Publisher's Summary

Cocktail waitress Sookie Stackhouse is having a streak of bad luck. First her co-worker is killed, and no one seems to care. Then she comes face to-face with a beastly creature that gives her a painful and poisonous lashing. Enter the vampires, who graciously suck the poison from her veins (like they didn't enjoy it).

The point is: they saved her life. So when one of the bloodsuckers asks for a favour, she obliges - and soon Sookie's in Dallas, using her telepathic skills to search for a missing vampire. She's supposed to interview certain humans involved, but she makes one condition: the vampires must promise to behave and let the humans go unharmed. But that's easier said than done, and all it takes is one delicious blonde and one small mistake for things to turn deadly....

The Sookie Stackhouse stories are delightful Southern Gothic supernatural mysteries, starring Sookie, the telepathic cocktail waitress, and a cast of increasingly colourful characters, including vampires, werewolves, and things that really do go bump in the night.

    "Fangtastic!!!"

The novels are always so hilarious. I find myself laughing out loud so many times (the HBO series is darker and more thrilling). Charlaine Harris and the narrator Johanna Parker make a dynamic duo that will keep you listening and wanting more.

Would you try another book from Charlaine Harris and/or Johanna Parker?

No, no more books by Charlaine Harris.

What could Charlaine Harris have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

She could have made Sookie a more independent, strong, feminist woman who has actual friends and a life other than the one surrounding the troubles she has with the abusive men in her life. She is more independent in the TV version, she has a best friend who stands by her. Here she is just a curious plaything. Also, why kill off the obligatory stereotype of a black gay guy? In the TV show his life is more well-roundedly portrayed with a boyfriend and troubles of his own - here he is just a sidekick to be cut for dramatic effect. Ever heard of the Bechdel Test for movies, meaning that you check whether the movie has 1. at least two women in it 2. who have speaking roles 3. talking about something other than a man? And this test does not tell whether the movie is good or feminist, it just tests whether it has any well-rounded portrayals of women in it. Well, this book is told from the point of view of a women but still I don't think it would pass that test! And we're talking about a book here, an 8,5 hour listen, and still there's no real talk (let alone conversations) or between women about something other than a man! I don't think there's ever even any thinking/narration contemplating something other than a man. I know, I know, it's a romance book, about a love story, but still. Give me a real person I can relate to rather than just a puppet.

Which character – as performed by Johanna Parker – was your favorite?

Nothing wrong about Johanna Parker's narration.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Disappointment.

    "Living Dead In Dallas"

This is book 2 in the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris. Sookie has been asked to use her mind-reading skills to help the vampires of Dallas, but she takes on more than she bargained for when she agrees to penetrate a terrorist organisation. The Fellowship Of The Sun has swarn to kill all vampires, and those who associate with them. This book is gripping from the start, its intense pace never letting up until the end. Recommended for all those who loved Dead Until Dark. Impossible to put down!

    Story
"Going downhill fast in vol 2 of a series"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

    No, I found it frustrating

What was most disappointing about Charlaine Harris’s story?

Sookie jumped right into two quite obviously dangerous situations in quite implausible ways, and a new supernatural creature was introduced simply as a way to end the story. I felt really disappointed with this weak plot after the excellent volume 1. Lost interest in following the series completely now

What does Johanna Parker bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Excellent dramatisation rather than a simple reading out

Did Living Dead in Dallas inspire you to do anything?

Find a more interesting book to listen to.

    Any additional comments?

Everything I read I remember, everything I hear I remember...

So as you can imagine I will consume a book and move on never to return, this series of books however are the only ones I have gone back through multiple times. This is because the characters are so intricately designed they become real, the story lines while based in fantasy from the off never fail to surprise and thoroughly delight. I have never had such an all round almost tactile experience from something that I've read to make me come back to them so often and with that first time read anticipation it's nuts because I remember every word already.

They are utterly hilarious, full of blood-pumping action and downright hot in equal measure with so many more facets that will have you also coming back time and again.
The books do not copy the T.V. Show plot line they are completely different the anchors for both being the familiarity of the main characters but both being superb in their own ways.

A definite BUY IT NOW! you certainly will not regret it

    Story
"Not like the TV series, but great all the same!"

There are two types of series; one where you can read the books any which way and get the hang of it, and one where the order is important.

The first Sookie Stackhouse book has a nice solid ending, which made me think that order was not important. This one doesn't. OK so the events are all wrapped up by the end of the book, there are so many of them, so quickly, that many questions are raised and its slightly confusing. I'm left with the feeling that some of them will be answered in the next book.

OR MAYBE I've been confused by the True Blood TV series. This book contains elements which were introduced during various TV series in a different order and at different times. Oh and the characters are also slightly different from the TV series with different motivations. Yes I know, silly me, I should've expected that.

This has made it both an exciting AND confusing listen at the same time. Which is fabulous. Quite frankly I was being lazy choosing a book to listen to I thought I already knew (having seen the TV series) but am doing housework so can't have anything on my headphones that requires me to think too much. I realize now that actually it's much more fun to be going "OH HANG ON! WAIT A MINUTE!" than predicting the future accurately.

The narration is great. The are some very raunchy sex scenes handled nicely and the image of Alexander Skarsgård (who plays Erik on TV) dressed in a skin tight lyrca outfit attending an orgy had a smile on my face for the rest of the afternoon ....

    "Great follow up"

I really enjoyed this audio book. I loved the first book, Dead Until Dark, and had the usual trepidation that the follow up wouldn't be as good. Well, not the case with this one. I loved the Dallas setting and there was as much action and steam as the first. Also, Johanna Parker narrates perfectly. The signature voice she gives each character remains constant thoughout the whole book. All in all, a real winner. I couldn't bring myself to press pause on my Iplayer!!! Worth every penny.
