Publisher's summary

Kitty has been tapped as the keynote speaker for the First International Conference on Paranatural Studies, taking place in London. The conference brings together scientists, activists, protestors, and supernatural beings from all over the world - and Kitty, Ben, and Cormac are right in the middle of it.Master vampires from dozens of cities have also gathered in London for a conference of their own. With the help of the Master of London, Kitty gets more of a glimpse into the Long Game - a power struggle among vampires that has been going on for centuries - than she ever has before.

In her search for answers, Kitty has the help of some old allies and meets some new ones, such as Caleb, the alpha werewolf of the British Isles. The conference has also attracted some old enemies, who've set their sights on Kitty and her friends.

All the world's a stage, and Kitty's just stepped into the spotlight.

Mostly set up

I have historically loved the Kitty Norville series, but this one left me a little wanting. First off let me say that Marguerite Gavin is spectacular as usual, and the production of this audio book is of very high quality. The writing itself is crisp, funny, and well done...the story on the other hand is basically a set-up for (hopefully) the next novel. The plot in this book just seemed very low-key, no really overall dramatic plotline, when something does happen it is quickly resolved..then something else might happen but these subsequent events did not really seem connected to the prior event. Rather there seems to be several hidden sub plots/action streams happening that we don't really get to see yet. I equate this book with a "book 1" of a trilogy, where some minor things happen but the real plot is to be revealed and resolved in subsequent novels.
That being said, I think that Ms. Vaugh is leading up to a humdinger of a showdown and anybody who misses this book will be lost in later books. So it is a must-read for Kitty Norville fans, but it will probably leave you a little disappointed that nothing really happens.

Merely a battle won, but not the war

“So the war begins. At last.”
Well, not quite. It’s more like only the opening gambit.
The series arc involving the Long Game moves forward- an inch. But the Big Bad remains absent and the closest we get is a thirty second confrontation with a few of his allies. We also get to spend time with some of the characters from prior books, like former were-soldier Tyler, newly minted vampire Emma, and werejaguar Luiz.

This installment is a lot of blah blah paranormal politics and protests until more than halfway through, when we get one thrilling action scene, followed by a bit of kidnapping suspense. It was still a solid listen, however I preferred the books with more of a self contained mystery procedural format. It’s also nagging me more and more that there isn’t a human contingent looking to form alliances with Kitty’s side in the coming war.

Kitty is so cool!

Where does Kitty Steals the Show rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Its great...and I have listened to a LOT of books!!!! MG's narration is always perfect in my book!!!!

What other book might you compare Kitty Steals the Show to and why?

The Kitty series is similar to the Night huntress series...but great as is....it can stand alone...Kitty is so cool!

Which scene was your favorite?

I liked her interviews....and when they saved Tyler....but I really loved the whole book!!!

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Same as the Title...this would make a good movie....all her books would!!!

Any additional comments?

I hope there are more Kitty books, I loved this one...and she still has more to say I think...she has grown so much, and is truly an inspiration....I love Ben, and I love Cormac...I think this is one of my ATF series so far....and has left me wanting more!!!

Kitty Steals The Show

I really loved this installment of the series. In this book Kitty gets some new allies via some old ones. Kitty blows the doors off the "long game". I won't give anything away here. Lots of laughs and her usual snark. You get to see a softer side of Cormac also.

Excellent installment for the series.

This book had a great balance of action and contemplation, just as all the best books in this series have.

Kitty the Queen of Werewolves

Would you listen to Kitty Steals the Show again? Why?

Not for a while. It was a good listen .. but I like to space out re-listens

What was one of the most memorable moments of Kitty Steals the Show?

She meets someone who actually KNEW William Shakespeare .. ties in with her English Lit degree

Which character – as performed by Marguerite Gavin – was your favorite?

Kitty. The book revolves around her

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Extreme reaction? Ummm .. not really.

Any additional comments?

I thoroughly enjoyed the book - which tends to make me suspect reading reviews of books. I think people get into a mindset about how a series or character is supposed to go .. and when a book in a series slides into a slightly different path they become uncomfortable.

Another great adventure for Kitty Norville

Characters drive the plot as Kitty heads to London and meets up with a new vampire Family, the local English pack, and goes to head to head with some old enemies.

While in London for the first ever scientific conference on the supernatural, Kitty learns how the rest of the world’s vampires treat her fellow werewolves, and how pervasive Roman’s influence is on the world’s vampires. She gets tangled up in one plot to take out the Master of London and in another, spearheaded by an old enemy (or two), to capture werewolf soldiers for use in building a supernatural army.

As with all the Kitty books, we get to meet some great new characters, like Ned Allen–vampire, Elizabethan stage actor, and Master of London. I love how Kitty gets all giddy at the idea that Ned knew Shakespeare. We also meet Caleb, the Alpha werewolf of the British Isles. Kitty attempts to move Ned and Caleb’s relationship from “ignoring each other” to “working together,” based on the relationship she has with Rick back home in Denver.

We also get to meet some awful characters. The delegate of world vampires are awful; in particular, they way the view and treat werewolves is horrific. Kitty stirs up trouble by refusing to cow to their self-importance and accusing some of them of working with Roman. She also talks with their wolves, attempt to incite riot and defection, telling the wolves they don’t deserve to be cannon fodder for the coming war. As usual, she has some success, and earns the title Regina Luporum from some of the vampires — Queen of Wolves, a wolf who will stand up for her brethren against the vampires.

Carrie Vaughn has been great about letting us revisit characters from previous books. In Steals the Show, we get to spend time with Allette in D.C. and her descendant Emma in London, Dr. Schumacher and Joseph Tyler at the conference, and Luiz, the were-panther with whom Kitty had a fling while in Washington D.C. for the Senate hearings in Book 2. Assuming she’s still single, Luiz greets Kitty VERY warmly. Once he learns Kitty is married, the scenes where Luiz toys with Ben, much like a cat would, are priceless.

One of the smaller story lines I really enjoyed in this book was Cormac meeting Amelia’s family. It’s interesting to see Kitty observing the changes in Cormac since he “partnered” up with Amelia. It makes me look forward to Low Midnight that much more.
