But fate curses him with the very thing he wants. When Butch sacrifices himself to save a civilian vampire from the slayers, he falls prey to the darkest force in the war. Left for dead, he's found by a miracle, and the Brotherhood calls on Marissa to bring him back, though even her love may not be enough to save him.
Keep chilled: listen to more titles in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series.

I am a 40ish woman with more interests than time but some of my favorite things are books, audio books and e-books. I have over 325 audio titles and have already listened to about 2/3rds of them. I drive over 25000 miles a year and my listening keeps me sane on the road.
High. I was surprised by this novel for several reasons. I didn't think I would like it since the main character was one that I was not invested in initially from his portrayal in earlier books in the series. That changed dramatically as the book progressed. This book is different from the others and yet has that intensity that JR Ward is know for.
Actually, while I learned to love Butch, Vishous was my favorite. His friendship with Butch is so intense and powerful that it changed my attitude towards both of them.
When V finds Butch after the Lessers had him is such a powerful scene. V's determination to save him at all costs just floored me. He acts so selfless and he faces the overwhelming odds with such ruthless cunning yet at the same time underneath it all he is so fragile. It really moved me.
What if everything you knew about yourself was based on a lie and it took everything you had to find it... would you? Even at the risk of your own life? Butch is going to find out... and find love along the way.
Read the series in order.
Never trust anyone who doesn't enjoy reading.
Yes! This series is fantastic! I know I will be listening to every book again and again.
**SPOILER ALERT** When Butch turned into a vampire and then joined the Brotherhood. It was wonderful to see him finally find his place in the world.
**SPOILER ALERT** When Butch explained to Marissa what was making him fight the lessors for/with the Brotherhood. It was very moving to learn his story and motivations.
I really enjoy this series. The author is great but the narrator is bad.
I have read other reviews that say the same but this narrator continues to read this series what a shame.
Incredible world developed for our enjoyment. Ward is a wizard; she knows just how to push the buttons of her audience. Awesome story line and character development, you really feel a part of the action. Lovely fantasy opportunities.
Yes, I would if they liked reading Gothic fiction and was familiar with the books in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series.
When Butch is inducted into the BDB and then wed to Marissa.
The timber of his voice....he brings a male voice to the stories.
Marissa frustrated me frequently. She was very stubborn and refused to allow communication to help ease misunderstandings.
I haven't be disappointed yet by this author! These stories bring you into this world and keep you there, it holds your attention and keep you right in the middle of the situations. Thank you to this Author and to Audible books!
Jr Ward just makes you keep coming back and wanting more of his books. I have listened to this series several times so far.
As I listen more to audio books I realize how important the narrator is. Jim Frangione is amazing. He has made the Black Dagger Brotherhood books come alive. The books are great, but it is his narrating that brings them to such a high level. Please - make sure Jim continues narrating these!
always looking for next interesting book.
This book is about character growth. Marissa becomes a woman of substance and the men ........ we should all be so lucky to find someone who loves us enough to want what is best for us. Amazing!
Having once read the whole series I have gone back and purchased the audio's after Lover Avenged and this was the last book I had to complete my audio list of the series.. it's so disappointing after having finished the series thus far... Love the series but when you go back and catch things the author somehow changed or mistakenly messed up something of these great characters it's just frustrating. It was a good read, not my favorite in the series, but a waste if you've read the later books.
