Publisher's summary

Beginning a New Series by a New York Times Best-Selling Author. Will the People of Earth Bow Down toAlien Overlords—or Will They Live Free or Die?

First Contact Was Friendly

When aliens trundled a gate to other worlds into the solar system, the world reacted with awe, hope and fear. But the first aliens to come through, the Glatun, were peaceful traders and the world breathed a sigh of relief.

Who Controls the Orbitals, Controls the World

When the Horvath came through, they announced their ownership by dropping rocks on three cities and gutting them. Since then, they've held Terra as their own personal fiefdom. With their control of the orbitals, there's no way to win and earth's governments have accepted the status quo.

Live Free or Die

To free the world from the grip of the Horvath is going to take an unlikely hero. A hero unwilling to back down to alien or human governments, unwilling to live in slavery and with enough hubris, if not stature, to think he can win. Fortunately, there's Tyler Vernon. And he has bigger plans than just getting rid of the Horvath.

Troy Rising is a book in three parts—Live Free or Die being the first part—detailing the freeing of earth from alien conquerors, the first steps into space using off-world technologies and the creation of Troy, a thousand trillion ton battlestation designed to secure the solar system.

Captivating

This is such an awesome story! I thought I'd give it a try, since I was not familiar with the author. Half way through listening to book 1, I bought books 2 and 3, and I don't want to go to work - I just want to finish listening!

I'll certainly be checking out John's other books. He has a great way of blending action, characters, and plot. Also, I love the references to BSG and Star Wars - Frakkin cool.

All of the action you would ever want!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This version of the hostile alien contact genre is more enjoyable for me than most others.

The bad aliens are really bad. The allied aliens are as complex as humans. The heroes are heroic. Even those who don't start out as heroic rise to the occasion. I love this series and wish John Ringo would write some more sequels.

What other book might you compare Live Free or Die to and why?

The Posleen war series is comparable in action and drama, but more from the ground-pounder point of view, rather than the space jockey as this series is.

Unlike David Weber, who takes a lot of time to build the political and religious infrastructure to support his action heroes, Ringo just gets on with the mission.

What does Mark Boyett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Mark Boyett's narration is first rate. He really brings the action alive and his characterizations work to keep the people straight in your mind's eye.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This book and the others in the series kept me from sleeping or doing any useful work.

Any additional comments?

Mr. Ringo, please follow up with another episode or twelve.

Great listening!!!

I enjoyed this books so much that I have played it three times in the last three months. I can not wait for the next installment and have searched the internet to find out when it would be avalible.
As for the bad reviews, I will say that it is a sad fact that politics are a way of life and those that wish to stick there head in the sand, well there is nothing anyone can do. and the rest is about trying to imagine what an alien race would do.
If this was to really have happened Washington would use a nuke to get Tyler for the Horvath.

A very fun daydream.

Would you listen to Live Free or Die again? Why?

Perhaps, to get the science parts better and all those very many abbreviations.

What did you like best about this story?

The concept, the idea of the solution on how to "fix" the "problem" at hand.

Which scene was your favorite?

no favorate, I like many of the ideas and concepts.I dont like the gene/medical attack ideas and scenes.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No, not that kind of a book in my opinion.

Any additional comments?

The writer is either from the south or loves the south. He is a die hard right wing republican. If you, the reader are one the left side of politics or PC, "this read might hurt your feelings"...I am how ever on the right, I love it! :) I don't like some of those gene/medical ideas, they are just silly and show the writers preference rather than something an attacking alien force would do.

Finally a writer that doesn't sucker punch

What a breath of fresh air. Mr. Ringo writes a great story in the Heinlein tradition and he is, unlike the likes of greats Stephen King and Greg Bear, upfront and open in his fiction writting concerning his political views. It is so very nice not to get a Stephen King or Greg Bear style sucker punch directed at conservatives in the middle of a good story. Either writers (and movies makers) should avoid making political insults against half the population of the U.S. or be upfront in their storyline as John Ringo is.

WOW! A Must Have!

I encountered John Ringo when I read an early David Weber book written with John Ringo. There were elements in that book (or rather series) that were obviously not from Weber and so I just had to check Ringo out. Except I didn't. I delay getting one of his books until Audible suggested this series. I couldn't stop listening to it. I had to wait a week for my credits to renew and it almost killed me. This first book was a perfect mix of action, suspense, character development, politics, science and plot. It is amazing! It is so worth your time. I highly recommend this book and series. I look forward to sampling more of Mr Ringo's works.

I absolutely love this book

If you could sum up Live Free or Die in three words, what would they be?

Intergalactic maple syrup war!

What about Mark Boyett’s performance did you like?

Mark is really good with his cadence and timing. He does the inflections in such a way that it just makes you think that the people in this are real.

Any additional comments?

I love this book and this whole series. It is just a fun ride through Tyler Vernon's serendipitous experiences. I have listened to this book at least 3 times and imagine I will listen many more.
