Publisher's summary

Komarr could be a garden with 1,000 more years' work, or an uninhabitable wasteland if the terraforming fails. Now, the solar mirror vital to the terraforming of the conquered planet has been shattered by a ship hurtling off course. The emperor of Barrayar sends his newest imperial auditor, Lord Miles Vorkosigan, to find out why.

The choice is not a popular one on Komarr, where a betrayal a generation before drenched the name of Vorkosigan in blood. Thus, the Komarrans surrounding Miles could be loyal subjects, potential hostages, innocent victims, or rebels ready for revenge.

Lies within lies, treachery within treachery - Miles is caught in a race against time to stop a plot that could exile him from Barrayar forever. His burning hope lies in an unexpected ally, one with wounds as deep and honor as beleaguered as his own.

Critic reviews

"Bujold retains the wit, intelligence, action, and great character development that have made the Miles Vorkosigan series so superior. In Komarr she proves once again that it is possible for the latest book in a series to be as good as the first." ( Voya)
"As usual, Bujold tells a fast-moving story that combines just the right amount of action and wit as Miles continues to mature in a manner unusually complex for a series protagonist....[Bujold's] work remains among the most enjoyable and rewarding in contemporary SF." ( Publishers Weekly)

Space Opera and the hiperactive hero grows up

Who was your favorite character and why?

Ekaterina, she was trapped in a terrible relationship, which seemed alright because it wasn't violent, until she realizes that she doesn't have to stay, even though leaving is scary. I wish I had recognized this when I was in a similar relationship, rather than seeing it in hindsight.

Miles in Love??? Oh My. what a tangle as usual.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

With his usual "grace" Miles falls in love. This is the funny, heart warming, and just plain action packied good fun that we have come to expect from Bujold. This audio book is well presented and well paced. The Narrator even captures the wry wit of Miles.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Komarr?

The ending was perfect with just the right touch of humor.

Which scene was your favorite?

The scene where Miles and Ekaterin go shopping was especially well done. The Madam shall we wade line delivered with just the right touch.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

I can see this as a romantic sci fi movie. It is enough of a stand alone story that it could be adapted but the Tag line would have to be Love blooms under glass or something like that.

Any additional comments?

Get this book you wll enjoy it. It is one of ther author's best and is an excellent place to start in the series if you have not encountered Miles before now.

Another Vorkosigan novel that I couldn't put down.

I LOVE these stories. LMB does it again. She stretches her story telling abilities AGAIN! This time telling the inter-twining story through two characters point of view. It turns out great! Believable and deep character interactions. Characters you believe in and care about. Thank you LMB!

Slow, but I enjoyed it

This was the slowest-paced Vorkosigan novel so far, but I still enjoyed it. I don't know if I would have enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed listening to it. It has the great characterization I've come to expect of the author and an interesting mystery.

Miles the Auditor finds a Courageous Vor Woman

Miles joins a fellow Auditor to investigate the damage to Komarr's Solar Array. In staying with their family, Miles finds himself drawn to the heart and soul of Ekaterina, the married niece, who is trapped in a painfully loveless marriage with 'Tien. As the mystery of the Array's damage unfolds in curious and amazing ways, Miles is sure he is in love with the courageous Vor woman that is the heart of Ekaterina.
Mystery, humor, longing, and terrorists set within the everyday of dome living and terraforming on this planet make for a compelling story.
Grover Gardner does an amazing job of communicating the emotions and story. He is the voice of the Vorkosigans.

Holds up

I like listening to this book. Have done it several times now, and enjoy it every time. It’s clever & the characters grow. The details arc cleverly throughout, so paying attention to details pays off.

As a Miles Vorkosigan installment I like it particularly because for all he likes to be the hero, he doesn’t tuen the focus to himself. He lets other people lead, he lets people act without always butting in, though he also butts in in his inimitable benevolent dictator style, sometimes overstepping, but never trying to be mean. Even though the situations get tense, I like reading about characters who care how they affect those around them. Miles doesn’t always get it right, but in this book he thinks a lot more before acting.

My only caveat is that in real life if you need to leave a spouse who acts erratically when you exert yourself or disagree with them, do not ever break up in person, and certainly not in private. Do not let them know you are leaving, just go. Oaths or vows are all well and good, but safety comes before any idea of fairness. Leave cleanly & get away.

Unlucky in love

Another good read by LMB. I've been happy with every one of her Vorkosigan novels so far (well, except for the first one, the Vor Game, which was probably the weakest). Her characters are believable, and have depth of character. This chapter of the Vorkosigan saga finally takes Miles closer to his personal fulfillment, and I wish him the best of luck in his future adventures (I have only two more left to read!).
