter, Kate is given only 24 hours to hunt down the killer. And this time, if she fails, she' ll find herself embroiled in a war that could destroy everything she holds dea.

Kate is Great

I really enjoy this story line. Every character is this story is a strong character. This book is a continuation of Kate Daniels struggle. She finally meets her father and she determines that her life should be hers and she should live it the way she wants and not how others want her to live. I think there is a moral in there somewhere.

WOW! Loved. it....LOVED!

Would you consider the audio edition of Magic Breaks to be better than the print version?

Renee Raudman and Ilona Andrews is my absolute favorite narrator/author combination. I love to listen to these books over and over (and over.) I love the way Renee reads Kate, she really picks up on her attitude. Also love her performances of all of the other main characters. So much differentiation and great emotional reads.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Kate. Just Kate. Huge fangirl crush. I loved Curran in this book also - always love him but especially in this book. I actually love all the characters, such great character development. My favorite thing is that everyone always acts in character as they have been established in the other books - but they also show growth (which can be lacking in a lot of my other favorite series.)

Any additional comments?

I have never felt more satisfied with a book. I couldn't have predicted where it would go, but it all makes sense and is so enjoyable to experience. I will start listening to it again immediately to pick up on things I may have rushed through the first time. I really felt this was a perfect installment of my favorite series. So happy there is more coming.

Still keeps getting better!

I usually try to keep from spoiling books but this is the 7th in the series and I just want to talk about a few things. I won't spoil much, but if you don't want to know, then stop here and just know I loved this book despite a few things that could have gone a different way.

I understand now why there was a warning in the front of the book that this would feel like an ending but isn't. I COULD see her ending it here. I am very glad she didn't because I really want to see if everyone starts treating Kate differently now that everyone knows who she is.

There were a lot of good things in this books and I obviously loved it. There were also a few things I wish had happened, but didn't. If my guess is to what will happen with her father does happen, I think I will end up liking it better than what you are lead to believe...fingers crossed. Otherwise, why mention so many times that Kate is just not powerful enough to take Roland on? I do feel like the authors could have fixed that when she met her grandmother. For a minute there I really thought she was being filled up with her grandmother's power and that would have explained everything. Maybe things change in later books.

I'm also at the point of not understanding the mentions of her hiding her power at this point. To me, this speaks to her having much more power than what everyone thinks she has. If that is the case, why can't she control all the vampires at once? Or why is Hugh so hard to fight? Why does she get into some situations that she really should have an easy time getting out of? Maybe this will get answered later as well.

Ido hope Kate is hiding more power and we will see it happen. That's because I love to see female heroines be the most powerful. I'm a girl, what can I say. I have more questions but let's see if they all get answered in the next book.

Just loved it!!

I felt this was a great ending even though it wasn’t but many things did come to an end. I love this series, I feel that the author just brings out all the characters and gives life to this world in an amazing way but the narrator oh my god she is just perfect for this series. She is one of my favorite in Audibles. ❤️

This is another book filled with drama, action and love, what else can you ask for?! ☺️

Good

Kate is always in the middle of everything, and this book is no different. Unfortunately, for Kate, the beast lord has to leave to go talk to another pack, and she is in charge of the conclave. This is definitely not something that Kate wants to do on her own especially without her mate but unfortunately, that’s what she hast to do. Then of course, there is a murder, and it looks like one of the Shapeshifters has done it. Kate is given a time limit to find who is the murderer, and possibly turn over that murderer to the people. Kate is not getting along with one of the alphas, and so that alpha plots against her to turn her over to her enemy. Unfortunately, for the head of the people he gets stuck in the same trap with Kate, because he happened to be close when the spell hit. The beast Lord, and some others come to rescue her and it’s very interesting. I don’t know about the physical book version of this book, but in the audible version the author tells the readers that even though this sounds like it is the end of this series this is definitely not going to be the last book. Reading this book definitely does sound like it’s the end of this series, I will definitely be reading the next book.

I love the Kate Daniels Series but this one not so much…

If I had to title this book it would be Kate almost sacrifices all of the people she claims to care about the most to stick it to Hugh. Spoilers ahead.
So in chapter 9 when Kate is running all around the city to avoid getting caught by Hugh and putting her 2 young body guards Derek and Ascanio in mortal danger I was irritated. Ascanio is dying and Derek is in a bad way and Hugh is right around the corner. Instead of surrendering herself to Hugh in exchange for safe passage and healing for her friends she decides she will run back to her former employment, the one she quit due to their prejudices against shapeshifters and ask them to heal the shapeshifters instead of Hugh who at this time has already proven with Doolittle not only that he is a powerful med mage but will also bring people back from the brink of death at her request. But no she chooses to bring the people she cares about to a place where she knows Hugh will just follow her causing more casualties and her friends will be unwelcome and may die due to their injuries. They end up behind bars, Ascanio ends up being tended to by a med mage that has already given up. When Hugh comes and is angry at seeing her behind bars I get it. Kate constantly puts all of her trust in authority figures who blatantly don’t have her best interest at heart, and treat her with constant disrespect. Then she cries as the mercs get slain by Hugh the same Mercs who don’t see her as human and are perfectly ok with her being held in a cell, the ones who won’t let her out and would rather die then stoop to asking her for help. The only person I felt bad about was Marrow. As this is happening and they are all being slain Kate doesn’t for once consider asking Hugh to heal Ascanio, I don’t care what the rat alpha said at that point it would have be more morally right to surrender yourself to Hugh in exchange for the safe passage and healing of your friends. So that was annoying. Then it gets further annoying when she’s trapped for days with Ghastek without food or clean water and all she has to do is surrender herself to Hugh but she is so bent in sticking it to him that she’s willing to let herself and Ghastek starve to death, it’s one thing to act like that on your own account but to do that with someone else’s life in your hands, it’s not cool. She’s fighting against Hugh because she won’t surrender to her father, but she has to know that a reckoning with her father is inevitable so why is she playing with idea of prolonging it and jeopardizing Ghastek’s life? It feels super selfish on her part and had me extremely irritated. If I were Ghastek and I found out that Kate could have ended my suffering a long time ago I would want to strangle her. It’s funny because this is my second time listening to this book and the second time around really listening and thinking on Kate’s actions I find I’m not ok with them. That all being said I find that I’m more interested in Hugh’s story I think he’s an interesting and complex character, actually I find her way more interesting that Curran. Please Illona finish his second book , it’s worth writing.

Pivotal

Reads like the last book, but it is just a pivotal point in the series. I can't wait to see what happens next.
