Critic reviews

"[T]he story of a reluctant rebel fighting back in a computer-run world in which people voluntarily submit to death at the age of 21 is a fascinating adventure. Narrator Oliver Wyman's excellent vocal performance guides listeners into this harsh world where children rule. He does a credible job imitating children's and women's voices. When he speaks as Jenny, Logan's running mate, one can clearly see the character in one’s mind. The book differs from the popular film of the same name—and has a far superior ending." ( AudioFile)

A better story

Has Logan's Run turned you off from other books in this genre?

no

What three words best describe Oliver Wyman’s performance?

Uninspired, lethargic, dull

What character would you cut from Logan's Run?

The female lead, her character was so one dimensional, I can't even remember her name.

Any additional comments?

Add a warning for people who may have fond memories of the 70's film and be looking at this as a fun light escape and tell them, WARNING, this is NOTHING like the fun film, this audio book is more like a cure for insomnia.

I really did try to like this book.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I read Dan Brown's new book 'Inferno', and this book was referenced in it. The idea of voluntary suicide at the age of 21 in order to control the world population was very intriguing to me. I was expecting a book with more depth... this book was more like listening to a star trek tv episode. There were a few interesting parts - but overall, it didn't hold my attention.

What was most disappointing about William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson ’s story?

I didn't like the main characters at all. They had no depth - and I had no idea what their motives were throughout the entire book.

Any additional comments?

Needless to say, I won't be reading the rest of the books in the Logan's Run series.

Interesting differences between this and the film.

It's good to go back and finally experience this original novel and see the differences between this and the film that I know so well. As one would expect the adventure and world of the book are far larger than the film had time to go into. Although I wish some of the sequences depicted in the book that were cut in the film script were still in the film as they would have made for great cinema. Still the film is iconic in and of itself. This is a must read for fans of the movie.

Classic Dystopian Sci Fi

When the world believed we would run out of resources by 2020. Fun story and better than the film, with many sixties ideological ideas (never trust anyone old) of overpopulation and famine. I loved the lysergic foam reference.

Short 'n sweet 'n crazy.

In the end, I was quite pleasantly surprised by this book! I didn't come into it with any preconceptions as I've not seen the movie and I only know that the book is "a classic" so I didn't have anything to be disappointed or surprised about. The only thing I really knew was that it was rather short.

This is one of those stories that just throws you in the deep end and doesn't waste time explaining what's going on or why. I didn't expect it to bother with explanations at all and I was quite pleasantly surprised when the author delved into some of the history that shaped the world that Logan lives in. I have a sneaking suspicion that the real reason for this is because Mr Nolan was trying to justify, or at least vaguely explain, the crazy shennanigans near the end of the book but hey, it was nice to get the backstory!

Given the length of the book, the character development (for the major characters at least) was quite good. In the end I really wasn't sure what Logan was actually going to do (in fact, to be honest, I'm still not really sure what happened at the end there).

Gripes? The book almost reads like a screenplay (I wonder if that's more the effect of George Clayton Johnson than William Nolan?). It's action-heavy and moves very fast (I was put in mind of Mathew Reilly's Contest in fact.) This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but the authors seem to get soooo excited about one-upping themselves for the dire straits that they can navigate Logan into that, about three-fifths of the way through, they just give up on explaining how he gets out of them again and we start the next chapter with everyone safely ready to face the next round of crazy.

Overall, a quick, fun, sneakily-thought-provoking story. I might even check out the sequels!

Completely Different from the Movie

Any additional comments?

Wow. I can't believe how different the novel is from the 70s movie. It's incredible and deserves to be remade today to follow the original plot. The greatest aspect of this production is the narration -- Oliver Wyman -- who delivers a spectacular and captivating performance. Looking forward to getting the remainder of the series.

Good book ruined by horrible narration

The book/story itself is a good example of 60's sci-fi, a bit campy by modern standards but well worth reading. Compared to the movie, the book is a much more expansive world that tells a richer story.

The narrator was absolutely horrible, he reads it in a tedious monotone that makes it impossible to enjoy the story. I just gave up after about an hour, and only finished it a month later when I ran out of books on my device but still had this one. It doesn't improve.

I would have been better off getting a text version and having the computer read it to me in its monotone, I think that would still have more expression than Mr. Wyman.

The movie was better than the book

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The book, while good Sci Fi, did not capture the essence of exploring a concept [artificially limited life span] as well as the movie. 30 somehow seems to be much more meaningful than kids just getting out of their teens.

Most significantly was the domed city in the movie with the futuristic setting. This added much more contrast to the society that had developed within the dome especially when viewed against a long lost Washington DC.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

The movie had the better ending and was more uplifting and positive.

Which character – as performed by Oliver Wyman – was your favorite?

Logan is the story and Wyman did a good job portraying him. Some of the other characters were less well defined.

Could you see Logan's Run being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

I am surprized the 'remake' of the movie has not happened yet. The 'Logan's Run' movie from years ago is a classic Sci Fi favorite of mine and it was well cast.

Like the 'Time Machine' and 'War of the Worlds', the remakes always seeem to fall short and 'Logan's Run' if re-made would have to be very good to match the original. I guess I am one of those who puts story and characters above high budget special effects.

Any additional comments?

I plan to eventually listen to the follow-on books for Logan, although I must admit this has moved further down my list of books having listened to Logan's Run. It is still a good story, just not as good as I was expecting.

Not at all like the movie.

What did you like about this audiobook?

I enjoyed the book, not at all like the movie. The Narrator did a decent job. I did listen to this in one sitting while driving and it held my interest throughout the book.

How has the book increased your interest in the subject matter?

I like book to movie comparisons

Does the author present information in a way that is interesting and insightful, and if so, how does he achieve this?

The book was a little less descriptive than I would have thought, seeing the movie helped a bit with the descriptions of places.

What did you find wrong about the narrator's performance?

The narrator did a good job

Different than the movie!

The movie went in a different direction in the second half, which I prefer. But obviously i have my whole life of bias towards the masterpiece film. The narrator was EXCELLENT. i couldn’t believe some of the voices were him!
