Publisher's Summary

Komarr could be a garden with 1,000 more years' work, or an uninhabitable wasteland if the terraforming fails. Now, the solar mirror vital to the terraforming of the conquered planet has been shattered by a ship hurtling off course. The emperor of Barrayar sends his newest imperial auditor, Lord Miles Vorkosigan, to find out why.

The choice is not a popular one on Komarr, where a betrayal a generation before drenched the name of Vorkosigan in blood. Thus, the Komarrans surrounding Miles could be loyal subjects, potential hostages, innocent victims, or rebels ready for revenge.

Lies within lies, treachery within treachery - Miles is caught in a race against time to stop a plot that could exile him from Barrayar forever. His burning hope lies in an unexpected ally, one with wounds as deep and honor as beleaguered as his own.

Hi-fi sci-fi: listen to more in the Vorkosigan saga.

What the Critics Say

"Bujold retains the wit, intelligence, action, and great character development that have made the Miles Vorkosigan series so superior. In Komarr she proves once again that it is possible for the latest book in a series to be as good as the first." (Voya)
"As usual, Bujold tells a fast-moving story that combines just the right amount of action and wit as Miles continues to mature in a manner unusually complex for a series protagonist....[Bujold's] work remains among the most enjoyable and rewarding in contemporary SF." (Publishers Weekly)

    "A Woman for Miles"

just love a book that gives me heroines of honor, courage, and intelligence. Probably why I'm obsessed with this series. Miles is fabulous as usual, but the fact that the Vorkosigan World is peopled with deliciously complex and admirable women keeps me happily spending my book budget at Audible again and again.

I don't mind the long commute anymore. Sometimes I even drive around town just to get to place I can stop.

The series just keeps getting better. I savor every minute. I almost long for ugly commutes.

    "reliably enjoyable"

If you have gotten this far with the Vorkosigan Saga then you will know exactly what you are getting with this book. It's not one if the great ones, only very good, hence the 4 stars. That's good enough though.

    "I Love Miles' Books!"
What made the experience of listening to Komarr the most enjoyable?

I've read every book in the series, and I got my mother (who's 80) to read them, too. Fun, sweet, very well written. Komarr just pushes Miles' story along even more. READ THEM ALL!

What about Grover Gardner’s performance did you like?

    He's always great.

    Any additional comments?

If you haven't read Bujold's Vorkosigan series, and you love science fiction, then get them all!

What did you like best about Komarr? What did you like least?

I liked that the Miles character was made to develop his approach to life, although I miss the cavalier characteristics, it seemed a natural morph of character and the change kept the story from being overly predictable.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

    it was okay

Have you listened to any of Grover Gardner’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    yes.....the reader is really good

Could you see Komarr being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

    no

    Any additional comments?

    no

Who was your favorite character and why?

Ekaterina, she was trapped in a terrible relationship, which seemed alright because it wasn't violent, until she realizes that she doesn't have to stay, even though leaving is scary. I wish I had recognized this when I was in a similar relationship, rather than seeing it in hindsight.

    "Komarr"

I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to someone new to the Vorkosigan-verse.

My one qualm was that the character-interaction/character-development and the plot were almost entirely separated from one another for Ekaterin. While occasionally the plot did influence her in a dramatic fashion, I didn't like how Ekaterin didn't have much to do with the conspiracy until the very end. The book would have been slightly better if she had a vested interest in stopping the conspiracy from the beginning, but instead the hand of the author forced her to care.

That said, I still liked it. Bujold does fairly hard sci-fi (ignore the wormholes). The terra-forming details were excellent. This is as good a place to start as any if you are new to the series.

    "My old friend Miles"

It’s been some time since I finished Memory, but the moment I heard that gravely Grover Gardner introduction I was back in Lois McMaster Bujold’s fantastic universe. Komarr is a fantastic tale one part intrigue two parts romance, though romance is not my usual forte I enjoyed it thoroughly simply because Miles is a character to which one grows attached.

Both parts of this story are enjoyable. A plot which could change the political and military landscape across the universe, together with a new relationship for Miles that could burgeon into something more if he can avoid putting his foot in it.

As always Grover Gardner’s performance is flawless, his character portrayal perfectly consistent with clear distinction between all.

    "Fantastic"

Beautiful writing, clever dialog, great story and well-developed characters--everything you can expect from a Bujold book. Add Gardner's excellent narration, and you have an unbeatable combination. I enjoyed this book even though I haven't read any of the Vokosigan books except Shards of Honor, which was also incredibly good. I will be going back now getting the entire series.
