Publisher's summary

Brandon Sanderson is one of the most significant fantasists to enter the field in a good many years. His ambitious, multi-volume epics (Mistborn, The Stormlight Archive) and his stellar continuation of Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series have earned both critical acclaim and a substantial popular following. In Legion, a distinctly contemporary novella filled with suspense, humor, and an endless flow of invention, Sanderson reveals a startling new facet of his singular narrative talent, read by Audie Award-winning narrator Oliver Wyman.

Stephen Leeds, AKA 'Legion,' is a man whose unique mental condition allows him to generate a multitude of personae: hallucinatory entities with a wide variety of personal characteristics and a vast array of highly specialized skills. As the story begins, Leeds and his 'aspects' are drawn into the search for the missing Balubal Razon, inventor of a camera whose astonishing properties could alter our understanding of human history and change the very structure of society. The action ranges from the familiar environs of America to the ancient, divided city of Jerusalem. Along the way, Sanderson touches on a formidable assortment of complex questions: the nature of time, the mysteries of the human mind, the potential uses of technology, and the volatile connection between politics and faith. Resonant, intelligent, and thoroughly absorbing, Legion is a provocative entertainment from a writer of great originality and seemingly limitless gifts.

Fun shorter piece

What did you like best about this story?

Sanderson presents a really novel idea and makes it work in a short amount of time. By the end, I wanted to know and hear more!

Which character – as performed by Oliver Wyman – was your favorite?

The narrator does a great job, keeping all the characters clear and distinct.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

There was a natural break in the story about mid way through which was helpful, but the short story format kept the plot moving along - I could have easily listened to it all in one go.

Good story. Very engaging performance!

Would you listen to Legion again? Why?

Sometimes it's difficult to follow an audio book while driving. My mind wanders and I need to rewind several minutes to catch what I missed. That never happened with this book! It kept me and my two kids engaged throughout the entire story.

What did you like best about this story?

The performance was outstanding, giving each character their own personality. I need to see what other books have been narrated by Oliver Wyman.

The main character's engagement with his various "aspects" was intriguing and I'm curious what will happen to him in the sequels. I'm also interested enough to want to know more about his background, which I hope later books will reveal.

Have you listened to any of Oliver Wyman’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is my first Oliver Wyman narration, but probably not my last.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No extreme reaction to the book.

Any additional comments?

I appreciated Brandon Sanderson's attempt to wrestle with the debate between science and religion in his story line. It's not an easy task to deal with issues that can very easily limit your audience, but I think he did a commendable job. I'd probably want to enter into some discussion about how it might have been improved here and there, but no major complaints.I was also glad that I was able to listen to the story with my pre-teen kids. There are a few uses of "d-mn" and "b-st-rd" from one of the main character's "aspects," but they're usually admonished by one of the other "aspects." There's also a kissing scene, but certainly nothing I'd consider adult fare.

A Must Read

Any additional comments?

I was skeptical at first by the idea of the book but once I started reading, the execution of the idea was absolutely brilliant. I really hope the author expands on this universe a bit but I think keeping them a short like book would be a good idea.

Interesting and different!

What did you love best about Legion?

The way the various aspects worked seamlessly through the story.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Legion?

I really enjoyed when Legion created a new aspect to handle a previously unhandleable situation.

Which scene was your favorite?

The airplane scene is my favorite, where he has to talk to the translator.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

He's everything a woman would want: tall, dark, and handsome...but he comes with baggage - an entire 747's worth.

No, but I would listen to him again.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Fresh new idea

Would you consider the audio edition of Legion to be better than the print version?

I have not read the print version

Who was your favorite character and why?

The butler, he was always calm cool and collected. He seemed to be the main character's sidekick.

Have you listened to any of Oliver Wyman’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes

Any additional comments?

This book was a fresh new take on a detective theme. I loved the idea of the unassuming genius that was so bright he was forced to split his prodigious mind into multiple parts by way of a completely sane owner of multiple personalities. Additionally, I like how Sanderson played these out as additional characters in the story. Even the story line was new and refreshing. I got this one for free and probably wouldn't have paid for it since it was so short, but after reading it; it would have totally been worth a credit. I hope this novella project of his expands into a full series of novels (after he finishes the next stormlight book). Come on, Sanderson, write faster, I can't get enough.
