Audible Editor Reviews

Bernard Setaro Clark delivers a rousing performance of Mad Swine: Dead Winter by American writer Steven Pajak. His clear, direct voice creates an intimate atmosphere for this apocalyptic tale. Three months earlier, a Mad Swine outbreak swept through the community of Randall Oaks. Residents survived the disease and a war with their neighbors, Providence, but now their supplies are dwindling and the infected surround them. Do they stay in place and starve to death, or leave safety in search of possible food and shelter?

Publisher's Summary

Three months after the beginning of the Mad Swine outbreak, the residents of Randall oaks have reached their breaking point. After surviving the initial outbreak and a war waged with their neighboring community, Providence, their supplies are severely depleted. With hostile neighbors at their flanks and hordes of infected outside their walls, they have become prisoners within their own community.

When new allies arrive with an old friend, the brave men and women of Randall Oaks will be faced with the decision to stay within the confines of the community only to die of starvation or to leave the safety of their walls in pursuit of a promise land. The survivors must make their choice - and face a new enemy unseen. Will the remaining members of Randall Oaks continue to survive the apocalypse or will it be a Dead Winter?

    "Awesome Zombie Story!!"
    Any additional comments?

This is one of my top zombie series. I am always listening to 2 or 3 books at any given time. I know a book has moved to the top of my favorites list when I do not want to change to another book every other chapter. The only bad thing about it is that the author did the same thing he did with book one-the cliffhanger. The book ended in the middle of the story.

    "Bad and boring"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The authors 1st book in this series was better. This book spent way way too much time telling me about hair, eye color, how people felt, kissed, etc etc. Tons of detail about holding hands, facial expressions .... this is usually good to a degree but do I really want to know EVERYONE'S EYE COLOR or discuss and ponder ad nauseam about a woman's facial scar and have it described in great detail again and again.

The author was overly descriptive of the scenes and people and very light on the action. A huge war was fought between rival groups between the 1st and 2nd books but this was was glossed over. Instead I got to listen to how sore the protagonist was and how his girlfriends freckles were "cute"....it went on forever

I could make a drinking game about how many times he used the word "flesh". This was frequent and irritating.

The actions and decisions of the protagonists were just too stupid. I could barely finish it and I love these types of books.

Would you ever listen to anything by Steven Pajak again?

    Nope

What does Bernard Setaro Clark bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The narrator was pretty good. I liked him.

    "wow what a stinker !"

only got about 1.5 hours into it and shut it off
couldn't take all the I's and MY's there had to be 1000 of them just in that short time
the author gave it a good try but sorely needs experience writing not even close to people like Child and Preston or Russinovich and I think this is a weird kind of zombie story but never got into it far enough to be sure
personally I won't buy this author again
the narrator was weak at best didn't add anything to the story like a good narrator would do
I am disappointed in it usually put with alot to get into the book but this one well it's a
    STINKER!

Well written, well narrated. Like the characters. But this is a transition book. The survivors decide they need to move on. So they start moving on. Guess I'll be waiting for the next installment.

"Slow start but endure and you'll love it!!"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Definitely! A great story, not just zombies and action, this one focus a lot on the characters and the storyline have great 'sidetracks'.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Mad Swine: Dead Winter?

The first 45 minutes - that really sucks... It feels like the beginning of this book is written by another writer... Hold on through the lousy beginning and the story goes from really simple and predictable to high quality fiction!

Which character – as performed by Bernard Setaro Clark – was your favorite?

He does a great job, all the main characters really come to life!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Past the first 45 minutes - Yes!!

    Any additional comments?

The sequel is great & I really hope there'll be a third book!
