Publisher's summary

The follow-up to Mark Lawrence' s thrilling debut novel Prince of Thorns, King of Thorns continues the tale of antihero Jorg Ancrath. After wresting back control of his kingdom from those who murdered his family, Jorg sees the land erupt with hundreds of battles fought by lords and petty kings. More daunting still, he faces an enemy many times his own strength. Jorg may not be able to win this battle in a fair fight, but he wields a rage and cunning that just might even the odds.

Well rounded

What made the experience of listening to King of Thorns the most enjoyable?

The narrator gave a good performance and the story itself is just plain entertaining.

What other book might you compare King of Thorns to and why?

I might say it's similar to Joe Abercrombie's works only a little less dark.

Ugliness at its most beautiful

The broken empire trilogy would have to be my favourite series of fantasy. The depth of meaning and feeling conveyed by Mr Lawrence's writing is a thing of rare beauty. I found the Red Queen's War to be less consuming, but these books are an absolute triumph.

Jorg is not a nice person but I couldn't dislike him. This is in and of itself a credit to the author. The other characters aren't so fleshed out, but even ones who aren't around for long live and breathe on the pages. Reading or, at least this time, listening to the series for a second time has been almost better with the sense of keen anticipation and picking up subtle foreshadowing I missed first time around.

The only thing I didn't really like 100% is the narration. But that could be because I had already read the book and heard a different voice for Jorg. James' voice was a touch too swaggering in his delivery for me.

I love the insight and intelligence in the writing and feel grateful to have picked up Prince of Thorns. Don't be put off by the oft terrible subject matter and let yourself get carried away on the story. Slip under Jorg's skin for a while. Most will be glad they did.

Thorns Rocks!

Mark Lawrence is a genius. I connected with Jorg so thoroughly, it was scary. To bridge two strong stories with these three words: four years earlier, is nothing short of brilliant!

Great job, James Clamp! You are talented abound!

Great book, great performance

The story seemed disjointed and confusing at first but it all came together at the end. The narrator was great too.

great dark fantasy

i highly recommend if you like dark fantasy, love the story and the character development is great. Its not quite as dark as Joe Abercrombie but certainly dark enough for my taste.

It's a game with no rules

I love these characters. I love to hate these characters. Mark Lawrence has created a fascinating dystopin world, full of evil little manipulations. King Jorg calls it a game without rules in which his quest is to be Emperor. James Clamp does an excellent job of bringing all the personalities to life

Loved it!

Better than the 1st...onto the next one. Jorg is a tough character to love, but I do. I feel dirty admitting it.

Yeah its pretty good

Story is a cool concept and the narrator is good. Jumps around a little bit which makes it a little hard to follow so you’ll be rewinding.
