Editorial reviews

This novel is a nostalgic classic from the 1960s. The extra-terrestrial environment in which it occurs is, like the Earth itself, a place that is colonized and exploited. Jack Holloway enters planet Zarathustra with his wards the Fuzzies, trying to secure them a home. The Fuzzies are a good metaphor for all the displaced people and animals on Earth. This vintage novel has depth; it raises questions of how sentience can be measured, and what it means to have a place in the world. Narrator Peter Ganim faithfully recites the groovy sci-fic verbiage of the book, but his sincere delivery make the listener bypass the quaint wonkiness and focus on the still-relevant questions found here. A good listen for those interested in early works of sci-fi.

Publisher's summary

The chartered Zarathustra Company had it all their way. Their charter was for a Class III uninhabited planet, which Zarathustra was, and it meant they owned the planet lock stock and barrel. They exploited it, developed it and reaped the huge profits from it without interference from the Colonial Government. Then Jack Holloway, a sunstone prospector, appeared on the scene with his family of Fuzzies and the passionate conviction that they were not cute animals but little people.

Wonderful

I really enjoyed this reading of a science fiction classic. I have this book many times and was very pleased with the characters and voices used by the reader.

Fabulous old fashion SciFi

I loved the story, the plot, the underlined messages, the narration and especially - the fuzzy's!
Some stuff is bizzar - like the Cigar smoking every where, or the Guns - i mean, the humanity has reached other solar systems and set their foot on earth like planets - and yet, using rifles with bullets... but this is nonsense compared to the Fabulous story.

This should be brought to video

I first met Little Fuzzy long before Star Wars turned the imaginary species into warrior Ewoks. This easy-to-understand classic explores what it means to be sentient—and how difficult that thin line might be to pinpoint. Author H. Beam Piper highlights human hubris and obliquely references our interactions with non-human species. Being an older SF tale (1962), it keeps characters simple and leans on a question of hard science. Although some elements haven’t aged well (tobacco and alcohol use, typewriters and paper forms), the greater story is practically timeless, at least until we find out what it’s really like to identify sapience. This is the original story rebooted by John Scalzi in Fuzzy Nation.

Old Classics!

Easily one of my favorite sci-fi stories of ALL TIME, and a pleasure to be able to share it with my children in this format. The narrator doesn't grab you right away, but the longer I listened the more he grew on me. The story itself makes it well worth listening to.

Add the others, audible!!

Great old sci fi

At first I wasn't crazy about the reader, but he not only grew on me, but I think, objectively, he did an excellent job with this reading.
I love H. Beam Piper and it was a pleasure to listen to one of the Fuzzy stories again.

Pleasantly Surprised

I was unsure about the book based on the title, but after reading the reviews and giving it a shot I became very invested in the story. It was well told (the different characters getting their own set of tone) and I wasn’t expecting the end to be so detailed. Overall: Loved it!!

Yes, some things are outdated. The story however, was not.

Great listening! I wish audible brought back more of these classics, they were loved because the stories were good, bring on Fuzzy Sapiens!
