Publisher's summary

Komarr could be a garden with 1,000 more years' work, or an uninhabitable wasteland if the terraforming fails. Now, the solar mirror vital to the terraforming of the conquered planet has been shattered by a ship hurtling off course. The emperor of Barrayar sends his newest imperial auditor, Lord Miles Vorkosigan, to find out why.

The choice is not a popular one on Komarr, where a betrayal a generation before drenched the name of Vorkosigan in blood. Thus, the Komarrans surrounding Miles could be loyal subjects, potential hostages, innocent victims, or rebels ready for revenge.

Lies within lies, treachery within treachery - Miles is caught in a race against time to stop a plot that could exile him from Barrayar forever. His burning hope lies in an unexpected ally, one with wounds as deep and honor as beleaguered as his own.

Critic reviews

"Bujold retains the wit, intelligence, action, and great character development that have made the Miles Vorkosigan series so superior. In Komarr she proves once again that it is possible for the latest book in a series to be as good as the first." ( Voya)
"As usual, Bujold tells a fast-moving story that combines just the right amount of action and wit as Miles continues to mature in a manner unusually complex for a series protagonist....[Bujold's] work remains among the most enjoyable and rewarding in contemporary SF." ( Publishers Weekly)

Expansive

Bujold continues to grow her characters with each novel she expands them and the story. Komarr brings the lead character full circle he started out tricking his way into an navy and then stumbled out again but redeemed himself.

Even weak Bujold is Great...

Bujold is one of my favorite modern Sci Fi authors. Her characterization is very strong, with wit, intelligence, good stories, and even some romance ??? I think. Komarr is no exception. Komarr has less action than almost any of the other Vorkosigan novels, yet it had enough for me. It is truly remarkable that Bujold has written so many good books. Komarr has a nice little mystery and some action, but it is mostly character development and relationship building. This was not my favorite Bujold novel, but it was nevertheless superior to almost any other Sci Fi out there.

Beautifully read, wonderfully written.

I would not start this series with this book- being well into the thick of a story. Each book can be read on it's own, but I prefer to start with the beginning. That being said, the Vorkosigan Saga is one of my all time favorite Sci-fi stories. Grover Gardner is a fantastic reader and is simply a joy to listen to.

My favorite Miles V Story

I'm an avid fan. I think I like this novel (and the next A Civil Campaign) are the best for long term fans. Perhaps it's because Miles finally finds his Ekaterine. Excellent

One of the Best

We find our newly appointed little Lord Auditor on conquered planet Komarr, investigating a suspicious space freighter accident that turns out to be a lot more than it seems. He meets a dutiful Vor wife to an administrator who begins to figure in his inquiries. She turns out to be a lot more than she seems. In the wealth of domestic details that follow, lovers of this series will find a turning point in the life of Miles Vorkosigan. You should immediately follow this with “A Civil Campaign”, which is clever romantic fluff but completes a story arc. I didn’t appreciate it nearly so much the first time I read it, but ten or so re-hearing/ readings in, and all the books that followed, I see it for the tightly plotted, crucial explanation of Vor it really is.

Superb entry in the fabulous Vorkosigan saga

Superb story and characters in this, one of the best in Miles's life. I love Ekaterin, almost as much as Miles. The setting is fascinating--I have always loved my time on Komarr. I do not know how many times I have read this book, but was very surprised it was not already reviewed here. I am sure it has not been "that long ago"...at any rate I recommend Bujold's Vorkosigan series to just about anyone! Fabulous character-driven, well-plotted tales in an amazing world. Excellent writing. It takes you away completely, and Grover Gardner does a fabulous narration.

More of a set up book for the rest of the series

This one (in the series) has the feel of a set up for the rest of the books that come after it. On its own it is a good book, but if it is taken as a piece of the large picture of the series then it really keeps your interest. It still has some good action, mystery, and suspense. The characters introduced and developed end up playing key roles in the plots to come in future books. For these reasons, I have to take a starr off my review even though I loved the book. I love the series! If you like the 'Prince Roger' series by David Weber and John Ringo then you will love these too!

Great performance of a great series.

My wife and I joke, "Wait a minute, I'm at the good part." Because every part is the good part.

A Woman for Miles

just love a book that gives me heroines of honor, courage, and intelligence. Probably why I'm obsessed with this series. Miles is fabulous as usual, but the fact that the Vorkosigan World is peopled with deliciously complex and admirable women keeps me happily spending my book budget at Audible again and again.
